Awesome Light Graffiti Pictures

abduzeedo.com — Long Exposure pictures can get pretty awesome if you have the right ideas. One of the coolest ideas is to make sweet light graffiti with this camera option.During all summer I've played with it, and made some nice pictures (some other day I'll post it), but not as nice as some of these pictures right here!

Why don't you try again and explain why he is wrong, instead of stating your own brilliance and mocking him.

    • DeskFlyer, on 04/03/2008, -0/+25Because the light source you are painting with projects highly contrasting light to the CCD sensor (or film if you are still into that) and your person isn't. If you move quickly enough, you won't be seen at all. Even if you hang out in one spot for a duration of the exposure, you'll still only see a ghost of yourself. The longer the exposure, the better the results.

      There are other factors to consider, such as what clothes you are wearing, the ambient lighting conditions, background, etc.

They set the shutter for a long time, (from 2 to 30+ seconds) (F3.5 or bigger also), but when the shutter opens, you can set the camera to flash initial, flooding the room or whatever. THEN mess around with the flashlight,lighter,LED etc.

How does the photographer and his light twirling and writing subject not get exposed in the film. I have tried and failed at this as my subject and their hands appear in the picture. Can someone give me an inside hint?
    • DeskFlyer, on 04/03/2008, -1/+5Please see my reply to the post above. Also, have you tried wearing black gloves and clothing? It should help prevent you from reflecting any ambient light from whatever you're holding back into the camera.

      Long exposure, no ambient...no "ghost" images of painter in the photo.

    • ChayD, on 04/03/2008, -0/+10Howto: draw explosion graffitti in pitch dark room with shutter open, ask friends to jump, then fire just the flash (with the shutter still open) Result is that the flash lights up and exposes friends at the moment they jump, leaving them otherwise unexposed whilst the drawing is taking place.

    • ohhector, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Don't be so quick to call "photoshop" on everything...if you'd take a moment to actually LOOK at the photos and see how inconsistent the lights are you'd see for sure that it wasn't a photoshop job at all.

Never did anything as elaborate as some of the stuff shown in the article, but it's definitely a fun thing to mess with, and doesn't necessarily take a whole lot of skill to make something that looks pretty cool, too. Really fun to mess with.

    I just wonder why they call it "Graffiti"? There's nothing of the Graffiti-spirit in those pictures, since they neither have a political statement nor do they last and are seen on public spaces.

    It's all "digital" stuff. And being digital stuff, I wonder why this should be cool (compared to all the other things on deviantart or flickr). Apart from the fun people are obviously having while making them.
