In any case, if Eisenhower really wrote this quote exactly as it appears, he may be the only person in history to defeat the real Nazis but lose to the grammar Nazis - it's not "it's," it's "its."

There's a lot of thought that goes into instruments of war; they're superbly tuned to the lethality of their purpose and, in a macabre way, works of art. Watch a jet fighter pirouette at altitude and dive towards you some time ... gulping air and belching it in a long, superheated and noisy exhalation. As frightening as the sight is, it also inspires awe and wonder. Walk on the deck of an aircraft carrier ... it's expansive operations deck extending so far in all directions you have no sense at all of being on a hunk of metal floating at sea. Watch an M1 tank roaring along at sixty or seventy miles an hour, it's turret swiveling and blasting shells that are precision guided and nearly guaranteed to hit their target regardless of how rough the terrain is or how fast the tank goes.

    I don't think it's at all impossible for a reasonable mind to simultaneously contemplate the extraordinary work that's gone into these machines while abhorring their intended purpose.

    He once made the world's largest balloontunnel in Brussels.
