- BetterOffEd, on 08/25/2008, -5/+146Artists have to *eat* though. If more of them saw a future in actually "making it" on their own, they'd leave the ad agencies in droves. It's one of the only viable options for artists to find any kind of professional stability in today's world.
I'm certainly not defending the ad industry by any means, but what's preventing artists/graphic designers employed by agencies from painting or creating their own work in their free time outside of their 9-to-5?
(I dugg this anyway, merely for the eloquent quote.) - Onji, on 08/24/2008, -8/+124I hope we some day build a statue to honor Banksy.
I don't know how we'll make the face, though... - steelersfan7roe, on 08/25/2008, -8/+122HAVE SOME BRAWNDO! THE THIRST MUTILATOR!

BRAWNDO! THE THIRST MUTILATOR! - inactive, on 08/24/2008, -14/+112I ***** love Banksy
- knightwalkerz, on 08/25/2008, -0/+61i think keeping his work up and not tearing it down would be enough.
- Bjango, on 08/24/2008, -12/+73That's a really cool quote.
- BlaqReaper, on 08/25/2008, -6/+52How about the Renaissance?
- wwwonka, on 08/25/2008, -3/+42Modern art IS a joke....BUT advertising is the punch line.
- fugazied, on 08/25/2008, -2/+35That movie was under-rated imo.
- PrintScrn12, on 08/25/2008, -0/+31Creativity in visual arts and engineering are different in type not depth. The prior requires self-expression and aesthetics, the latter ingenuity.
- rwallen, on 08/25/2008, -1/+31He is right of course. I'm a graphic designer by day to pay the bills and by night I paint. Unfortunately I don't think I could paint professionally as their is no way it would pay as well. Most people seem to buy art as they would buy a gossip magazine, whatever piece has the more famous name on it will sell and the message rarely matters.
I shouldn't really complain, I've sold over 100 paintings in the last 10 months, but the lure of the marketing department paycheck has kept me from pursuing it full time. - timmyd803, on 08/24/2008, -14/+41We have modern art?
- supertom, on 08/24/2008, -2/+28Easy there tiger.
- Jger, on 08/25/2008, -0/+26Nah man, just sculpt a dog jumping across his face.
- crazyechidna83, on 08/25/2008, -0/+25Its got what plants crave.

What are electrolytes?
what plants crave. - Sil369, on 08/25/2008, -7/+32DENTAL PLAN, Lisa needs braces, DENTAL PLAN, Lisa needs braces...
- Glamp, on 08/25/2008, -1/+26I'll have some of that IN A ROCKET CAN!
- geardosdotnet, on 08/25/2008, -1/+23Generally artists sell art. That's how they eat.
- quomen, on 08/25/2008, -1/+23Tiger, or Tigra?
- Sornos, on 08/25/2008, -1/+21Man I hate people like you. You're the type to call someone elitist if they say they're better than you are at something. Guess what, some people are better at things than other people. Banksy is a great artist and his stuff is a whole lot better than a majority of art of there.
- 17999, on 08/25/2008, -1/+21Couldn't make it in advertising, eh?
- ThinkBox, on 08/25/2008, -0/+19Its sad - Im trying to work as a freelance photographer.. I'm an artist, and yet I have to just figure out how to use that so I can sell people crap they probably dont need, so that I can make money and buy crap I probably dont need. :-/
- Thekirby45, on 08/25/2008, -13/+31v
- Vidalsassgirlie, on 08/25/2008, -13/+31I hate to break up the Banksy circle jerk, but can any of you actually think of a time where more has been done and said with art than it has today?
- engwar, on 08/25/2008, -0/+18Wasn't that Warhol's point?
- meamog, on 08/25/2008, -0/+18In the best cases, both can require all of the above.
- geneusutwerk, on 08/25/2008, -0/+18Leave it headless, Banksy would probably enjoy that more. Or just use a balloon and a black marker.
- CaptainJapan, on 08/25/2008, -0/+18And I can't wait for Banksy to "fix" it.
- ratherawesome, on 08/25/2008, -1/+16You guys are confusing Brawndo with Powerthirst
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+14Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could earn a living doing their hobbies?
/ sarc???? - 2ptyou, on 08/25/2008, -2/+16Re-read the quote. It's amount said by art on y-axis and amount of materials used on x-axis. The point is not that little is being said, it's that so little is being said with so much waste.
Look at the Damien Hirst diamond skull if you want to know what he means. - Jack8274, on 08/25/2008, -2/+16You make a good point, but I am going to bury you because I don't give a ***** about what you think. I can like anyone I want, and your bitching won't change the mind of anybody.
- Ivorydrive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+14but... it... had what plants craved :-( It had electrolytes.

You sound a lot like some 11 year old kid who has never worked a day in your life. - Rodalli, on 08/25/2008, -1/+14The reason most non-artists don't understand modern art is because they have no perspective of where art has been over the past few hundred years. For literally centuries, artists have been creating the same kind of representational work. The drive to break away from that and to "create for ones' self" rather than to represent something to an audience is what has been driving art for the past century.
The audience has to understand that art isn't about them anymore and stop ranting about it and just accept it. If you like it, fine, if you don't, also fine. But just remember that we also don't have to care if you like it or not. - jpjandrade, on 08/25/2008, -3/+16Except that it sucked, besides the smart idea.
- jman583, on 08/25/2008, -0/+13It's call modern "art".

- Kauzman01, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12A statue with a blank area for the face like a mannequin without a face would be a good tribute to his anonymity.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+13With college debt, too... I mean, *****, most graduates have to earn X amount just to stay afloat.
- SwedishNinja, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12If you don't smoke Tareytons, then...
***** YOU! - gorbachev22, on 08/25/2008, -4/+15I sure can. Let's say the 1930s during the Spanish civil war. Both within the struggle and to bring the struggle to the rest of the world. Not that I have a strong dislike for contemporary art, rather I tend to enjoy it, but it certainly doesn't "do" much. Art in the early 20th century seemed to be tied a little more directly to politics and popular debate.
- swern425, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Yes, considering next to no one knows his identity, he clearly cares that much about his self image.
- snareguy17, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12I need some electrolytes right now.
- wordson, on 08/25/2008, -7/+18Right after this, he sold another piece to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
I'm not a Banksy fanboy, but I do respect him for staying anonymous this long. And that quote is very true and amusing. - blackguard, on 08/25/2008, -2/+12Has no one considered the possibility that advertising is Modern Art?
- Vidalsassgirlie, on 08/25/2008, -2/+12To those that keep saying the Renaissance, all of this art was still created for and mostly used by the elite. Today we have accessible books, movies, music, plays, and poems. not only are these used for entertainment, but they are also used to bring awareness to problems in the world. There was a movement to create realistic art. We are now doing this with computers and making truly 3d experiences.
Anybody can go to a library and see it for free. We also have mandatory schooling so we can produce intelligent people who can keep the ball rolling.
The Renaissance also focused on science. I don't need to expound on the numerous recent scientific advancements. We have cures, vaccines, nanotechnology, etc. We also have the internet which brings you all of the information in the world to your fingertips.
The Renaissance was great but it certainly didn't give us more than we're producing now. - mglueckert, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10YOU ARE AN UNFIT MOTHER!

underrated and i wish it had been better. - Idietired, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10@HencheMann:
How do you exist as "highly" educated and still have "bad" credit? Doesn't the latter negate the former?
It seems like one would have a hard time claiming general superiority and complete financial irresponsibility in the same sentence, but then maybe I'm not educated highly enough to understand how that works since I dropped out of community college and became immediately self-employed. You just keep stickin' it to the man, dude ... I'll be over here, signing my checks on the front.
Also, what's your excuse for being a spoiled *****?
(P.S. "Nothing to nobody" is a double-negative ... you should get a refund for that masters degree) -
