6 Similarities Between Running Websites and Drug Addictions
randomtoplist.com — It was about 3am. I was hunched over my keyboard staring at my LCD screen. There was a foul odor in the air, most of which was emanating just from my person. Yet I was awake at this ungodly hour so that I could take care of various updates and other website maintenance. It was then that the following list started to form in my mind.
- 74 diggs
- digg it
- netneutrality, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Dugg because I'm addicted too. I once found myself checking the logs only to discover the last entry was 1 minute ago -- me, checking the logs.
- LewP, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Dugg, shouted, and submitted to the DDD all within 10 minutes. Am I a junkie?
- jen55, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3so nice to know I'm not the only one - the only thing that comes close is caffeine!
- bstory, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Hey - I resemble some of those points!
- Fangsinmybeard, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6It is the geek syndrome. When addictive personalities are exposed to a immediate gratification of successful computer interfacing, all other normal social skills are abandoned in favor of dedicating more energy toward computing. It is the latest psychological phenomena to be documented in human behavior. The next closest typical addictive behavior is gambling addiction.
- Modestexcuse, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1That sounds pretty solid to me. I now admit to having Geek Syndrome. Support groups?
- synystar, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4That pretty much covers the symptoms of every hobby or project I've ever taken on. I'm thinking it's just me - I must have an addictive personality because I can't seem to step away from whatever I'm obsessed with at the time. Months after I've moved on to something new I'll look back and think "I actually spent hour after hour, day after day doing that and now I can't understand why or whether I even accomplished anything worthwhile." Gaming, tinkering, designing, building, whatever...if I find it interesting enough it will probably consume me.
