Art? Science? Who Cares! This is AMAZING!!! watch!
youtube.com — While most visual artists prefer traditional materials such as oil, acrylic, bronze and ceramic, Tokyo-based SACHIKO KODAMA prefers FERROFLUIDS. Composed of magnetic nanoparticles, ferrofluids often contain high levels of iron and, as such, are deeply affected by and responsive to the presence of magnetic fields. While the NASA-developed...

http://chemistry.about.com/od/demonstrationsexperi ...
The video I had on youtube has been removed :
But I remember it dating back to 2001.
Basically this brings me back to a discussion I have alot about how Nerds are more of an artist then half the "artists" out there. Sounds messy, but heres a perfect example.
Erwin Redl, in 2006 did an LED installment, (which was stunning by the way) but none the less, nothing I haven't seen done by any student in engineer school. It was just a matrix of leds on a wall, and thats it. Now like I said, it was amazing, but done before. And by done before i mean, done by nerds in the most amazing ways...you see, if a nerd were to put a matrix of leds on a wall, he would make it interact with the person walking past it, so to say if i were to walk up to the array of leds, they would change colors as I got closer, by using various censors. Erwin Redl, simply just lit them. For so long ive seen artists take a creation by a nerd, simply modify it, then call it "art" instead of a "project"
And this liquid is another prime example. This procedure is carried out by TONS of scientists, just none of them put it in a gallery.
- fudged71, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1citation needed
- EnjoyTheFact, on 08/08/2008, -13/+1I don't get "art people".

- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Reminds me of the scene in Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay where the dick DHS agent is questioning their parents. He's using an interpreter to speak to Harold's Korean parents; however, they already understand and speak perfect English.
/INB4: That's a stupid movie...it's pretty good if you're drunk/high, although not nearly as good as the first one. - tells, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2She should have just spoken in japanese and had someone translate with subtitles instead of saying lines like "so, the morpho tower is good".
- SheikYabooty, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Doesn't surprise me. Its probably directed at a US audience. Whenever I go to the States my friends have to translate what I'm saying some of the time because people can't understand a word I'm saying.... and I'm Australian! - allengeer, on 08/08/2008, -5/+3wait so her piece is a magnet and ferroliquid? not really all that creative I would think. I guess framing ferrofluid as "art" maybe. But I mean shes not doing anything. Inducing a magnetic field in ferrofluid makes cool designs always. You don't have to be all that talented.
"I don't think audiences in America have seen. . ." pretty much every chem/physics class has a ferrofluid demonstration.- UntoldGood, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2I have seen this in person. It is NOT just 'a magnet and ferroliquid'. That is like saying a Picasso is just paint and canvas or a Duchamp just trash and a pedestal. It is the way the ferroliquid moves over the form. There is a lot to it. There are other videos on YouTube of 'a magnet and ferroliquid' and it is not At All as cool as this.
Think of it as a moving sculpture, and enjoy. - teamgwho, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1You say "But I mean shes not doing anything." then you say " Inducing a magnetic field in ferrofluid makes cool designs alway"
So pick a position. Either she did something cool or she didn't.
Different types of structure (in this case a track that goes down spirally) and the surface area (I believe there were bumps here and there) will produce different effects, as ill changing the level of magnetism produced. So because of HOW she put it all together, that's why THIS particular effect was created. Let's see you do it. - Terrk, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Wait, so it's just some paint and a brush? Hell, everyone has seen that! /s

- feignNU, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2err...yeah, iron filings in water aren't quite gonna do the trick. Check out this site though: http://www.teachersource.com/ElectricityAndMagneti ...
They have bulk ferrofluid for sale for 150 dollars a liter, as well as some ferrofluid demo kits you can buy to get the hang of using it. It would be a sweet project and it doesn't look like it's even all that pricey or hard. Sweet!
- AGONYTUESDAY, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1buy iron filings, buy water, dissolve, buy electromagnets, get a bowl, have fun. it isnt that complicated.

- crazy0, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1maybe umm because he can relate?
- Mpwns, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1yes i can relate, i did salvia while i was on acid and it kinda looked like that but not in that way but very close since i was outside it was more brightly colored like gold, i guess it was the sun making everything look golden but it was a trip and even bigger trip to see someone make art out of it. after you do shrooms or acid, you never look at art the same way anymore.Picasso's work just screams i did a lot of drugs. and after my acid trip was done i felt like i had to do something creative with my life so now I'm messing around with music a lot and must say the acid was right i never had so much fun mixing records all day long.
