- sonnygill, on 06/23/2008, -4/+84Just give people the damn cans, do people really need cups?
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -3/+72Well maybe they could half this problem with two girls per cup?
- diggymow, on 06/24/2008, -1/+41Why am I not a plastic cup manufacturer?!
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+30but they could use the cans as weapons!!!11
- maxlightz, on 06/24/2008, -7/+29Stop your whining. Recycle them and move on with life ... what's the difference in weight of 1million plastic cups vs 1 million glass (or other sanitary reusable) cups? The fuel cost alone would have you whining about our carbon footprint blah blah etc.
- RomanThommassen, on 06/24/2008, -5/+232 girls, 1 million cups.
- aywwts4, on 06/24/2008, -0/+14You just wait till your liberal-fancy-pants glass cups shatter in the hands of a would be terrorist. Now you have an armed and moist terrorist.
Don't call it waste, call it freedom-waste. /sarcasm - iamnobody8614, on 06/24/2008, -0/+14If they are not going to use a whole can they should purchase mini-cans(8oz) and just give them the cans. In the current system they are using both cans and plastic cups. This solution would save both money and resources.
- jayscot, on 06/24/2008, -3/+17Oh great, now some poor little town with a plastic cup factory is going to be destitute when the airlines try to appease the anti-plastic cup lobby.
- antonio97b, on 06/24/2008, -1/+11I worked at safeway for almost a year. Never once did I encounter any of that *****. Maybe a little dust from a palate or something.
You worked at one crackhead grocery store I guess. - Danskiii, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9Chris Jordan talked about this at TED last February. The video is here: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/279 and it includes some more of his art.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+10It would be even better if I were allowed to bring my own bottle of water to the airport, and they got rid of the drink service completely.
- wettestwillie, on 06/24/2008, -0/+8I always just ask for the can. Only once have I been denied.
- Skyhoper, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6I was forced to waste about 10 cups on my recent transatlantic flight.
- thumbulate, on 06/24/2008, -4/+10i wish they were filled with beer.
- zadadka, on 06/24/2008, -1/+7Was that flushed or spouted?
- Ericular, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6With security the way it is, your only other options are to bring an empty water bottle (or full bottle 3oz or less) and fill it with liquid after passing the security checkpoint... or purchase a drink once you're through security ($$$). I faced this situation last week, and it was just less of a hassle to wait for a beverage on the plane.
- yuanzhoulu, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6a lot of airlines i've been on use glass cups. Lufthansa, for example.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Plus, imagine all the money the airlines would save?
We live in a society where soda companies won't use sugar, because they can save money using corn syrup instead. So why do airlines want to keep shelling out money for billions of unnecessary plastic cups? - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6Maybe two cups, definitely not 3-4.
- whyufail, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6Right, because we can't discuss one problem without discussing every other single problem remotely related to it right? Hell, lets cram six or seven pages about how people should change their diet because obesity effects mileage and blah blah blah. We know its a freaking problem, but this isn't about that! You want to read something about carbon footprints? Then go read a freaking article about carbon footprints, not one about cups!
- ilistenisee, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Are the cups recyclable? I would think the airlines have acknowledged the problem, and have dealt with accordingly to reduce costs.
- KingGorilla, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5Yes it's because of frivolous spending on plastic cups and not their ***** service
- ptoomey, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4We use cups for mixing chemicals in our workshop and buy the same size and style as the airlines use for about 2 cents each in quantities of 10,000. I would imagine the airlines would be paying WAY less at the volumes they're using.
- pwr4, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Do you really want to use a flimsy plastic cup that been used by someone before? Even if you use a thick plastic cup or a glass cup, that extra weight has an effect on the fuel burned to keep the plane in the air. I used to work for American Airlines, and the weight of a cup of coffee with a styrofoam cup 2 years ago cost about $7.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Very eye-opening, thanks for sharing.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Remember, they fill the cup with ice first
- mrcichy, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5I'd say: 2 million girls, 1 million cups
- coyote1284, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4I wasn't aware that Americans were the only nationality that use airliners. Nice try at an "America sucks" troll.
- aladrin, on 06/24/2008, -1/+5Yeah, he pulled it out of his ass. A simple Google search and a calculator reveals that you can get 9oz cups for half that wholesale, even without connections. I wouldn't be surprised if the airline price was closer to 1c each.
Still, that's $40k a day on cups at 1c each. - KMartSheriff, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Jesus some of you guys are cheapskates. You're talking about removing soda/peanuts to save $5 on plane tickets? On a ticket that is at least like $90? I love the complimentary drink/snake service. Just because you want to save 5 measly dollars doesn't mean we should all suffer.
On that note, yes, I do think they should allow you to bring your own drink if you wanted to. - lpmiller, on 06/24/2008, -4/+7yes, it's not the use of fuel to fly, or the amount of carbon an airplane uses, it's the use of RECYCLED cups that is horrendous. Seriously?
- Bmarofsky, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4Just drink out of the can with a straw. But then they would have to refrigerate the cans.
- dougmc, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3As if any airline had *good* beer. (At least not in the US.)
Life is too short to drink bad beer. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5Make biodegradable plastic from HEMP!
- breakaway, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3HALVE
- Daedalus81, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4And where do you get $0.05 per cup, hmm? You just making that up?
- lusenok2, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3...and they ban people from brining their own water bottles
- cubeeggs, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4On the average flight, do you think a single cup gets recycled? They actively encourage you to throw them in the trash bags, and very few people take the cups home with them and figure out where they take airline cups for recycling. Also, you can't recycle plastic cups into more plastic cups. The recycling changes the structure of the plastic. Also, when the new biodegradable cups get mistakenly sent in for recycling, it lowers the value of the new plastic.
- jawagas, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Ted.com is an amazing website, I love to share it.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2Agreed. Air travel is expensive - LIVE WITH IT.
I, personally, think it's worth the money. Going anywhere in the world, safely, in a matter of hours? Definitely worth it.
If you wanna save some money, walk there. Or go trans-oceanic in a DIY canoe. - KMartSheriff, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot.
- rickishomer, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2This wasn't a good comment 30 minutes ago, what makes you think it is now?
- thebigbradwolf, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2So, the question comes to which is better? Using water/heat/chemicals to wash glasses or plastic cups...
- mnky9800n, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2And I have always been handed the can with the cup. So It is not like they are conserving cans either. They use just as many cans as they do cups, soda wise at least.
- SteeleJK, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2What really sucks is the fact that the last several flights I can remember wouldn't even serve peanuts because too many people are allergic. They serve some crappy other snacks.
But yeah, Agreed. They might as well make planes without cushions in the seats, windows, in-flight movies, inclining seats, first class, overhead storage, and include only one bathroom so people can save a few bucks. - Gurf, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2What the ***** are you talking about?
- whyufail, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2New update: 1 million plastic straws used by airlines every six hours!
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2But Rufus never knew George Bailey
- Grimdotdotdot, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Well, no *******, Sherlock.
