Amazing Wooden Mirrors Are Throwback To Medieval Times (pic)
environmentalgraffiti.com — Mirror, mirror, on the wall … what if you were made of wood? Interactive artist, Danny Rozen, has done just this, creating a mirror out of 830 wood blocks - but would you put one on your wall?

- The0, on 08/07/2008, -3/+366That's odd, in my history classes about medieval times I don't ever remember reading about:
a) tiny cameras that gather light and shape data, send it to computers that process it, and use hundreds of tiny electric motors to shift wood blocks into the image in front of the device,
or
b) the reflective properties of wood.
But hey, maybe my books are outdated.- unAntimatter, on 08/08/2008, -32/+4American Inner-City Public School?
Your lucky to have a chair to sit in during class, that is, if you even attend class.- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4Where the ***** did that comment come from?
Wow, what a douche. - emt1451, on 08/08/2008, -1/+6*You're
- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4Where the ***** did that comment come from?
- rz8472, on 08/08/2008, -0/+12I want my soul back!
- Asvetic, on 08/08/2008, -1/+35I love it when the first comment is the most profound. It gives me that succinct feeling.
- kinggimped, on 08/08/2008, -6/+1Yeah. It's a throwback. They're not saying it has survived from medieval times, they're just saying that the effect created is kinda reminiscent of what we would now consider 'medieval'.
This mirror thing does kinda scare me ***** though. - pjpark, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2What about that thing sticking out of that lady's pants? I think that might be medieval.
- MattDell, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3And what are witches made out of?
- WeaponAlpha, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1It's in the new Edition
.... and they changed the numbers on the questions, so you MUST buy it. - coyote1284, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2The mirror is made out of midieval witches, which we all know weighed the same as a duck because they were made out of wood.
- unAntimatter, on 08/08/2008, -32/+4American Inner-City Public School?
- Kyan, on 08/07/2008, -36/+97Stupid. And nothing to do with the middle ages.
- unAntimatter, on 08/08/2008, -1/+20Stupid? I'd say it took quite a bit of intelligence to properly calibrate the blocks to actually mimic what the camera senses...
Humdrum, maybe, but stupid this is not.- Kyan, on 08/08/2008, -12/+5Not sure about intelligence. Patience, yes.
But I'll stick with labelling it stupid for now. If it was cool to look at, maybe I'd give it another chance.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, FWIW.
- Kyan, on 08/08/2008, -12/+5Not sure about intelligence. Patience, yes.
- zip000, on 08/08/2008, -0/+12I think that it is awfully neat, but I agree it has nothing to do with the middle ages.
- unAntimatter, on 08/08/2008, -1/+20Stupid? I'd say it took quite a bit of intelligence to properly calibrate the blocks to actually mimic what the camera senses...
- MattFromSeattle, on 08/07/2008, -9/+18Isn't this a dupe? I swear I saw this article last year?
- wonderbriefs, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5I don't know if I found it on digg but this has been around for a couple years.
- psion01, on 08/08/2008, -1/+16No ... this is just a reflection of that article.
- MattFromSeattle, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Well played.
- tarm, on 08/08/2008, -3/+4Well guess what, I swear I'VE never seen it before so how 'bout you shut the ***** up?
Thanks- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Be realistic:
Just because you haven't seen it before doesn't mean it's not "old news."
Being that Digg is a social news site...I'll grant you pass that "the masses" are digging this up. It hits front page, fair enough.
But don't digg someone down for stating the truth: this is not new, therefore is not news, despite your relatively small exposure, or ignorance, to pre-existing tech news.
- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Be realistic:
- Triterion, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2My Professor played us a freggin VHS of this wooden mirror back in 2002. Talk about old!
- taketheleap, on 08/07/2008, -3/+114ok, medieval times = no, thats just stupid: read the article before you post it. it's done with cameras and computers. I doubt Charlemagne had a computer...
But nonetheless, this is pretty effin cool.- DforSpiD, on 08/08/2008, -2/+2Isn't the reference to medieval times to do with the style, as opposed to the technology?
- Myztry, on 08/08/2008, -0/+6If it was the style, it would be greek or roman mosaic.
Wood on the other hand, isn't just a medival material.
We had the stone, bronze, iron, etc ages but the wood age???
Rumor has it that it's still in common use to this very day. - kelway, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I think the medieval reference was to the Snow White "Mirror, Mirror on the wall" line... Snow White was supposedly patterned after Margarete von Waldeck (1533-1554).
- eyefork2, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2I've got wood.
- DforSpiD, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1the style of the picture, not the fact that it's wood...
Do I really have to spell everything out for you?
It was also just a possibility of what the submitter may have thought, not saying whether it's right or wrong...
- Myztry, on 08/08/2008, -0/+6If it was the style, it would be greek or roman mosaic.
- feliks2, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Charlemagne WAS a computer. And, by the way, stylistically this has nothing to do with medieval times either.
- conan359, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Maybe they meant Medieval Times like the themed restaurant.
see www.medievaltimes.com - Zanier87, on 08/08/2008, -0/+0The artwork is similar to that of Icons (mosaics), which was a type of artwork done during the height of the Byzantine Empire (a.k.a. Medieval Greece)
- DforSpiD, on 08/08/2008, -2/+2Isn't the reference to medieval times to do with the style, as opposed to the technology?
- juliohm, on 08/07/2008, -3/+60It's just a crappy monitor!
- Murdats, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3exactly, I was thinking this is just some screen someone has made out of wood.
impressive but not a mirror. - Myztry, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5Anyone else spot the dead pixels. I'd be asking for a refund....
- Murdats, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3exactly, I was thinking this is just some screen someone has made out of wood.
- ObeseSnake, on 08/07/2008, -1/+12Yeah weird Medieval Times reference. I wasn't sure if the poster thought since wood was involved or if maybe it had to do with the dinner theater place where the wenches serve food.
Either way...Wired magazine had an article on this art project years ago. - ivan423, on 08/08/2008, -5/+11I am sure the Medieval Times reference was only a joke by the submitter. Joke or not, it still is a cool submission.
- HiroOfShadows, on 08/08/2008, -7/+10That has got to be the coolest thing ever.
- jojopumpkin, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1At least its not this
http://digg.com/gadgets/Beamz_Infomercial_Is_Most_ ...- HiroOfShadows, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Good god I remember that.
*****'s worse than Wii Music.
- HiroOfShadows, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Good god I remember that.
- formfactor, on 08/08/2008, -2/+0Your joking right?
I mean in the age of iphones, superfast electric cars, and mars rovers, a fugly, impractical wooden mirror ranks very low on my coolness scale.- PokerGigolo, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3You're a perfect example of what electronic media has done to our youth. The iPhones, electric cars, and mars rovers are all marketed to you by large corporations - yes, NASA is indeed a large corporation with a huge marketing and public relations staff - because they're going to need your money at some point, whether it's in the form of direct sales dollars, or tax dollars.
You grew up on it, it's not your fault, but you've been trained to not be able to measure on your own the relative coolness of a given object. You just don't know how. You need a corporation to tell you, and if it's not coming from someone that wants your money, it can't possibly be cool.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently wrong with you, you just need to recognize that your coolness scale has been cleverly defined for you while still making you feel like a rebel. You've been well played.

- rwood757, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2I'm loving the art installations storys on digg tonight
- infiniphunk, on 08/08/2008, -2/+3DO WANT!!
- joshcxa, on 08/08/2008, -2/+8ARG vid scared me at the end...it was loud :(
Awesome mirror btw - samard2002, on 08/08/2008, -4/+34This is bar none the stupidest headline I have ever seen on Digg. Does the poster really believe they had wooden mirrors in Medieval Times? I am laughing too hard to type right now.
At least it beats the prehistoric times, when they had mirrors made out of rocks and animal bones.- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1Not that I've tested it, but a very deep Ebony wood with a very smooth polish could have a very nice reflective property.
Now, it would not be like a true mirror; however, you could construct one using truly "medieval" methods, technologies, and equipment.
- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -2/+1Not that I've tested it, but a very deep Ebony wood with a very smooth polish could have a very nice reflective property.
- IG64, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4Looks like that big face thing from the last Matrix
- jaredcat, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2There is only one Matrix movie...
- dhVyse, on 08/08/2008, -3/+4While very cool, I don't see how that has anything to do with Medieval Times.
- cyberdash, on 08/08/2008, -4/+81I wood buy one.
- teh_techie, on 08/08/2008, -3/+25Gee, you're a chip off the ole' block!
- rbross2005, on 08/08/2008, -7/+1Oh you! It's great how entertained I am by mirror puns!
- T440, on 08/08/2008, -4/+18Wow, all of these clever jokes about wood must make you guys poplar with the ladies.
- teh_techie, on 08/08/2008, -1/+16With all these jokes, you'll never get board!
Try and come up with a few more... I'm stumped! - Pushkin, on 08/08/2008, -1/+10Yew are?

- SiXiam, on 08/08/2008, -1/+8Advanced technology does resemble magic...
- rz8472, on 08/08/2008, -2/+2you mean DOST resemble magic. How durst ye use ye devil tongue on this goodly commune!
- Lythium, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2I thought it would be "doth"... And "durst" is actually the past tense. Also your spelling is too modern, and perhaps "thou" and "thy" would be more appropriate for the period than "ye." (Don't hate me; hate my degree in lit.)
- rz8472, on 08/08/2008, -2/+2you mean DOST resemble magic. How durst ye use ye devil tongue on this goodly commune!

Although it does link to some other Rozin videos, which are just as cool.

- Fracture98, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Its bark was worse that its byte.
- felidaeus, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3omg, that woman in the first picture has a....
and she's...
I need to go wash my eyes with boiling water - theysayjump, on 08/08/2008, -4/+12Here's a mirror just in case (not a RickRoll): http://tinyurl.com/2q575e
- Luke1h7, on 08/08/2008, -5/+1Well they probably polished wood back in medieval times for mirrors. This is a new tech spin on old school mirrors. Maybe. I'm guessing. What I do know is I would definitely put one of those in my house. That's ***** sweet.
- barnett25, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1They polished metal to make mirrors in medieval times, not wood.
- otto989, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2now THAT is freaking cool
- clynxx, on 08/08/2008, -9/+2***** you, two of my friends died looking at wooden mirrors.
- teh_techie, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Your only friend IS the wooden mirror...
- arjie, on 08/08/2008, -2/+2That'd work better if all those people depicted didn't have such a wooden expression.
- RandomFruitBat, on 08/08/2008, -1/+0I want to see my wood on the wood.
- MtheoryX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1I want to see this pseudo-meme die, along with all you dumb asses that keep trying, unsuccessfully, to use it.
- Diganta, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2I saw this demonstrated in Siggraph in 2000 or 2002.
Even though the image is pixelated the wood blocks give an organic and soft quality of this mirror or display. - bryceman111, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1
- dvsbastard, on 08/08/2008, -2/+15Does anyone have a working mirror?!
/double enterndre- Kenzan, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4Kenzan sees what you did there.
- dvsbastard, on 08/08/2008, -0/+7It double "entendre" you idiot...
/schizophrenia- T440, on 08/08/2008, -0/+11You two must have teretts.....wait...what the hell?
- cl2yp71c, on 08/08/2008, -0/+6I can just imagine using it for shaving.
"someone.....call 911" - Kenzan, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Imagine if you had this connected to your TV.
Then imagine watching Pink Floyd's "The Wall" on it.
Now imagine you are watching it while you just dropped 5 tabs of Acid. - Dylson, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Thats not my reflection, friend.
- frepnog, on 08/08/2008, -2/+0I'm not your friend, buddy.
- FoxOrian, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2The sound it makes is something I'd love to experience in person. It almost sounds relaxing to me for some reason, like a white noise or rain.
Also, the explosion of sound at the end of the video scared me. - Cerebron, on 08/08/2008, -0/+17Looks like something from Myst.
- AdamWest2122, on 08/08/2008, -0/+8Whoever voted you down obviously didn't do so well on Myst island, thank you for perfectly reflecting my thoughts when I looked at it.
- bbqsalad, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3The keyboard in the spaceship was always a bitch.
- Trax91, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Anybody felt like hooking this thing up to a computer?
- RandomFruitBat, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2What? I can't read your comment through all this wood!
- mrmayor92, on 08/08/2008, -3/+2mirror?
- WoollyMittens, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Damn, you beat me to it :)
- Fockzhound, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2True, not a mirror at all if we want to get technical as it produces non mirror images, i.e writing would not be mirrored etc. More like a pixelated wooden monitor. Sheesh.
- virtualonliner, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Man, that is one lousy mirror. ***** thing isn't even clear!
- WoollyMittens, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1Mirror please!
- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2These things are awesome, I want one.
- Fockzhound, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2True, not a mirror at all, more like a giant pixelated wooden monitor. Plus, no mirroring of images, just 1:1. Sheesh.
- CrushThemTorg, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2This is really cool*.
* Last year. When I first saw it. - teh_techie, on 08/08/2008, -3/+1... my bite is worse than my bark
- zadadka, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Made me think of Stephen Donaldson's Mordant books...
- bobbknight, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Calling a computerized motor driven video mosaic monitor a mirror is just not correct.
- coreychauk, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Reminds me of that Fujiya Miyagi video with the dominos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5XVeENmLMk - i11uminati, on 08/08/2008, -0/+11Medieval times? What an idiot. Everyone knows these are Amish mirrors.
- MasterThief117, on 08/08/2008, -4/+1How much wood can a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck would?
- Cowicide, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2Is this one of those so old it's new things? I remember checking this out many years ago. Still, it is (er, was) very cool.
- spilk, on 08/08/2008, -1/+0saw one of these at the Atlanta History Center last year.
- Joffroi, on 08/08/2008, -1/+1There is one of those in Sprint's World Campus in Kansas... its really cool
