- fjsferreira, on 12/14/2008, -0/+37BBC, I hope you seed this, don't be a leecher!
- mickstephenson, on 12/14/2008, -1/+31The BBC seems to be on a good path these days, positioning themselves to lead a new age in media distribution, with work on the open source Dirac codec, and the work they have done with delivering free content with gstreamer in Totem they look to have in the wings a very open free media distribution platform. The only question is how are they going to adapt their funding mechanism as they move towards the future? Surely people won't pay for a TV license when they are releasing stuff online for free, I personally don't want to see advertising compromise the BBC's objectivity.
- tnerd, on 12/14/2008, -4/+33History is being made... be a part of it..digg!
- rand21althor, on 12/14/2008, -0/+19Wouldn't it be neat if more lost episodes of "Doctor Who" were found this way?
It's not going to happen, but the audio recordings for lost episodes still exist. Perhaps animation could bring these episodes back, as has been done with the Troughton-era story "The Invasion". - coldkill3r, on 12/14/2008, -2/+21Nice. P2P is a great source of great old albums and classic movies.
- Murdats, on 12/15/2008, -1/+13storage space wasn't the only reason shows were destroyed.
at the time the actors union was worried it would eventually be put out of work by the networks showing only repeats, so there was a limit on how many times a show could be re-aired.
because of this the networks felt it pointless to spend money storing something that could never be aired again and thus make them no money. so because of the actors union of the time we have irretrievably lost many culturally significant works. - mickstephenson, on 12/14/2008, -0/+10I saw something on TV about this the other day, about the process they use in retrieving the colour by analysing dot patterns in the black and white film, and in that they showed clips of old Doctor Who episodes at the same time as the voice over was saying they hope to use this technique on other black and white recordings in the BBC archive.
So there is a heavy insinuation there that is exactly their plan. So it looks like you may get your wish. - inactive, on 12/15/2008, -0/+9You like Doctor Who? Thank pirates. They're the reason we have what little we have of the First Doctor and Second Doctor eras. Very few episodes were actually saved.
- Stavrosian, on 12/15/2008, -0/+9For anybody who doesn't know, their "detection equipment" consists of empty vans driving around pretending to detect things. The only checks they have are database ones.
- h0dges, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9My, how the tables hath turned!
- youwanker, on 12/14/2008, -5/+12"Using a television without an appropriate licence is a criminal offence. Every day we catch an average of 1,200 people using a TV without a licence. There is no valid excuse for using a television and not having a TV Licence, but some people still try - sometimes with the most ridiculous stories ever heard. Our detection equipment will track down your TV. The fact that our enquiry officers are now so well equipped with the latest technology means that there is virtually no way to avoid detection."
I hope the ship sinks soon. - borez, on 12/15/2008, -0/+6 The BBC is a public broadcast company paid for by British subjects, therefore IMO the guy's not really a pirate.
- palehorse864, on 12/15/2008, -0/+5A similar thing happened with John Cleese and Crew's "At Last the 1948 Show" a precursor to Monty Python. They were destroying the archives of the show and John Cleese got wind of it and ran down to save what they hadn't managed to destroy, probably yelling at them as well. A lot of material was lost, probably quite a bit of material by the late Marty Feldman and Graham Chapman that will never be recovered. I'm assuming with no factual basis that John Cleese promptly gave them a good talking to and a rather British clonk on the noggin before promptly defenestrating each and every one of them and then doing a silly walk out of the building with what he managed to save.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/15/2008, -0/+5LIES!
- rand21althor, on 12/15/2008, -0/+4Cool! Thanks for the info.
I really hope they could retrieve episodes from the serial "Marco Polo" this way. - agaiziunas, on 12/15/2008, -1/+5Pirates should charge BBC licensing fees to get and use the content.
- hermizzle, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3I see what you did there!
- raydeen, on 12/15/2008, -3/+6Dammit, no one at the BBC is using their head! THEY HAVE THE FECKING TARDIS!!! Just nip back 40 years or so and make copies of all these great shows!! Problem solved!!
- A11YND, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3He was just making some drm-less back ups.
- borez, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3As somebody who's actually been in a couple of vast BBC tape archives, I can fully understand why they felt the need to dump some of their stuff.
- raydeen, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3Bite your tongue.
- rayok, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3in the dim and distant past it was possible to pick up emissions from tvs and computer monitors to either see if they were watching tv or snoop on their computer systmes but in 198? new emission regs were brought in which meant this could no longer work. Apparently German TV's were always built to these lower emission reqs anyway
- scratend0788, on 12/15/2008, -0/+3they are doing it now.
the iplayer interface is a bit confusing at times tough, look again - BossKey, on 12/15/2008, -0/+2Serious question. In the past it was said that they detected televisions by an electromagnetic emission that traditional TVs generated. Has this ever been true, and if so, how has it been changed by flat panel digital televisions?
- lattrig, on 12/15/2008, -0/+2Interesting how they recovered the colour information from black and white film, the technique could be used for some of the old Dr Who episodes next.
http://digg.com/television/Unscrambling_an_army_of ... - Fartbandit, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2They are indeed streaming BBC1 and BBC2 live via BBC iplayer right now and have been doing for the past 2 weeks or so. It all depends on whats being broadcast however as most non BBC content is blocked from streamign transmissiomn
- Fartbandit, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1Being British is great... But with institutions such as the BBC around sometimes being British is ***** awesome....
- PopcornDave, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1There's a lot of old radio shows from here in the US that have been lost as well, particularly a series called The Whistler. It would be really cool if someone had recorded those as well so they could be heard again.
- Shirleycakes, on 12/15/2008, -1/+2Except the intellectual property in question doesn't belong to the pirates.
- jakrinda, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1I am an American so I cannot understand what is being discussed! Only the re-coloring of old Dr. Who shows I can understand.
- MAARRS, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?
- IIECONII, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1I don't understand why a race to be the first major-TV network ONLY ONLINE would be a BAD thing.
As the percent of internet-usage-population increases towards, arbitrarily, 95%; and when internet-media-centric home-theaters become upwards of the same %, why wouldn't online media be the ONLY way to go?
More ads are coming people, let's hope they're short.
*looks at ABP*
She's not gonna' hold for much longer kepptin'! - Shirleycakes, on 12/15/2008, -1/+2Hey dude, I don't want to be the one to spoil this for you....but...Dr. Who is just a TV show. Y'know? Fiction?
- skratakh, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1They've already adapted it, so you get sent a letter if you buy a pc or enough computer components to build one.
- TyrannousDotNet, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1BLIMEY!
- mrhahn, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1They're also looking to start streaming BBC1/2 live online in the near future. That will require a TV license, although how they'll check I'm not sure.
- inactive, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1It is,now goto hell.
- jamesmcginnis, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1How do they detect you if you don't have a TV and you watch online!!??
- ohreilly, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1I'm getting the impression that the BBC is being painted as a hypocrite, relying on "pirate audio". But have the BBC actually really tried to enforce their rights in the same way that the RIAA, MPAA etc have tried?
I have never seen the BBC send nastygrams to anyone for a bit of torrenting. - dandonia, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1They will increase what the licence pays for. The TV licence started as a Radio licence and kept expanding.
- Systembomber, on 12/15/2008, -1/+1I refuse to buy a TV license. Even if they did somehow force their way in, the USB dongle would be long gone.
- d2002, on 12/15/2008, -1/+1Thou shall not pirate!
- GrooTheWanderer, on 12/15/2008, -2/+2Requiring an appropriate license for a television is a tyrannical offence. Every day we harass an average of 1,200 people for using their own televisions without our permission. There is no valid excuse for demanding a license for a television, but we still try to justify it - sometimes with the most ridiculous stories ever heard. Our tales about detection equipment will hopefully intimidate you into acquiescence. The fact that our goons will be constantly in your face with the latest technology means it will be less trouble for you to just cough up right now. Resistance is futile.

- decet, on 12/15/2008, -1/+1The idea of a broadcaster actually destroying material that has been paid for by the taxpayers is... is... is...
Shucks, folks, I'm speechless.
Even if the tapes could no longer have been aired in the UK (where the actors' union could strong-arm them), the BBC could have licensed the broadcasting of these shows abroad and reclaim some of the Shillings and Pounds that went into their production.
No, no, no. Preposterous. - mhmdkhamis, on 02/05/2009, -0/+0… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … ______
