What Irving has said is that there is no evidence that Hitler knew of the final solution nor that auchwitz had gas chambers or that jews were being systematically killed. There's no numbers to it, Irving was a holocaust denier, certainly not "the most respected historian on ww2 documents".
Presenting evidence did not ruin his reputation, he had no credible evidence nor is there credible evidence anywhere that claims that the nazi's were not systematically killing jews.
Irving lost a Libel suit when he claimed that he was not a holocaust denier, the judge ruled against him saying, "Irving has for his own ideological reasons persistently and deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence; that for the same reasons he has portrayed Hitler in an unwarrantedly favourable light, principally in relation to his attitude towards and responsibility for the treatment of the Jews; that he is an active Holocaust denier; that he is anti-Semitic and racist, and that he associates with right-wing extremists who promote neo-Nazism."

- johnnyboy239, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2While I think that it is a god-awful, hurtful, dangerous, and stupid thing to say I do think that people should have the right to say it. However, that was not what we were talking about, we were talking about whether or not he should be respected as a historian.
I think you may have misinterpreted what I Meant when I said he lost a libel suit. I meant that he sued someone else for libel (essentially written defamation) when they said that he was a holocaust denier, he lost that suit and all furhter appeals because all evidence pointed to it being true.
