- inactive, on 04/10/2009, -5/+109Buddha specifically requested that nobody make an icon of him or worship him, that he was just a man and should be remembered as such. This was central to his teaching.
Human beings are so pitifully and unrelentingly stupid. - wreckosaurus, on 04/10/2009, -1/+54Isn't this contradictory to Buddha's teachings?
- madbadger, on 04/10/2009, -0/+52It's the Spring Temple Buddha in China, which is the tallest statue in the world at 420 ft (502 ft if you include the 82 ft building).

- GoKings, on 04/10/2009, -2/+34Eighteen million for that statue? Jesus... er... Buddha...
- GodAImighty, on 04/09/2009, -5/+29Damn it guys, wheres the enormous statue of me! Buddha rubs this in my face all the time.
- JKount, on 04/10/2009, -0/+24I really hope the end of the world involves these giant statues coming to life. Would love to see the team of Giant Buddha, Giant Jesus, and the Mt Rushmore quartet run rampant.
- zadadka, on 04/10/2009, -4/+23It was on Reddit yesterday?
Wow !
So what?
Does it really matter that much?
Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, etc....are all about sharing stuff we find interesting with peers, and we all have our preferences about where we look, or where we look first....and indeed, where we submit.
Comments like this are just so tawdry. - Bogo, on 04/09/2009, -13/+29http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Pharaoh_to_Remember
- dafragsta, on 04/10/2009, -0/+15... except Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the Vatican, and thousands upon thousands of Christian monuments. However, Buddha himself did say basically the same thing about holding his image as anything but a man and a teacher.
- Hodor, on 04/09/2009, -1/+13well, the title doesn't lie.
- PecanHead, on 04/10/2009, -0/+11Dr. Raymond Stantz: I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something that I loved from my childhood. Something that would never ever possibly destroy us. Mr. Stay-Puft.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Nice thinking, Ray. - protodon, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10He sure has slimmed down.
- KineticShampoo, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11This is such a remarkable thing to see. You have to visit it sometime.
- flashingcurser, on 04/10/2009, -0/+10The answer is complicated. If it is mere idol worship - yes it would be very contradictory. If it is a way for the builder to define himself - yes. If it is a way for the visitors to define themselves - yes. If it is a giant reminder to study and become wise, to live within Buddhist Dharma - no that would be fine. If it is beacon, a gathering place for Buddhists to share wisdom and knowledge - cool. If it is a tool to reach out to curious others who want to learn - that's great too. If someone was going to make a giant statue anyway and was debating what to make, Siddhārtha Gautama is as good as any.
- enkideridu, on 05/15/2009, -0/+9that list is dominated by Buddhist statues..
- nealparr, on 04/10/2009, -2/+10This Buddha statue and the one of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil should duke it out in Godzilla versus Megalon style!
- InfiniteNothing, on 04/10/2009, -0/+8I never took Buhdism as a "thou shalt not" kind of religion. No one's going to hell for building this statue.

- haikuFU, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6Yes. And technically, Buddhists are atheists (with the exception of a couple of sects). Buddhism is a way of life/moral code.
- moofree, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6Keep it at 420 feet. A hempseed a day...
- flashingcurser, on 04/10/2009, -0/+6Though because they're both pacifists it wouldn't be nearly as entertaining as Godzilla vs. Megalon. With Buddha accepting Jesus's path as valid and Jesus turning the other cheek the Japanese film crews would get board. They'd go home, nothing to see here.
- soelinn, on 04/10/2009, -0/+5You are confusing that "Rub my belly" buddha (aka Laughing Buddha) with the actual Buddha (Siddhattha).
Laughing Buddha is based on an eccentric Chinese Ch'an (Zen) monk who lived over 1,000 years ago and has become a significant part of Buddhist and Shinto culture. - Atario, on 04/10/2009, -0/+5I much prefer this form of stupidity over the form where the response to that request is to ban all depictions of the human form on pain of death.

- thyagobr, on 04/10/2009, -1/+4Well, I don't use Reddit.
So thanks for posting it here too. - InfiniteNothing, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4I don't think prohibit is the right word. It's more like you shouldn't do things that might corrupt you.
- dengzhi, on 04/10/2009, -1/+4Chinese can make anything. China is the world's factory.
- TigerStar337, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3It is big.
- seanstuart, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Is that for real? What is it made of? And, are 100-story tall phallic symbols consistent with the teachings of Buddhism?
- jaschen, on 04/10/2009, -3/+6I been there...its ALOT of walking.
- raypricestandup, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Surely you're not saying
we have the resources
to save the poor from their lot?
There will be poor always

look at the good things you've got. - Zaeboes, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3I give up. What word were you trying to bleep out? It's much too long to be the obvious choice.
- Praystation, on 04/10/2009, -4/+7As a buddhist...I feel that this is an unneccesary waste of resources, time and money which could have otherwise been used to help the underpriviledged and the needy.
- Nightlurker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Thats of Jesus isn't it? Not God. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- JekJob, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3"Maybe it's TOO big?"
- Kaegro, on 04/10/2009, -3/+6Some one placed a HUGE FLOATING CLOCK next to it so people would realize how much time they've been staring at it.
Nothing wrong with that, I meant its a HUGE FREAKING CLOCK with a statue next to it. impressive stuff. - SilverBack101, on 04/10/2009, -0/+3Remember Me!! *shoots flames out of eyes*
- scamper22, on 04/10/2009, -3/+6Just what is the Western idolation of Bhuddism or Hinduism as if these are peaceful religions/spirtual ways of life while Christianity/Judaism is just barbaric. It's the same with Tibet. What is with people and 'free-tibet'. Tibet was essentially a theocracy with a less than peaceful past. It closed itself off to the world, excluding foreigners. Their biggest complaint today is China is diluting their closed culture by bringing more Chinese in. This is not to say Tibet does not deserve be its own country... but what the hell is this over-emphasis on it by western people.
Why don't you actually read some history for a chance and see the legacy of bhuddism in Asia. The Japanese imperialists were bhuddists... and you don't need to research far to see their atrocities.
You can look to other predominantly bhuddist countries like Burma to see how far they can fall.
Or the all time favorite right now.
The Hindu Tamil Tigers versus the Bhuddist Singalese who have been fighting for decades. Suicide bomibings.. check. Ethnic oppression... check. Yet, you think on Judaism and Islam could produce something like the Israeli Palestinian conflict.
Then you see these Chrstian evangelists on TV begging for money. Yes... god always needs money you know. Well try travelling to Thailand or elsewhere in Asia. Monks approach you on the street and they will 'bless' you for a fee of course.
My point here is not to say Hinduism or Bhuddism are 'bad'. It's just that they're not better than Christianity or Islam or Judaism. They ultimately produce the same political problems and results in violence as often. The reason of course is simple... religion just isn't that important in the grand scheme of things. Our primal instincts, our gang nature is far more powerful. What ever 'ism' you 'believe' in is not the cause of the violence. It is really the fact that you have an 'ism' itself. - BIGJOE1975, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2It'd be all the more impressive since the Mt. Rushmore quartet DON'T HAVE BODIES!! Run for your lives!!
- ron7852, on 04/10/2009, -0/+2My next bong rip will be dedicated to that 420 ft. Buddha statue
