- kellfinder, on 09/07/2008, -0/+14Gorgeous pictures. I love the pics where the raindrops are captured falling in mid-air. Storm pictures always interest me too because I love a great thunderstorm.
- KMye, on 09/08/2008, -0/+8Using a photographer's image without his or her authorization on a for profit website is stealing, yes. As it would be on a not-for-profit site as well. Almost all of them are properly linked,
but these three:
http://pixdaus.com/single.php?id=52115
http://pixdaus.com/single.php?id=15042
http://pixdaus.com/single.php?id=26423
are from accounts whose owners are obviously stealing the images from others, and the final one in the series is linked through two different bookmarking sites to a naked jpg on a Russian site, with no credits anywhere along the way. - Jordan117, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5Reminds me of a cool word I learned recently: petrichor, the smell of rain on dry ground. It's an actual chemical secreted by plants when they get rained on, and one of the most pleasing and recognizable in the world. Chemists have tried distilling it for perfume and cologne, but it's simply too complex for that.
- AnnieInfinite, on 09/08/2008, -0/+5Just so beautiful! These pics have brightened my day.
- tubbylardman, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Typed rain into google image search... didnt see any those images.
- Aldanga, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4Now that is something I can digg.
- KMye, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4I'd say the "hdr" and "photomatix" in the tags would be good sign of that... ;)
If you're talking about the actual compositional elements...it all seems pretty fitting for a super wide angle shot... - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4Great photos!
- s0crates82, on 09/08/2008, -0/+4It hasn't rained in Los Angeles in a while. I miss the rain.
- arjie, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3How do they get that blue tint to the shots? Is it possible with a cheap digital camera (it has manual control)? I'd love a tutorial to learn how to do those.
That and those nature shots. How do they make all those colours show up? Mine tend to wash out in one direction. - tubbylardman, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Lol. Use the curves tool. Its for the pros.
- MisterOh, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3well for your first question, you''ll have to use photo editing software like adobe photoshop elements or picasa. Those are some good cheap/free ones. If you want to go all out, you can opt for the full photoshop. expect to pay lots.. or you can always hit up piratebay :-)
There's a few ways you can achieve the blue tint. I personally would use the Hue/Saturation adjustment with the colorize box ticked off in photoshop.
For your last question.. to make colors "pop" you'll have to up the color saturation. And for your colors washing out in one direction, have you played with the white balance settings in your camera? - KMye, on 09/08/2008, -1/+4At least three stolen photos in there...boo
- kickelephant, on 09/08/2008, -0/+3Showing an 'example' is stealing?
- VyRuZ, on 09/08/2008, -1/+3You could always invest in a DSLR. The difference is huge. My brother recently purchased a Nikon D60 with 18-55mm and 70-200mm lenses. Compared to anything that takes pictures, it's in a different category!
- laserterd, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2disclaimer: pictures inspire.
- arjie, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Thanks guys, I'll try Picasa, and then maybe Elements if I can't get it to work. I never have got the hang of the Hue/Sat adjustment box (I had Photoshop 7), after looking at the image something or the other seems to be outlandishly coloured. Will give it another shot.
tubbylardman, that curves tool is whack. A bit hard to get.
When you said "up the colour saturation", MisterOh, is that a setting on the camera?
VyRuZ, I barely know the basics of photography, I think an SLR would be overkill for my sort of skill. But that particular one doesn't seem too expensive. Thanks for the tip. - Luciapalooza, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Pretty cool...it just started to rain when I was looking at these, weird.
- hazelnoot, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2I miss the rain in most of the pictures.
- cday, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2So, buy it whydon'tcha? :)
- staffrocket, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Make some better ones!
- jorgenmz, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2Thanks! I didn't know there was a name for this. Also, wikipedia cites papers with scientific information.
It's amazing how finding the name of things can unlock a great deal of knowledge. - 2Deluxe, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2That's pretty neat; http://flickr.com/photos/timijimi/137500764/ this one (3rd down) is right outside my apartment, in Melbourne Docklands looking towards the city. It's a pretty accurate representation of the last 4 months of weather -___-;;
- staffrocket, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2I educated by this YouTube video about it by Simon Rex, you may know him from the Scary Movie series anyways he claims "LA is like groundhog day same old *****, never ***** rains". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTu6VAIHE24
- KMye, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1WTF are you talking about!!!???
I've been giving you due ***** courtesy in other threads, but you're going to ***** with me for calling out a website that's carelessly infringing copyright within its posts for profit???
I've heard back from 4 photographers so far who confirm their images were stolen, and have contacted SmashingMag, to no avail so far. Do you really want to be the poster boy for photographic theft???
*****, you are truly ***** dull-witted....
edit: are you so ready to suck any top digg users' dick that you'll post the kind of ***** you did above without looking into what you're posting about??? /rhetorical question
pathetic... - yerlamow, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Makes me want to go out in the rain and soak myself for hours.

Turbo3G: I did find the white balance setting, but this clunky behemoth doesn't have tungsten. In search of that, though, I did find the incredibly neat 'Preset White Balance' setting, and I'm just giving that a whirl now. - alitaptap, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Great photos! I especially like the last one :)
- rheaume, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Im pretty sure this is a composition of different shots
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2131/2414413786_450 ...
Thoughts? - MisterOh, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1color saturation is something you can adjust in pretty much all image editing software. It should be there in Photoshop too. SOME cameras do have setttings that take pictures with increased color saturation.. but I think it's better just to do that manually via software instead of letting the camera choosing how much to change for you.
- archivist, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1i love the heavy clouds framing the small little house... on the prarie?
- staffrocket, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Most of them are awe inspiring shots, check them out!
- Daed, on 09/09/2008, -0/+1Brilliant.
- forchilli, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Very great photos. Some were unreal!
- sweetfeld28, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Excellent Photos. I love it when it rains.
- SeaFour, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Ditto! I thought it was just my imagination until I looked outside : )
- Turbo3G, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Most point and shoot cameras also have a WB adjustment setting. Setting the WB to tungsten will give you a blue tint in most light, except tungsten lighting, of course. :)
- timijimi, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0Cheers 2Deluxe, it's a wonderful view of the city from there - I especially love it when the low clouds roll in.
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -1/+1Only if you're bitter and looking to bitch about 'top' users.
Or if you have no idea as to what fair use is. - timijimi, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0PS: I generally use a manual WB setting. I'll find an area of white or neutral colour in my shot and use that as a reference for creating a custom white balance. I find usually the preset white balances don't always cut it. Sometimes though, you have no choice.
- timijimi, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0I agree with Turbo3G. You don't need additional software to create that effect. It can all be created in-camera. The main issue you have to contend with shooting city skylines is all the light that the buildings emit. Because they are often tungsten lights, you tend to get an orange glow in the sky - despite it not being apparent when you shot the photo. Our eyes tend to balance for it automatically. Setting your white balance to counteract the orange will give you the blue colouring. In fact, it should give you a more realistic representation of what you are seeing. I took that photo of the city skyline http://flickr.com/photos/timijimi/137500764/ and that is the technique I used. No photoshop, no post processing, just shot in-camera with a cheap digital SLR.
- drago71, on 03/05/2009, -0/+0Very nice photos!
- ClarenceDarrow, on 09/09/2008, -0/+0I hate all rights reserved photos... why even look at them if you can't use them for anything. Maybe we can glorify the photographer and put them on a platform in Times Square and cheer for them... NOT. I love giving GREAT photos away to tell self OVER INFLATED photographers like this one to get off their high horse and act like the rest of humanity for a change.
- tonyalfaust, on 12/18/2008, -0/+0of Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) as something evil to be hunted and killed.
"In Gordon Walker, we have the hunter is who is sort of taking it to that level of being a fascist or what we like to call a 'Human Supremacist' and we have continued to take the character into that really aggressive and brutal way of thinking."
