- StaticThunder, on 10/09/2008, -17/+133There is no such thing as a sin. Only societal rules and norms.
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -32/+135Religion - FTL.
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -27/+121Christianity = Being a coward.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -3/+70Atheists don't claim to *know* anything except reality as they perceive it. It's other religions that are trying to convince us that when we die, we're going to go see an anthropomorphized sky daddy in a special place of happiness.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -6/+72Religion is losing because it does and has always claimed to have all the answers. People are waking up the the fact that religious people are no smarter, and in most cases a LOT dumber then the average person. So if as a group they are so dumb, how is that that they have answers the rest of us do not?
Obviously, they don't. Its just a lie that they all choose to believe in. - inactive, on 10/10/2008, -2/+61Reverse logic does not work on atheists. YOU are making the extraordinary claim, YOU must provide the evidence to back it up.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -3/+59Thor crushes all other deities with is mighty hammer Mjolnir!
- johnnick, on 10/10/2008, -0/+55You need to work on that a little, then. When it's incomprehensible, the sarcasm fails.
- johnnick, on 10/09/2008, -3/+50Care to explain that a little more, De4our? What do you actually mean by "Being a coward to your sins."?
- charm803, on 10/10/2008, -6/+46Here is a youtube video about the statistics between Atheists and religious people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiCtMXvCNQw - TheCatsPants, on 10/10/2008, -1/+38"Beliefs are there, within yourself as well as other atheists regardless of your willingness to admit to them."
Depends what you mean by belief. I believe that the scientific method works. I don't have 'unquestioning faith' that the scientific theories we currently use are complete and comprehensive. In fact, it's more interesting when they are found to be wrong. Does that sound like religious faith? - Comatose51, on 10/11/2008, -3/+31Dear Monotheists:
You'd better pray that there's only one God.
Dear Polytheists:
You'd better pray that you've been worshiping the right God. - StaticThunder, on 10/10/2008, -1/+27Its very difficult to parody religious people, because parody has to be extreme relative to whatever its attempting to mock.
- TheCatsPants, on 10/10/2008, -2/+27"How then can you claim certainty that there is no metamorphosis after death."
We're not. It's just that there is no known mechanism by which such a transformation can take place. There is equally as little evidence for an afterlife as there is against it. Therefore we have to go with what we know about the universe from which we have to say the chances are that there isn't an afterlife. I'd love it if there was, but I'm not expecting it. - slothlovechunk, on 10/11/2008, -3/+27I agree.
There is something courageous about facing the truth of our condition no matter how it makes you feel.
Truth to me is more important than giving myself some comfort. - BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -1/+23What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.
- slothlovechunk, on 10/11/2008, -0/+21There is no inherent justice in the universe, unfortunately.
These mass murderers did not kill people because they were atheists, no more than Stalin and Hitler killed people because they have mustaches. One has nothing to do with the other.
On the other hand, people who actually believe in something often do things because of these beliefs. I don't really understand how someone can do something because they don't believe in something. It doesn't work like that. You can't take action for an absence of belief. - ApokalypseNow, on 10/11/2008, -0/+21Atheism - the lack of belief in the supernatural. This includes elves, pixies, leprechauns, Santa Claus, and all deities. If you have objective, empirical evidence for the existence of the supernatural, or even your flavor of it in particular, then let's hear it.
- p0op, on 10/11/2008, -28/+48Okay, we get it, Digg is full of a bunch of Atheists.
I hear more about religion here, than anywhere else on the internet. - Gallowspoling, on 10/11/2008, -0/+20Odd that you would describe your god in such a way "But verily thy Lord is full of forgiveness for mankind for their wrong-doing", but state very clearly in your opening sentence that your desire is that Atheists should burn in hell, and that God should sanction such a choice, rather then for these same Atheists to become your particular religion. Seems to me like the inherent contradiction in your statements betrays you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -7/+26I write sentences. They end in periods. Even when I ask questions. Why do I do this. It is ridiculous. It is monotonous. Why don't I ever stop.
Did you READ my post, you idiot? Read it, read it again and then post a response. Moron. - StaticThunder, on 10/10/2008, -4/+23This is a misunderstanding of Karma. Karma says that we are all connected; individuality is an illusion created by the mind, so that when that little girl gets raped, *I* am being raped as well. The perpetrator and the victim are part of the same whole, they just don't realize it. You create the world with your actions, and you have to live in it.
Its not about "getting your comeuppance" as portrayed in the media. - JigoroKano, on 10/10/2008, -4/+23Karma/Samsara teaches that you are (read were) the ultimate cause of all good and evil that befalls you.
So if a 4 year old girl gets gang raped, then in a past life she must have done something to deserve it.
Can you honestly not see anything wrong with that? - slappy83, on 10/11/2008, -0/+18When was the last time you took your medication?
- slothlovechunk, on 10/11/2008, -3/+21Christians. The group who lives their whole life in a fantasy world of their own creation.
- eyepennies, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18This "open-minded Christian" 's bio says,
"Pretty soon if this radical liberal movement has its way, we will be a homogonized society, unable to think for oursleves... simply spoon-fed politcally correct rhetoric.... Oh and to the non-believers, God is my Captain."
Yes, and she's one of the "open-minded" ones!!! - alpharaptor, on 10/11/2008, -0/+17sarcasm FAIL
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18Absolutely FALSE. Atheists do not actively believe "There is no God." You cannot prove a negative like that. They simply are not religious. They don't see any valid evidence for "God," any more than they do for Unicorns.
Atheism literally means "lack of theism." Just like asexual means lack of sexuality. - jnorris441, on 10/11/2008, -2/+18Living without God isn't easy? I think it's pretty alright. Dealing with the reality of death doesn't make your life harder, it just puts everything you do into perspective. So I'm not going to be floating around on a cloud for eternity, I can handle that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -7/+23
Atheism is a religion like bald is a hairstyle - secrity, on 10/11/2008, -8/+24I don't hope either way; I simply don't give a *****. I have no reason to believe in a sky daddy, so I don't.
- smoothmann, on 10/11/2008, -20/+36I've lived without god in my life - my whole life. I'm just fine. Got everything and everyone I could ask for, without asking for it.
God is an imaginary friend for adults in my opinion.
Show me the proof he existed, or show me the proof we're created by man, and the bible doesnt count. - smoothmann, on 10/11/2008, -2/+17Christians: The group who begs for everything they want to a person that doesn't exist, or ever existed, even on their deathbed. How's that workin out for ya?
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -7/+22Atheism is a religion like bald is a hairstyle
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+19When you're too scared to handle this life without the security blanket of an imaginary friend who loves you, I call you a coward.
- dezweber, on 10/10/2008, -11/+25Right. I have a problem in stating that absolutely all things in the world can be weighed and measured. I think it takes the same amount of self-delusion to be that arrogant that it does to believe in a false god.
Great, but long, article. - nodong, on 10/11/2008, -8/+22Actually there is not even nothing after death. There is only life during life. People get freaked out by death because they try to imagine an eternity of nothing. There is no such thing as nothing.
- zenbud, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14The consequences come, kind one. They come immediately and in real time. Conversely, rewards do, too - in the smiles of service and humanity. No promise of gold paved roads and castles in the air. Not vitriol and divisiveness either. Too much bloodshed over one's belief versus anothers. As a Buddhist, I pray for you.
- eyepennies, on 10/11/2008, -6/+20I don't have to show you proof that he doesn't exist:
1. the burden of proof lies with the person making the positive assertion, not the person denying that positive assertion.
2. Show me proof that fluffy pink lesbian unicorns named Mel don't exist. You can't? Then they must exist!
I completely respect your right to believe in fairy tales. I won't even kill you for it, although I will probably make fun of you a little bit. I'm pretty sure that religious zealots HAVE, however, killed lots and lots of people throughout history for not believing in their personal fairy tales. And, while some people say that Atheists have killed loads too, it must be pointed out that they never did so in the NAME of Atheism, whereas the ghastly, long history of religious slaughter can be said to have been carried out "in the name of God."
I totally agree with you, we should all strive to appreciate and respect each other in spite of our differences. History being what it is, I think "believers" should probably be a little quicker to look at their own intolerances before so handily jumping to what non-believers (the minority and oppressed throughout history) ought to be doing. - eyepennies, on 10/11/2008, -1/+15You don't sound like a Buddhist to me. You sound like a JudeoChristian who has found Buddhism and injected your own personal belief system into your own conception of Buddhism. The Buddha instructed, "Strip yourself of all belief. Let the present moment, unfiltered by thought-forms and your conceptions, be your teacher."
- inactive, on 10/10/2008, -1/+14Incorrect. An atheist does not believe in any deity because such belief in superstition is unreasonable. Or are you agnostic to Zeus, Odin and Ra as well?
- gkwillie, on 10/11/2008, -3/+16I always thought that A-theism was simply a lack of belief in God. I would say that the belief that god does NOT exist would be considered ANTI-theism. Atheism is a belief like not collecting stamps is a hobby, but I suppose it really is a matter of semantics.
- charm803, on 10/10/2008, -8/+21I think we earned it, after putting up with people who keep wanting to "save my soul" when they find out I'm an atheist.
Plus, I was a dedicated Christian for a few years. Does that count? - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -3/+16If there's a god out there who's so petty as to punish me for being a good, moral, reasonable person who helps his fellow man but doesn't believe in him, then please, and you can quote me on this:
He can go ***** himself. Right in his divine ass. - StaticThunder, on 10/10/2008, -2/+15"If the perp and the victim are one in the same, what lessons does that teach or what purpose does such a belief have?"
That you should extend the compassion you normally reserve for yourself to others. See them the way you see yourself.
"I see karma as religious guilt without a deity? "
Really? How so? Where in Buddhism does it say you should feel bad about something that you have done? How does that make the universe a better place? Is increasing pointless suffering a good thing? Guilt is not going to change what has already happened.
"Simply realize that being kind to others makes them like you, thus benefiting you; concentrate on making your life good, no need to gain Karma kudos by spreading your own personal beliefs (or trying to force them) on others."
So the only reason you would be kind to people is to get something back?
Karma is not about kudos. In my understanding, it says that everything follows from a network of interconnected causes that nothing is separate from.
The individuality thing is too hard to explain. Without air, food, etc... you would die. So can you rightfully consider yourself to have an independent existence from those things? And to a lesser extent, everything in the cosmos affects you and makes you who you think you are. If you had different friends, would you be the same person? So how can you say that they are disconnected and separate from you? You have no independent existence. If you take actions without realizing this you are likely to suffer. Thats karma. A web of interactions. Pulling on one part of the web somewhere affects everything else.
I'm not touching the whole reincarnation thing. I think thats the same fear of dying the Christians have so they invent an afterlife. - FreeTalkLIve, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13People believe in a God because someone they trust told them that there is a God. A spoken word, a rumor.
Without being told or taught of the concept of God, what would you believe? - Dimensio, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13" The only claim I am arguing is against the statement that there is no afterlife."
An "afterlife" is a positive assertion. As such, it requires supporting evidence. The null hypothesis -- that is, the rejection of the assertion -- is the default position in the absence of any evidence.
Human consciousness is a result of events in the brain. Upon death, these events cease. There exists no evidence that human consciousness could exist absent these events. - allhere25, on 10/11/2008, -2/+14Even if they did pray on their deathbed it still wouldn't make god real, just people hypocritical.
- Dimensio, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13"I'm an atheist, and I don't really bother myself with the whole life after death thing too often, but I will tell you this, from an atheist's point of view: every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and energy is constant. By those principles alone, I wonder sometimes: where does the energy go?"
Eventually it dissipates into unusable heat. - wacked, on 10/11/2008, -0/+12Not religious propaganda! Say it ain't so!
A ghostly whisper comes from over my shoulder... "It is as has been written."
I'm so afraid! I can just feel the ionization of the air, I can just feel the lightening readying itself to strike me down! Please save me from my sins! Please give me the answer to my guilt ridden conscience!
No!
You spout beautiful words, only in repetition, with meaning you will never fully grasp, believing instead that these words came not from mere poets, from mere men's mouths, in some sense only to enslave you.
Take the teachings of love and brotherhood from all great writings, but see the application of the words, and the reason for them, and see the chains that have been forged to bind your soul, and to keep you from freedom!
You are a slave. -
