- FI5HERMAN, on 03/18/2009, -0/+11Make em all walk the plank !!!
- Haoie, on 03/18/2009, -0/+9There's actually a very long and interesting history in piracy. Could be fun.
- jbroderick, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7How do you know if your a pirate?
You just ARRRRRRRRRRRR! - Persian5Life, on 03/18/2009, -1/+7i would rather take star craft at the university of Berkly.
- Jereso, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5They better take at least a week appreciating Captain Dan & The Scurvy Crew.
Seriously, I never liked rap or hip hop, but this is just awesome.
Here, listen to "It's All About the Booty", (NSFW of course)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t_ahSIV11s - lainiejade, on 03/18/2009, -1/+5I'd so take that class!
- jer2eydevil88, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4Can Brokep come and be a guest speaker?
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4I thought people went to U of C for their athletic programs
- amheidt, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4That's great! I had Dawdy as a professor for one of my core classes, and she's definitely qualified to teach the class. Come to think of it, we learned a great deal about pirates in my class.
It's not going to be as awesome as most people think. It seems like a legit anthro class and I'm quite surprised no one has thought about teaching pirates before, as they had quite an influence over the Caribbean in colonial days. - Wilarseny, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3lol i have friends taking that class next term...
- ruforealz, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3This can only disappoint. I took a dinosaurs class and Jurassic Park never was even mentioned
- shepstl, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3I went to Missouri State University and took History of Piracy in the Americas. Great class. That's why i loved being a history major. We always had cool classes to choose from.
- spartarising, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3I had a Pirates in the Ancient World class when I attended the University of Illinois like 4 years ago.
- HesComing, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3Hey I'm an RA at the U of C and a lot of people here talked about it when the courses for next quarter were released. No one I talked to was actually requesting it though, unless they just didn't want to admit it because it doesn't sound very "academic."
- Vosona, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3File-sharing degenerates at sea.
- DocOrpheus, on 03/19/2009, -2/+4What did the Pirate have to say about the Book of Revelation?
"It's ARRRRRRRRmageddon!" - colinmhayes, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2I'd take that class if UC had not rejected my application within 3 weeks of me submitting it. damn GRE snobs.
- ccbbb23, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Aaarrrrrrr-ready being done.
Some other Universities have aaarrrr-ffered history classes. As my matie Haoie states, there is an very long and interesting history in piracy. The University of Houston has such a history course.
And, our favorite author, Stephenson, introduced a bit of the history in his Baroque Cycle.

c - mycoplasma, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Yarr, this be a mighty fine time for me to be gettin' that BS!
- maz2331, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2File-sharing, or degenerates at sea?
- Izz1011, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2You're criticizing U of C for not being serious enough?
I guarantee you that class will be no fun and will be entirely miserable. That's just how they roll. - jzbass25, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2When I was applying to MIT I saw that a minor was Pirating haha
- danielewing, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2damn that means i got to change my major!!! oh wait i don't to go to college i guess i will just pirate the presentation.
- ccbbb23, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2That's what is amazing about the topic. Caribbean pirates get a lot of press, but there was much pirate activity in the Pacific, Indian, and between waters.
And we can't forget about Blackbeard. His area of influence was, I think, Virginia and North Carolina.
Arrrrrrrrr-chetypal pirate - Guitarzan, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2We have a Harry Potter class at Cal State Univ Fullerton, this is kind of like that ... right?
- Gr00ver, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2AAAARRRRRRRRR..
- Haz3rd, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2If the teacher doesn't have an eye patch, peg leg, or a parrot on their shoulder, or anywhere in the room really, I'd drop the class.
- Philbert, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I've seen History Channel specials on pirates, there was a big one last summer I think. There's some pretty interesting stuff that went down and actually far fewer pirates than you'd think. Sadly modern day pirates aren't as fun to make up stories about. They pretty much just shoot you, steal your boat, end of story. If you're lucky you get taken hostage, but hat's pretty unlikely.
On second thought, maybe it's about these guys:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsJyfN0ICU - crapiolio, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1There is one that's pretty close to what you just described: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Sally
He will prob be a guest speaker. - johndatserakis, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I would definitely pay attention in this class.
- Haz3rd, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Logged in just to Digg you up.
- copperhead1288, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1So it's a class on the various definitions of the word "pirate"? I love it. You can apply that concept to everything, like splitting a curriculum between empirical rulers and math-class ones, or between political chairs and kitchen ones. Wow, that'd be totally.... something.
- Jereso, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1:D
- killthejill, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I was actually upset when I found out what this article was really about...
- RagManX, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1What if the teacher instead runs a bittorrent search site?
- sillymeganlee, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1I'd rather take Zombies at Columbia.
http://www2.colum.edu/course_descriptions/52-2725J ... - RagManX, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1The only pirate that really matters these days is that one on SpongeBob.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Education != entertainment. If you knew anything about the University of Chicago then you'd know it has one of the most rigorous academic programs in the nation with it's post grad departments consistently coming out in the top 3 (Business), top 8 (law), and credited with more nobel laureates than any other institution.
The article makes the class seem like fluff, but I can guarantee you that the Anthropology department is going to examine the socio-economic, cultural constructs, et al that led to "pirating."
Also, if you read the article you'd realize that they are going over modern day pirating like Madoff and copyright infringement. Your polar ***** politcial views don't make for pirating claims. Now stfu - PSHQuilts, on 03/20/2009, -0/+0Garrr..Where be the the ocean? They'll have to walk yon plank if they ferget their thesis paper.
- scarlettletter, on 03/20/2009, -0/+0If this is a class where we can dress up and play pirates I'm all for it! I just don't want to be the one to walk the plank.
- GabbyGobstopper, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0I'd be iffy to take this class. I'd be scared that everyone was after me boooty! Arg :D
- Malinse, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0I'm just asking, Why? The whole idea seems absurd to me. I guess I'm from another time. I mean look at this culture's idea of television. Watching people drunk on dates, watching families with eight kids because the woman took fertility drugs. My life is reality, I don't need to stare at a box and voyeur other peoples reality. I don't understand how that's entertaining.
- fredsgonemad, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0I would so love to have BA (Hons) Anthropology and Pirate Mythology on my CV
- emstoehr, on 03/19/2009, -0/+0I'm in it next quarter. Pretty excited.
- Malinse, on 03/19/2009, -3/+0I rest my case on the demise of college and the dumbing down of the youth in this country. They glamorize the lawless murderers. Why not teach them about the pirates in our own backyard. Pelosi pillaging our future. And President Obama shanghaiing the economy. What's next, a course on batman? What a pitiful waste of minds.
