- MrTeQ, on 07/05/2009, -3/+115Apparently this underground artist does art shows now. He didn't invade the museum.
An explanation would have been nice.
The video is better..http://banksy.co.uk/index2.html - mmurdock77, on 07/05/2009, -6/+91Never ceases to amaze me.
- LokitheComplex, on 07/05/2009, -18/+75While I liked his subversion its getting a bit worn for me. I find it all a bit smug, rightous and self important.
The politics seem like the most obvious shallow hippy holding hands variety.
Its sold in galleries so proper business and hardly street.
And the juxtapositions are familiar to anyone who's seen a online photoshop competition. - DouglasQ, on 07/05/2009, -5/+54The only graffitti I've ever been motivated enough to actually do is a church sign I drive past a lot which permanantly has the very obnoxious words "The Lord Gives Wisdom!". I made a sign to stick under it which said "-and The Lord Taketh Away."
- huniper, on 07/05/2009, -6/+51I think I know what you mean...
YO DAWG I HERD YOU LIKE BANKSY SO WE PUT A BANKSY IN YO BANKSY SO YOU CAN BANKSY WHILE U BANKSY - Dillinger71, on 07/05/2009, -9/+51Yes.

Right? - digitul, on 07/05/2009, -7/+40the only worse than pseudo intellectual artists are pseudo intellectual wannabe art critics. OOH lets bash something popular that lots of people like so i can be "edgy" and against the grain. it's been done.
- beatnut2k4, on 07/05/2009, -2/+29Here's a whole bunch more: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1147270@N23/pool/

- thegenome, on 07/05/2009, -2/+25went last week... was totally awesome and entertaining. I think a videos needed really.... http://banksy.co.uk/index2.html
- skyjis6, on 07/05/2009, -0/+22let them eat cake -> let them eat crack. unwillingness of some of the rich to help with the problems of poor.
that was my interpretation. - tenaya, on 07/05/2009, -10/+30i dont get it
- snappycat, on 07/05/2009, -0/+19Cheers for the link guys - nearly fell off my chair when I logged into my flickr account and saw all the comments and favs! Some good vids on youtube of the animatronics stuff if anyone is interested... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIb8zxIDHiE
- dazparkour, on 07/05/2009, -5/+21People are always negative to the art of the day, holding high the art of the past -
Maybe in the future, they will include all those things you saw in those online competitions up as examples of art too. - thePTS, on 07/05/2009, -0/+16Come on. Let him have them for himself.
- iveL, on 07/05/2009, -0/+15frankly, bruce, i'm glad you said something. i hate anyone that can't even metaphors right! you accidentally this whole thread!
- psyc420, on 07/05/2009, -5/+19banksy is awesome...but i wonder, who's going to be the one who makes banksy art on banksy, you know what i mean/?
- chris8535, on 07/05/2009, -2/+14I agree. I've found him clever for sure and very entertaining on an individual piece basis. But the work viewed together is repetitive and the wit becomes grating.
- e36wheelman, on 07/05/2009, -1/+13The "I hate mondays" one is the best.
That's the kind of subversive work that makes Banksy stand out. - Killyp, on 07/05/2009, -2/+13What I also like about Banksy is that I actually see his work in real life. I don't have to go to some museum where they're having to preserve his work - Banksy's work preserves itself.
- nevetssav, on 07/05/2009, -1/+11Art as social commentary? Oh my god! Someone stop it! [/s]
- GuacamoleSan, on 07/05/2009, -5/+14This man in my eyes is the new michelangelo. His street work was to make a statement to the masses, but his actual artwork.......hes a very talented man.
- BananaChips, on 07/05/2009, -0/+9the was just terrible
- nevetssav, on 07/05/2009, -3/+12"damage"?
- MWeather, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10"No *****, but why crack? In the original saying it was because the rich ate cake"
No, Marie Antoinette said that in response to being told the poor have no bread to eat. It shows the callous and ignorant nature of the ruling class. Let them eat crack reflects the modern ruling class's response to the plight of the people. - NickLee808, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10Simple minds are the ones that call it just "random ***** on iconic images" and "nifty looking graffiti."
Simple minds also make use of poor grammar. - Dorment, on 07/05/2009, -0/+9Im a fan of Banksy, I think his originality and creativity are obvious. But having said that I feel he is becoming dangerously close to fulfilling the old "self-parody" problem some artists fall into. His art though poignant and topical is becoming somewhat generic and repetitive. I see his new pieces and I think "Wow thats clever, but I've seen it before." I'd be excited to see him totally go off in another direction some how. Just saying.
Also p.s. you guys should check out Maurizio Cattelan's work if your a fan of this kind of stuff. Also the street artist Blek le Rat is very good, sort of the originator of subversive complex street art and a big influence on Banksy. - WMurderface, on 07/05/2009, -1/+10Probably not, but you are probably in the minority.
- detcade, on 07/05/2009, -0/+8the only thing worse than all of those things are people who say "BURN!" after their own statements
- hairyblue, on 07/05/2009, -0/+8ahh, but the exhibition is called 'Banksy vs Bristol Museum'
video is good too thanks for that. - thePTS, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7so jealous. sooo jealous!
yes, there are many brilliant artists, but the main difference is that banksy has actually ninjaed around the streets of the world, spraypainted, ran away from the police, he's made common people in the street smile as they pass his works on their way through the city.
It's not that it is so ***** profound, all of it, but he has many very good observations. The pieces always look very nice on the walls. It's the combination of the way it has been made, where it has been placed, how it looks, as well as the actual idea.
But you fail to see/understand this, probably because you have read too much about classic art, which tbh most people are pretty much fed up with, and got the final nail in the coffin with the internet age. - Typographreak, on 07/05/2009, -2/+910 awesome points if you're from Bristol.
- Liquid69, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6How many points if you not from Bristol. I could use some awesome points. I used my last few on beer.
- inactive, on 07/06/2009, -0/+6"every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier" Banksy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blek_le_Rat - artofwar420, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6You mean masturbate?
- rjc5056, on 07/05/2009, -4/+10Some day, I hope to have an original banksy piece, in or on my home. A man can dream...
- Attunement, on 08/02/2009, -0/+5I saw this yesterday and really enjoyed it.
From the big paintings and statues in the main lobby, to the dildo carefully placed in the mineral section.
The selection here don't show the half of it, there were over 100 pieces.
I'm suprised you didn't include the Guantanimo prisoner on the wright brothers plane. - dyysan, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6^^ cool! the effect of this thread is like a poll. that is both clever and obvious
- skyjis6, on 07/05/2009, -4/+9He consistently produces great art. This iteration is no exception. I wish i could afford some of his work.
- nevetssav, on 07/05/2009, -2/+7Don't talk about "if he did his work on canvas" - the medium is a major part of the artwork itself.
- 0biKwiet, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6His technique isn't as good as as the masters, but it says something which is a lot more than be said for the typical attention whore artists who think they're oh so clever for trolling with generic meaningless garbage.
And really this is more than just social commentary. It contrasts classical ideal humanity with (arguably) greatest real society humanity has been able to produce. - inactive, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5Dugg for aging tweetie bird. Where's sylvester?
- scojac, on 07/05/2009, -2/+6@guacamolesam:
wtf? most of this stuff is making fun of the stuffy museum status that most artwork has (e.g. the stick figures commenting about the golden frame pic). it's pretty ironic that you consider these pieces banksy's "actual artwork" and his "street work" as just messages to the masses.
tl;dr: you missed the point. banksy tries to break down the distinction you (ironically?) make between "street/mass" art and "real" art - w3ber, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3630/3687450589_df1 ...
