having 0 ads is not necessarily good either. I dont even know what movies are out right now, or what cool products I could be missing. Ooh well.
- Remccs, on 01/23/2008, -9/+144so is it an ad? if so i want three
- Eluchil, on 01/23/2008, -29/+1No, that's the point. It's a billboard that isn't trying to open your wallet and get you to buy something. I like it.

- Zipko, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2There was an invisible /s you missed. Might want to get these cool glasses everyone else has that lets us see it. Coincidently, the specs also let you see the rest of that ad. I already own two.

- typicalusername, on 01/23/2008, -18/+2Amen, Brother! They could have at least put an interesting tag on it, rather than looking like it was just dr'd in MS Paint.
- leftyslament, on 01/23/2008, -0/+14This pic does not do the piece justice. This is a still of video of a performance art piece by the guerilla artist Banksy. He spray painted this in broad daylight in front of many people. *That* was the art piece, not what appears on the wall. Of course it's sloppy, that isn't the point. It was how and why he did it that make it interesting.
- Garbagio, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Lefty got it dead on there. When you think about the fact that it has made an impact on people who don't even know who Banksy is: It's gotta tell ya that he knows how to get his message across damn well.
- MRintheKeys, on 01/23/2008, -8/+1Maybe they could have painted some kind of uplifiting mural or perhaps just left it blank.
- heypetray, on 01/23/2008, -0/+4It would have been an amazing mural. Very uplifting and inspirational. The next day it would be molested by the new McD's ad campaign or a dancing silhouette.

- lewikee, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1Banksy as our narrator...not bad!
- TehSwat, on 01/23/2008, -10/+37Banksy is a fantastic artist, top notch stuff.
http://www.banksy.co.uk/menu.html- N00F, on 01/23/2008, -8/+11I don't know what to think of Banksy's works. While I agree he is a very good artist, is it right that he is spraying grafitti? I have seen other grafitti, both good and bad, but it is still paint, laid in a place that wasn't asked for. I am, myself, a pretty good artist but that doesn't give me the right to deface public property, or subject people to my interpretation of art. I post my art on my personal webpage and people can choose to look at it or buy it.
- Tyrghast, on 01/23/2008, -2/+9Banksy is the master of irony and graffiti uses irony to reveal blatant problems in society
- leftyslament, on 01/23/2008, -0/+10I'm an artist as well, who happens to specialize in guerrilla art. While I don't support wanton destruction of private property, we live in a world where we are assaulted by tons of images against our will. It can range from ads to propaganda, but on a certain level it is all a form of brainwashing in that it imposes cultural values on us, and we don't necessarily have a say in the matter. Guerrilla art is one way of leveling the playing field. In a society where art has been supplanted with mindless entertainment, I feel it is the guerrilla artist's duty to take back our culture from the mass media conglomerates. This is kind of the point of the piece linked to above. Banksy is replacing ads with art, and there is nothing wrong with that.

- Le3f, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2I'm glad the attention Banksy gets keeps growing... hope it doesn't lead to people denouncing his work because it's "mainstream".

- ausfahrt, on 01/23/2008, -17/+16Nice pic but i for one am not completely annoyed by advertisements, even before a movie. I guess i can understand why people get upset but it doesn't bother me, and sometimes i think people just complain for the sake of complaining. And personally that sloppily spay painted sentence on the ugly blue background is less appealing than if it were a nice clean add with some nice colors and images.

Seen Idiocracy where their clothes are made out of adverts and the guy is paid to say "brought to you by Karl's Jr" at every sentence?
It just makes you think - where does it end?- ausfahrt, on 01/23/2008, -2/+8Where does what end though. My point is that they're waisting their breath. They can say Karl's Jr as often as they like it doesn't affect me, im not gonna go out and spend money at Karl's Jr or whatever. I agree with orangefly's point about the kids cause they might not know that it's just garbage and to tune it out, but you can teach them. I educate myself on my purchases so the adverts are a waste of time, and any tv that is spammed with it is probably not good tv anyways.

- Jade10145, on 01/23/2008, -0/+10I find a poignant statement more beautiful then an image that is designed to purely sell me something. For me, there is no beauty in art that was designed with no better intention then selling.
Art is allowed to be messy, if it has something to say. - ryan83189, on 01/23/2008, -0/+6When you go to a movie, show time at 8, the movie starts at 9 because of all of the adverts, previews not included.
- Le3f, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Then you watch the movie, full of product placement.... to the point where it feels like my eyeballs are being raped (à la GM's Transformers anyone?).
- bonk2k, on 01/23/2008, -1/+7The thing is, advertisers don't care about you. They aren't there to give you pretty pictures and witty slogans for your entertainment pleasure. Sure ads may be entertaining, but the bottom line is getting your dollar. Advertisement is pure insincerity used to get you to buy stuff. It's just nice to see some truth for a change.
- unpolloloco, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2so why do you listen to their messages?
- chaoswings, on 01/23/2008, -1/+2Ads don't bother me if it's on a billboard. However I get annoyed when I'm trying to read something in a magazine and it's got a huge ad distorting the text. Or those ads that follow you when you scroll down the page..that's what made me start to block them. They just go too far and it ruins it for the rest of the advertisers but there is nothing that can be done.

Freakquently Asked Questions.
Aren't street art auctions a bit lame?
I don't agree with auction houses selling street art - its undemocratic, it glorifies greed and I never see any of the money.
What's with all the gallery shows?
None of the print and painting exhibitions in proper art galleries are anything to do with me, it's all stuff they bought previously. I only ever mount shows in warehouses or war zones or places full of live animals (I'm aware the pictures don't stand up on their own).
Why haven't you done more new stuff recently?
Apparently because I'm too busy compiling lists of things I haven't done recently for my website. - sodade, on 01/23/2008, -5/+33***** obtrusive advertising. Billboard companies should have to pay an eyesore tax.

^another Banksy drawing - chrisxtine, on 01/23/2008, -3/+0I suppose its nice to not be sold anything sometimes, but think of it this way:
if advertisers did not sell, people would not be pursuaded to buy, and then sales would decrease. if sales decrease, companies decrease in revenue, which subsequently may lead to layoffs or lost jobs.
layoffs could potentially lead to companies' bankruptcy and then eventually things you buy would be more expensive! the more people buy, the less it costs for companies to manufacture products (economies of scale), which in turn, costs less for us to buy in the end.
so darnit, we need advertisements! - QuorumCall, on 01/23/2008, -2/+3Without advertising the free market ceases to exist
- joebonk, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2first the free market would have to exist. good bye human rights
- scubasteve377, on 01/23/2008, -2/+7Personally, I prefer the joy of not paying to visit free websites, listen to free radio, and watch free broadcast television. Digg would pretty much suck ass if I had to pay a fee every time I logged on.
But hey, that's just me. You guys keep on fighting the good fight. - GhostyBoy, on 01/23/2008, -1/+1Look out your window. Especially if you live in a big city. It's all product. Endless streets and buildings and cables and vehicles and people dressed up and accessorized. We live in an endless sea of product, an almost entirely commercial existence.
