well played sir. - senseilmno, on 01/16/2009, -28/+110france has quickly surrendered to the sculptor.......
- swrostmore, on 01/16/2009, -6/+81Hating the French is so 2004
- twiztidsinz, on 01/16/2009, -5/+51Secret Nazi Highway!!!
- vincentml, on 01/16/2009, -1/+45€373,000, really.
- mrbroli, on 01/16/2009, -1/+44Shoulda researched David Cerny before commissioning him to do the work... he's made a career out of being offensive.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -2/+43The more free-speech abounds - the funnier ***** gets.
- jupaneanu, on 01/16/2009, -2/+34Yeah, I heard about this, quite a lot of controversy around it. Bulgaria was a Turkish Toilet and my country, Romania, a Dracula theme park
- Fib0112, on 01/16/2009, -2/+34Didn't Eddie Izzard say that if Europe was a car, then the UK wasn't in the car, it was standing outside and saying "we're going to wash your windows, ok?"
- MakanGuru, on 01/16/2009, -0/+26The piece should be named "How to piss off the whole of Europe", lol
- myFriendDerrik, on 01/17/2009, -5/+30Good art is offensive. Great art is illegal.
- Sidetrax, on 01/17/2009, -1/+25Actually it is.
"The United Kingdom, known for its Euroscepticism and relative isolation from the Continent, is "included" as missing piece (an empty space) at the top-left of the work" - lekahe, on 01/16/2009, -3/+26Finland is a mystery. It is made of wood which is OK, but then there is an elephant, a hippopotamus and a crocodile and a man on the ground with a shotgun.
This is even more confusing than placing polar bears here =0 - KarlH, on 01/16/2009, -2/+24The Swedish piece wasn't particularly offensive. More like spot on. A fighter plane that comes in an IKEA box for self-assembly. Of course, not many countries think of Sweden as a weapons exporter. Americans are more likely to associate it with the mythical "bikini team" or somesuch. Or maybe The Pirate Bay these days. That would have been a cool sculpture.
- KarlH, on 01/16/2009, -3/+24It's not a mystery. That refers to the stereotypical Finnish tradition of getting drunk and imagining seeing various exotic animals walk by outside. Like lions or kangaroos.
- hatchetj, on 01/17/2009, -5/+25yes they are!
A stereotype is a simplified and/or standardized conception or image with specific meaning, often held in common by people about another group. -
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotype - NinjaGod, on 01/16/2009, -19/+39They aren't stereotypes if they are true.
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -6/+26 France could have been depicted as a burning car.
- Harrison88, on 01/16/2009, -4/+20You do spell colour with a u. It's called English...
- jkroge, on 01/16/2009, -2/+17At first, I was wondering where I could find a higher resolution image, but then I realized that there are close-ups of the countries following the first picture in the slide show.
Usually when I see a slide show, I instinctively hit the back button and move on to something else. - Czaja, on 01/16/2009, -3/+18Recently in Poland, there has been a group of priests that encourage gays. They seceded from the Church due to the nature of their sexual orientation.
Overall, I think basing a country on a recent event is not a good stereotype. I though it was going to be a skinny French guy with a glass of wine, a fat German with beer, and a Polish guy drinking vodka. - Frodoholic, on 01/16/2009, -9/+24Very thought provoking piece. Maybe the countries should look at the image the world has of them instead of blaming the artist for representing it.
- jeexbit, on 01/16/2009, -1/+14"put together in such a way as to recall the infamous caricature depicting the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban."
i don't think i would have noticed that... - Fib0112, on 01/16/2009, -5/+18Riiiight. Because Romanians, for example, can do something to change how the rest of the world sees them. Or maybe Germany needs to be reminded again about WWII?
/s - inactive, on 01/16/2009, -3/+16Successful troll is successful.
- acegi, on 01/16/2009, -3/+15if i put them together, will they become a gundam?
- funkymonkey01, on 01/16/2009, -5/+17At least the UK wasn't on the pile of crap. And I don't mean the EU
- anders5689, on 01/16/2009, -4/+16From linked story:
"The Czech government commissioned the work in the belief that it would be completed by artists from the 27 EU member-states. That, at least, is what Czech artist David Cerny promised in his project application. Instead, Cerny made up the names of the European artists supposedly participating in the project and put it together with a couple of friends."
I officially love this artist. - KingGorilla, on 01/17/2009, -0/+12I know legos are expensive but really? that much?
- psilly, on 01/16/2009, -4/+15Touché
- spepin, on 01/16/2009, -1/+11I love it.
I work with a dude from Romania and another one from Bulgaria, they were both trying to explain this to me and it was funny BEFORE I saw the pictures, now I can see why they're pissed. - Gishman, on 01/17/2009, -0/+10What do you mean? The UK sculpture was the best one in regards with its role and attitude of the EU.
- moxley, on 01/16/2009, -9/+18This is art. It's doing EXACTLY what art is supposed to do.
If those in Prague who commissioned it aren't happy, then they should have made clear that they did not want real art, but a homogenized product; EG "pretend art." Remember, the French hated the Eiffel tower at first....I do think it was kind of ***** up that he purported to have a team of artists from throughout europe working on it - if it just wasn't possible then that's one thing, but if he was ***** from the beginning that's kinda uncool.
I think this is great. He should do the US states, he could have a ball - putting nooses and hanging trees in certain southern states juxtapsoed with something that shows how truly friendly and hospitable people in the south generally are....Of course people would be offended and wouldn't understand, but that is when art is msot successful - because it challenges your viewpoint and belief and makes the viewer think. - JCEEZ, on 01/16/2009, -1/+10I mean, its tough that Italy got a bunch of soccer dudes on it (pretty sweet) and Bulgaria got a toilet (pretty *****).....
- Ragzouken, on 01/16/2009, -10/+18Eh, 'color' isn't a word. Oh! You meant coloUr, it's so difficult to understand you inferiericans making your best attempt at speaking English.
- Cannonballkid, on 01/16/2009, -1/+9Spain and Italy are shown in positive lights yet Poland and Bulgaria are basically being ***** on here. I'm not taking favorites with how the countries are depicted but it seems that the artist has
- dzhastin, on 01/16/2009, -4/+12Of all the bureaucrats in Brussels, there's not one person responsible for monitoring these kinds of things? There's no Minister of Common Sense to say "Well, the Poles probably won't appreciate the priests hoisting a gay pride flag and the Bulgarians might be offended by their country being represented by a toilet."
- soulonfire928, on 01/16/2009, -1/+9I still can't really see it even though I know....
- harrisbradley, on 01/17/2009, -0/+7I love how he insinuated that Italy is a bunch of sissies...
- Harrison88, on 01/16/2009, -1/+8No. It's ENGLISH.
- drunkenvthokie, on 01/17/2009, -1/+8Yes, and Turkish Toilets SUCK!!! It's just a ceramic hole in the ground...
- inactive, on 01/17/2009, -1/+8 It wasn't ballsy. Ballsy would have been doing something intriguing that showed talent and forethought and would be appreciated for generations.
Shocking people to get your name mentioned by the press is not ballsy. - lukasmach, on 01/16/2009, -1/+8Cerny is fairly known in CR, I'd guess they expected some level of controversy - his previous art instalations include painting a Soviet tank pink:

And floating Hussein:

Additional commentary: http://motls.blogspot.com/2009/01/entropa-celebrat ... - clupean, on 01/17/2009, -0/+6I don't know about Italy, but Spain is not shown in positive lights.
A few months ago, the construction bubble collapsed and 300 000 workers (mostly immigrants) lost their jobs.
Many construction sites are now abandoned without finishing and look just like in the sculpture representing Spain. - angusware, on 01/16/2009, -2/+8Commas, can, only, be, use'd, in "specific, places;"!
- TheLITEsnack, on 01/17/2009, -1/+7Well Spain is depicted with a barren concrete landscape, while the Italians are humping and fellating soccer balls.
- inactive, on 01/16/2009, -2/+8Way to offend everyone in the EU.
- Heidenreich12, on 01/16/2009, -2/+8you gotta admit it was ballsy on his part. These days you can't get away with doing anything 'fun'.
- Echosphere, on 01/16/2009, -0/+6Well said. These aren't stereotypes, these are current mud in your eye media quotes done by an angst ridden teen.
- scarwars, on 01/17/2009, -0/+5actually a few thousand cars burned up two weeks ago..
