- Hetman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+75Gulliotine is not a weapon. It is not used to attack nor defend an area. Greek fire did change the course of history. However It should not be in the top 5. The crossbow should be on the list. It was the first weapon to ever be banned by the vatican. "not that this stopped people from using it." Finally do we consider the V2 to be an actual weapon or a weapon delivery system. Because then planes and nuclear subs should probably be on the list. Since they did actually change the way wars are fought.
- novakaine, on 07/07/2009, -0/+51All right, everybody be cool, this is a robbery!
Any of you ***** pricks move, and I'll execute every ***** last one of ya...with my guillotine!!! - potamkin, on 07/07/2009, -0/+34Buried for lack of longbow. Research it
- Walwyn, on 07/07/2009, -0/+32No AK-47?
- MCA2142, on 07/07/2009, -1/+30The Guillotine isn't a weapon. It's a tool.
- JoshDelvin, on 07/07/2009, -2/+24What about the pen?
- smartnerd666, on 07/07/2009, -0/+19What about the good old sharp stick? maybe a heavy rock?
- doctechnical, on 07/07/2009, -1/+16Ditto on the crossbow, it pretty much put an end to the near invulnerability of a knight in plate mail. And cannon should be on the list, they pretty much made castles obsolete.
- kingmanic, on 07/07/2009, -1/+14The Guillotine isn't really a weapon. Greek fire didn't change anything at all. Fire had been used in warfare for a long time before. The V2, it's scientists and the program are the precursors to the American and Russian ICBM's and space program but the weapon itself was not that destructive.
Things left out
-Maxim gun/Machine gun: Changed the way war was fought. Technology > esprit de corps
-Recurved Bow+stirrups: The Mongols carved up most of Asia and parts of Europe with this simple combination
-Crossbow: The original democratizer of force. Longbows were better but required years of training. Crossbows were as effective as most early guns. May have helped unify china.
-Pike + phalanx: Won Alexander his wars and empire.
-Cannon: enabling longer ranged naval battles and key to control of the colonies of europe. - jake1337, on 07/07/2009, -0/+13I'll go with the penis mightier, Trebek!
- lobsterxcore, on 07/07/2009, -1/+14Is this where the rejected Cracked writers are employed?
- Hyphven, on 07/07/2009, -0/+12What about the bow and arrow?
- Animan351, on 07/07/2009, -0/+12Kinda expected the AK-47 to be on the list. It's been the Guerrilla's choice as well as most of tha warring worlds choice for a ridiculous amount of time and is the most well known auto in the world by far.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8Pffft. . . .No board with a nail in it. Buried.
- eastwood24, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8No kidding. What a great potential list that was so poorly thought out.
- borez, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8"We're counting down the seven days until France's Bastille Day on July 14"
Are we? - Fatcheeseguy, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8It fails to mention one important detail about Greek Fire, WATER ONLY MADE IT WORSE.
What about the first machine gun? the maxim machine gun, which eventually evolved into a more high tech gun.. It's not like it had any significant impact on WW1, which some argue led to WW2.. - novakaine, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7leur*
- doom777, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7We had nowhere near enough nuclear bombs to blow up half of solar system. Hell, we wouldn't even be able to blow up Earth, just damage the crust a little bit.
- MatzahMan, on 07/07/2009, -0/+7No Ak-47? this list is a failure
- Homerr, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6The tank got humanity beyond conflicts that had evolved into trench warfare once the machine gun was introduced.
- novakaine, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6I am pretty sure the compound bow was developed in the 60's.
Maybe you mean the recurve bow...unless the Chinese Olympic archery team conquered Asia and I didn't notice. - falconear, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Really. It's such a great weapon that our troops in Vietnam used to abandon their own M-16s and pick up the Ak-47. It's by far the greatest assault rifle in the world, but the U.S. will never adopt it because the commies came up with it.
- doctechnical, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5It depends on your definition of "better". On the firing range the ('nam era) M-16 will own the AK-47. But you schlep both of them through the jungles and the swamps and the mud and the blood and the beer, it's more likely the AK will be firing rounds than the M-16.
Well, pretty much ancient history anyhow. - DrDragun, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5How about the bronze spear or the bow+arrow versus stone age weapons? That sort of pre-history definitely shaped the starting positions of all the tribes for recorded history. This list is terrible.
- Threlly1, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5No Longbow.
Fail. - kingmanic, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Nunchucks are improvised mostly ineffective Japanese peasant weapons. Their prominence arose when Bruce Lee started using them. They aren't a terribly great weapon. They require expertise, they have relative short range, and they don't add that much mechanically to the force a person can exert.
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Their*
- banski, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Guillotines ready for action sir
- Hetman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5Yea and the napoleonic cannon was also a major change in warfare. It was one of the best anti-personal weapons to ever be created.
- tbrad223, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6No longbow?
- Lucas123, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4"A hot steak is better than a cold chop." (Curly, on why he would rather be burned at the stake instead of decapitated)
- STPZ, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4No landmines? You dont fool with that *****
- deathandtaverns, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4it's the reason we don't speak french
- GorfTron, on 07/07/2009, -2/+6I think the Bible should be on this list.
- DirtPile, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4No, the long-bow should be on the list.
- flashingcurser, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4Unless you intend to hug someone to death, your triceps, deltoids and pectoral muscles deal out damage.
- hozer, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4I think the crossbow was one of the biggest equalizers and it could penetrate armor and a peasant could take out a knight without much difficulty. It turned the whole world on its head.
- dippyskoodlez, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4AK was prolly one of the biggest ones to change current warfare.... ++
- MonkeyNews, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Fun Fact: In Britain we have an insult where you stick 2 fingers up at someone. Kinda like the middle finger insult but just add the forefinger.
This originated because way back England was a badass in warfare with longbow archers. France really hated these archers, so whenever they would capture an archer they would end his career by chop off the 2 fingers they used to pull back the bow.
In battle it was considered a taunt/insult to the French to wave these 2 fingers at them. - spammishking, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3forget the pen what about the arrow / sword / shield. I think all three changed warfare more than a V12 rocket
- MikeFromAmerica, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4...like a butcher's knife, or a harpoon, or an alligator.
- kingmanic, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3novakaine:
mp5 > .50 Desert Eagle
except for stopping a rampaging elephant or breaking your own wrist. - falconear, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3What about a banana? We haven't done bananas yet, have we?
- Wonderama, on 07/07/2009, -3/+6They failed to mention horse stirrups. They are a simple technological innovation developed around 800 A.D. that massively leveraged to use of calvary in battle.
- UnpossibIe, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3I was just about to post asking the same question.
- Hoxie, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3dugg for pulp fiction reference.
- Phaedryn, on 07/07/2009, -1/+4"It's by far the greatest assault rifle in the world, but the U.S. will never adopt it because the commies came up with it."
Uh...no - sleestakslayer, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3I'm pretty good with the bo staff.
