- evil-doer, on 02/03/2008, -1/+26this is actually a scale model of the first internet. then called "a series of tubes"
- barryiggins, on 02/03/2008, -1/+20Here is more noisy sculpture, created by artist Tim Hawkinson:
Drip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1BOyPiljb4
Deposition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mPW3weR27k
Überorgan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvtplFR9CxM
Überorgan, created from multiple bus-size biomorphic balloons, each with its horns tuned to a different note in an octave, is a gargantuan self-playing organ. Its musical score consists of a 200-foot-long scroll of dots and dashes encoding old hymns, pop classics, and improvisational ditties. Tim Hawkinson explains: "The score is deciphered by the organ's brain- a bank of light-sensitive switches- and then reinterpreted by a series of switches and relays that translate the original patterns into nonrepeating variations of the score.".
Also, more info from PBS show "Art:21": http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/hawkinson/index.h ... (you should check out the video clips and interviews, too)
If you get the chance, his stuff is even cooler if you experience it in person. Even if you aren't really interested in art. - Larz0rz, on 02/03/2008, -0/+19Wow, what an ***** artist. "I got these pipes. These pipes, yes. They make annoying sounds when i blow in them. OK, I need about 150 of these pipes. Alright, stick them together. I need a windy location.. - inactive, on 02/03/2008, -1/+5that would be freakin annoying next to your house.
- anoopkumar, on 02/03/2008, -0/+4In India (Southern state of Karnataka) there are many man made temples where the pillars are not only made to support the roof, but play specific musical notes (not random, but classical Sa Re Ga Ma notes) as the wind blows.
Vithala Temple (in Hampi, Karnataka) is built with 56 musical pillars that resound with musical chimes in response to the wind or even if you tap each pillar with your hand. Certainly something one would want to visit if travelling to India. The science and understanding of acoustics of an almost ancient generation is mind boggling.

"You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it, Honey!" - nailPuppy, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3That is neat. Sounds like an old air raid siren.
- inactive, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3This reminds me of something H.R. Geiger was trying to do with the Alien design for the movies. In one of his beautiful Necronomicon art books, he explains that his original design was to have pipes on the backs of the aliens that were harmonically tuned. That way as long as they're in a gaseous atmosphere, they can locate each other by sound.
- JackStowe, on 02/03/2008, -0/+3I agree. A genius work.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+3kind of like The Sound Garden in Seattle.......
