Artist photographs 'invisible' people
dailymail.co.uk — In the natural world, the chameleon blends in perfectly with its background. In the urban jungle, Desiree Palmen decided to attempt the same visual deception. It takes hours for her to paint the suits. First she takes photographs of the scene then, back in the studio, she meticulously transfers the detail on to the cotton suit with acrylic paints.

- principlePwr, on 02/24/2008, -14/+4awesome.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+2Yeah, and I admire that she spends so much time actually painting the background on the suit. I would just take a picture of the empty location, then get someone in with a green suit and blend / Photoshop the two together while distorting / liquiffying.
- tonicboy, on 02/24/2008, -37/+18whatever, that's nothing. check out this picture where i did the same thing, except i blended the suit perfectly. top that!

- mparker7410, on 02/24/2008, -23/+2Why not just use Photoshop to create the effect and call it a day?
- johndi, on 02/24/2008, -1/+8She is not just taking photos in a studio. She enjoys people's reaction when they see it on the street. You can't do that on a computer.
- Supernova36, on 02/24/2008, -9/+19Wow, slow news day for the Mail! These are old.
- danjwray, on 02/25/2008, -0/+2Yup, there were no paedophiles to scare-monger over, nor asylum seekers to pick on today.
- barnis, on 02/24/2008, -14/+2why not just use a projector to project onto the subject?
- IphtashuFitz, on 02/24/2008, -0/+9A projector can't project JUST on the subject.
- Hraes, on 02/24/2008, -1/+7Also, that is completely not the point.
- DCUK, on 02/24/2008, -9/+41Is there anyway to block a site from coming up on DIGG? I know you can block sections, but what about individual sites?
I'm sick of dailymails flooding of this site and don't want or need to see their stories.- stonedthot, on 02/24/2008, -2/+9ditto
- Roblodocus, on 02/24/2008, -1/+5At least it isn't The Sun or The Mirror.
- FriedTurkey, on 02/24/2008, -8/+3Yeah dailymail has all that readin in it. Plus it is foreign. I just want something so about video games so I can copy and paste my fanboy talking points.
- DCUK, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1You're talking about a tabloid paper.
- stonedthot, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1It ain't foreign to me mate, just *****. I read real newspapers not gossip columns that happen to be printed on paper.
- salazarmark, on 02/24/2008, -32/+5Ohhhh ohhh I'm gonna do it the hard way, I'll use paint and call it ART. Use photoshop bitch and PRESTO DONE, plus you're not harming your environment. I hate idiots like this.
- chedabob, on 02/24/2008, -4/+18I hate idiots like you.
- Blandyman, on 02/24/2008, -1/+10I think this sort of work has much more artistic merit if they paint it...
plus, the paint's already in the can... she's just using it to paint onto a suit... i don't see what's harming the environment. - blackhydra, on 02/24/2008, -2/+4Holy *****, you're an idiot.
- Greenergrass, on 02/24/2008, -2/+4Impressive work. I want to be drawn inside a fall.
- moletimer, on 02/24/2008, -2/+21These pictures are amazing, especially the bookshelf one. Awesome.
- IphtashuFitz, on 02/24/2008, -4/+4That table with the news papers took me a moment to figure out. Quite impressive.
- briguymaine, on 02/24/2008, -7/+36very cool. not to take anythiing away from the artist but isn't there a way to get this effect in photoshop with texture mapping or something? Just something I've wanted to try.
- cidman2001, on 02/24/2008, -12/+4Super-dumb!
- DKSprocket, on 02/24/2008, -2/+11Old maybe, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Chameleons do not blend based upon there surroundings. That is a total myth. Chameleons change colors for display purposes and moods.
KeepingChameleons.com- wrathchilde, on 02/24/2008, -1/+7OK, fine, so you are technically right. But, if you use octopus instead of chameleon as your reference, the level of understanding conveyed to the reader is "WTF?".
- superrad, on 02/24/2008, -1/+11So it's best to play ignorance to the masses?
- Durrok, on 02/25/2008, -0/+3Well, since it's an election year, yes.

- michaelGregoire, on 02/24/2008, -9/+5Lame. I'd much prefer to see the original framing of these shots, but the idiots at the daily mail decided to crop all of the shots. From what I see here, the photos are average at best, but with the addition of a gimmick.
- sgoogle, on 02/24/2008, -0/+1They appear the same on her official website

- MarsSentinel, on 02/24/2008, -0/+4How to combat the Surveillance Society: wear plain-white Tyvek suits (the kind painters wear) over your clothes whenever you go out. Then when you get inside you can take it off ball/fold it up and it fits in a small pouch. If everyone did it no one would ever be under surveillance.
Plan B: REALLY generic clothing and glasses/hats.
You can become invisible without elaborate painting or technology. Just be generic and boring and they can't track you.
Oh, and use cash.- Frostek, on 02/24/2008, -0/+2Chavs are already following Plan B to great effect, wearing virtually identical crappy track suits, gloves, baseball caps and hoods at all times.
I'm sure they have never read 1984 though - they just don't want to be identified after they mug people. :-(

- loquax, on 02/24/2008, -0/+2She should look at trying to do one or two of these as statues in front of the installation. You could have the viewers walk around after viewing it from the front. Cool effect.

- mingolfins, on 02/24/2008, -1/+2God forbid anyone should do something which actually requires some talent eh? Photoshop is an amazing program, the difference between doing this in Photoshop and real life is talent.
- xkingADROCKx, on 02/24/2008, -0/+1Old, but good
- diggydougie, on 02/24/2008, -0/+6Let's see a video of them walking around. And maybe from different angles. Not so much then. I'll bet it would look strange to see someone in a bookshelf outfit walk up to the bookshelf and just merge into it.
