- arjie, on 09/06/2008, -1/+28When I was a kid there was this little pond nearby I use to go for a swim in, and there were fish all over the place and the stones at the bottom felt slimy. I miss my childhood, I lived in a small town and there was so much space. Right now I'm sitting on the 20th floor of a building, and all around me are buildings, slums, an atomic research center and the only nice green hill nearby is off limits because there's a nuclear plant on the other side. It's a Saturday evening and I'm listening to the sounds of loud vehicle horns from the street below and trains along the track on the other side.
I want to go back to being a kid. - badnewshotel, on 09/06/2008, -1/+23Natural swimming pool looks a lot like pond to me.
- Codename, on 09/06/2008, -1/+21I'd be skeptical going in there, I mean I might have to wrassle' some alligators.
- kellfinder, on 09/05/2008, -2/+21What a great way to get some exercise and refreshment without your eyes stinging and your hair turning green from chlorine. Beautiful!
- tj241, on 09/05/2008, -0/+15Very nice. I've had a salt water system for a few years now and love it. Not natural...but not chlorine.
- Lula87, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16These are much cooler than regular backyard pools, and much better for the enviroment too!
- davidg11, on 09/06/2008, -3/+14"You can drink the water if you want to..."
Uh. No. - solittledeserve, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Anyone been to Barton Springs in Austin? It's a large, natural, spring-fed public swimming pool where the water is clear and is a constant 68 degrees. Now THAT is a sustainable natural pool. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/bartonsprings.htm
- allaboutdatiki, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8I have a pool and a pond ...
- gamben0, on 09/06/2008, -3/+9The day a chlorine pool poses a serious threat to the environment is the same day Ron Paul becomes president.
- loconet, on 09/06/2008, -4/+10The insanely annoying slide shows I can take (some times), slide shows with advertisement slides I cannot.

http://www.thedailygreen.com/cm/thedailygreen/imag ... - arjie, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5The green that you see isn't trees, it's us urban dwellers' envy surrounding you.
- MTessa, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Beautiful. I love the lily pads.
- davidg11, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5The pond would be good for you.
- dhughes, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5 Grab a shovel.
- Evildudetx, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4***** if those are pools.....pools do not have plants. Ponds have plants and ***** in them.
Plus I would love to see how much extra work goes into keeping the algae out. Not to mention mosquitoes, frogs, or anything else that might want to take up residence in your pond. - TheGuruStud, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Holy *****! How many men have lost their balls to shrinkage there?!?!?!?
- BuddingMonkey, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5i think that's the point
- kiiwii, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4You don't have to go back to being a kid to be able to live that lifestyle again.
Just get out of the city. - dhughes, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3 In Canada we call those things a backyard rink.
- Soulbow2, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3There are still small towns by the way. I live in one, right now I'm surrounded by trees, where I can barely see my neighbor's house.
- DD00, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3I also installed a salt water system in my pool and it is essentially making chlorine, but it is nothing like using regular chlorine. It's almost like swimming in salt water. It hurts your eyes much less and your skin feels better when you get out. It doesn't have that just went swimming feel you normally have.
I've noticed that washing my hair after is about the same though. I don't know if it happens for everyone, but my hair is 'harder' to wash after I go swimming. But the salt system is more than worth it, just in the amount you save not using chemicals alone. The salt is dirt cheap and needs to be applied about once every 3 months. - manmademark, on 09/06/2008, -3/+6Hmm, so is the bottom covered with dirt like a lake? Doesn't look as inviting as the captions try to make them out to be. They're gorgeous looking but I wouldn't be jumping at the opportunity to swim in them. I think I like the traditional pool a bit better.
- Poindexter, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4Those are some cool pools, but where I live those things would be full of snakes in a week...At least when a snake gets in my pool now I can see it!
- molebee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Where can I get one?
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3nah #1 is better
- WriterSD, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Gorgeous! I want #5!
- bocce, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I like the pool on #17.
- atact88, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2There are more chemicals - from nature - in pristine natural river water than in pool water.
- jave8u, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Typing all of this up probably took more time than the slide show. And also thanks for making this page longer.
- flatspin99, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2This is BS guys. BTW, a saltwater pool IS a chlorine pool.
I run a low chlorine pool, have no issue with hair or clothing bleaching out.. Just can't follow the advice of the "pool guys" at the store. They just want to sell you stuff. Do some research and you'll save money and have a great, clean, pool. - charlietuna, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I guess we have some thin skinned hippies here.
- ohmanger, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2So okay the ads are annoying BUT what makes the article is the image captions; they give a bit of an insight into what is going on. For starters they clearly explain how the water stays clear of critters. Worth reading before commenting.
- TheGuruStud, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I agree that they're better. One university here installed one for their new dorms and it feels much better. It tastes a little salty, but that's it.
- GDigger25, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2gorgeous!
- frogsoblivious, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2i use one of the biggest pools in the world.....the ocean
- shimmyNshake, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Carl Spackler: Do you have a pool?
Ty Webb: A pool... and a pond.
A pond would be good for you.
Natural spring.
Carl Spackler: Anything would be good. - charlietuna, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I don't mind, but I hear that truly natural ponds have things like leeches in them. I guess some hungry Koi would keep them in check.
- TheGuruStud, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Don't be hating on blondes or I'll have to come knock your bitch ass down.
Bleach "blondes" on the other hand... - Mithivh, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1There's a pool in #17?
- DM05, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1It sure is an awesome way to fight the man by sitting at your computer on digg ChineseDemocrat.
- pintomp3, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1i see where you are coming from but you've got to lighten up a bit. instead of changing our consumption/consumerism we are just painting our plastic green. but is this really what disgusts you the most? you realize we are still at war and people are dying, right?
- xavyre, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Number 16...that dog isn't stupid enough to jump into that scum filled sewer.
- charlietuna, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2Whether or not these pools are "sustainable" I do applaud the creative idea of using Ozone to treat the water. You do realize that each watt of energy you consume is about 3/4 foot pound per second? So a ten watt water pump would be about the same energy as pulling up 7.5 pounds a foot every second. Think about the energy to run the pool and convert it to an equivalent in human work and you see how sustainable a western lifestyle is. Now I don't pretend to live in a cave sewing my own clothing, but the facts remain.
Lets convert this to hamster power units. I have it on good authority that a hamster puts out about one half watt. One horsepower = 745.7 watts, so we would need about 1492 hamsters to run a one horsepower pump. Note that's neglecting frictional and inductive losses. Anyhow assuming each hamster weighs about 50 grams we would need to support 75 kilograms of hamster slaves in the galley below the pool. That would be a hamster wheel about 250 feet long (allowing 2 inches width per worker). Maybe solar power would work better?
http://www.newscientist.com/backpage.ns?id=mg19325 ... - xeomage, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2You obviously didn't read the article. It started out by saying that traditional alternatives to chlorine are $5000+ ozone generators, but natural swimming pools don't use ozone at all.
They can use a skimmer and maybe UV sterilization, but the natural component is water plants, non-harmful bacteria, and sunlight to create a water purifying ecosystem.
But don't let that get in the way of your rush to knock environmentally minded folks as "eco-fascists". - atact88, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Nice. Now how about the worms, parasites, fungi, bacteria, algae, and plankton?

http://hyipnews.freehostia.com/hyip - Mier, on 09/06/2008, -2/+3what *****. Gonna love it when those kids come out of those pools with some interesting issues. 5k for an "eco-friendly" non-chlorine pump that's 2x what an equal pump would cost. These guys are full of *****, and you eco-freaks just eat it up. For ***** sake, you think everyone in a lab coat is out to destroy the world with freaky chemicals. Quick quiz ***** there's chlorine in your drinking water? Ya know you sorta don't want critters in your water.
- HenryLegge, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Or do you like the girl? I certainly do
