The advertisers were looking to capitalize on a male market base which was feeling a new and intense pressure from the women's liberation movement. Historically you wouldn't have needed an add like that because it was a given that men were dominant over women in the social sphere. After women started entering the work force and assuming more masculine roles however, it wasn't... thus you could appeal to men by advertising some product that would assert their dominance again. Wear Mr. Leggs pants and assume your proper social standing again. You get the idea.

      * Women in many high-paying important jobs. Check.
      * Women having a viable chance at election to high office. Check.

      * All sorts of stuff that could be improved... plenty of that to be had, but it is, overall, trending upward.

      Maybe it's not everything the feminist movement wants/wanted. But to argue that things now aren't better off than what was depicted in the ad just makes you sound like a whiner.
