- luke16, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11Dupe, i saw this on Digg homepage back in 1839.
- Cathbad, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9Why not use a pop up blocker? I didn't see any popups.
- suckanucka, on 08/19/2008, -1/+7Its called... "We employ too many people and must saturate our content with ads"..or they just care about maximizing profits at the expense of a good user experience.
- Mjeacoma, on 08/19/2008, -2/+8What's up with Wired's desperately annoying pop-up ad? Good article but the ad made me want to close it...
- orirawlings, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5It is open source in the sense that they made the details of their photographic process available to the public. I know there is no "source" or "computer code" in this tale, but the idea is entirely the same.
- wrockwood, on 08/19/2008, -0/+5hey farva! what's that software you like with the fruity ***** in the code comments?
- ligyron, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4Read the article, not sure what it has to do with open source...
- MattB123, on 08/19/2008, -0/+4I didn't see it with FF3 and ABP (not sure if ABP had anything to do with it but it seemed worth mentioning just in case).
- maz2331, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3Because properly prepared and stored Daguerreotypes are well-nigh permanent artifacts. It's a silver/mercury amalgam that simply isn't going anywhere unless oxidized.
Unless air gets to them, they are stable forever.
A lot of older photos may still have traces of fixer or acid in the paper that slowly destroys the image. Many older color photo dyes (with the exception of properly stored Kodachromes) are also not long term stable. Polaroids - forget about them after 30 years. I have some old ones that I had to scan and enhance just to recover the old images.
- Falldog, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3Step 1: Google masturbation techniques
Step 2: Share own techniques with others
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Open source masturbation! - wespadfield, on 08/19/2008, -0/+3"make all the steps of the new process public and France would 'then nobly give to the whole world this discovery which could contribute so much to the progress of art and science.'--that's the essence of open source.
Daguerre didn't patent the process and build a personal fortune from it.
Imagine if Edison had made sure everyone was free to make or change his inventions, releasing them to the world in a free and open source way; how much more technologically advanced would we be today? - LoudMusic, on 08/19/2008, -1/+4Ah, the value and impact of open source technology. It improves the lives of the entire world.
- Jethris, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2I don't think we would. Without the financial incentives, we would probably have less technology than we do today.
And the only reason he got any money at all was from the government, whose job it should not be to pay patent holders. - PeachCobbler, on 08/19/2008, -3/+5Dugg for the story, but the title warrants a bury..
- SmpleJohn, on 08/19/2008, -2/+4I clicked on this link hoping to find the best deal on a car. Didn't you?
- aserer511, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2gutenberg was the first hardware developer
WHAT NOW - kraetos, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Buried for the ***** title.
- nobody98, on 08/19/2008, -0/+2Popups are soo 90s
- maz2331, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Not quite - there was a patent in Britain that prevented the free use of the Daguerreotype process there, while the rest of the world used it freely.
- nobody98, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Open source in title = More diggs
- SoundJudgment, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1How in the hell can they show a pristine photograph from the early 1800s, and I can't even save a deteriorated photo that was buried in some shoe-box, of Aunt Petunia from 20 years ago??
- Doomsan, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1What's with Harry Osborn on the top?
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+0I believe the open source thing isn't quite correct. Most other countries could use the technology for free, but I believe they charged Britain for its use, just to spite their age old enemy. Has anyone else heard of this or have a source?
http://www.yomuzik.net/ Yo Muzik , Yo Music, Muzik, Yo Musik - slugicide, on 08/19/2008, -2/+2If it were Apple who had invented the technology...
- metamethod, on 08/19/2008, -1/+1pension?
the government paid the fixed royalties. - JoeF8577, on 08/19/2008, -2/+1dugg for the witty title.
- thecretinisback, on 08/19/2008, -4/+2I believe the open source thing isn't quite correct. Most other countries could use the technology for free, but I believe they charged Britain for its use, just to spite their age old enemy. Has anyone else heard of this or have a source?
