New MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Disassembled!
iFixit.com — With photos! iFixit disassembled the new MacBooks with Intel's 'Merom', and posted hi-res photos of the new processor, 802.11n wireless card, new SuperDrives, Firewire 800 port, and more. Their MacBook Pro disassembly instructions still work to show you how to get inside and upgrade the hard drive or RAM.

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro/ - slasherx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's a shame they don't show how much thermal grease this iteration comes with from the factory. It would make for an interesting topic.
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6From the first reports this unit seems to run much cooler, around 50º on idle and 60º under some load. There are wider air vent holes in these ones, resulting in better air flow so I think the thermal paste is not as critical.
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Someone took apart their macbook on the forums after they got their heatsink replaced (do to shutdown issue I guess) and the new heatsinks have Thermal pads and no heatsink compound. I guess apple listened to the "Too much thermal grease" guys on all the forums.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The necessity of the thermal grease was never in question. The manufacturing process was to be faulted. Everyone, including Apple, alread knows that too much thermal grease decreases cooling efficiency.
- lxdengar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As reported by the SMC FanControl folks, the new MBPs have a default fan speed of 2000 RPM, not 1000 like the previous model. This may account for a significant portion of the lower temperature.
- onelikeseabass, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4awesome! a complete guide on how to void the warranty!
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14wow beautiful, do other brand laptops look as good as this?
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Wow a thread arsonist at work. Why insult other brands especially when it just incites flame wars and turns people off?
- Benjin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what was the temp on the core (1) duo ones?
- aprocter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2do these laptops have the whine exhibited by 1st generation macbook pros??
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No reports about that anymore. Neither noise, whine or excesive heat. Even the lid seems to close properly without gaps.

- Visk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"The processor is soldered onto the logic board."
- AAJ2K, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1its just crazy!!
- bshellenberg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I'm sorry... I actually RTFA and I'd have to ask. Why is this interesting at all? Is it the LAST paragraph on the last page that starts with "Shameless plug:"? This is a bloody advertisement and nothing more.
- cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's a rubbish advertisement if you have to click through pages to get to the advert bit.
- dignon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1LOL. The MBP and MBP C2D is 1" thick, not 3.25" thick - as the article states.
- thejof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"same surprisingly thin *box* as the original MacBook Pro (only 3.25")"
- marcuso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think that he means the shipping carton is 3 1/2 inches thick.
- alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who wants to change the processor out on a laptop?
More importantly, who wants to OPEN their laptop and mess with the parts.
On desktops, I have no remorse gutting them open. Hell my desktop computer is an open case with hard drives dangling without mounts and cabling everywhere.
My Macbook... i feel like i am violating it by removing the battery.
It just seems so supremely perfectly constructed.- akkuma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Perhaps the old saying fits best here of don't judge a book by its cover.
- wjanoch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And don't judge a performance boost by a CPU speed increase. A CPU that's 10% faster does not even come close to getting you a Computer that's 10% faster (unless the CPU is the only component your favorite software uses {sarcasm} ).
Seriously, I've torn my share of PCs apart and beefed up enough systems to say, keep the lid on and you'll be more productive, spending all that time trying to "make it better" will cost you more than it gains you. Save your money for your next well engineered system (unless you do it for the fun of it, then it's priceless, so knock your self out).

- macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I like it. Now if Apple could only clock the GPU on the old ones higher up.
- bufbarnaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The Mac is just another PC clone now, albeit with the "trusted platform module" TRUSTED ?! Oh and you can talk with a nasal tone like the guy on the Lexus commercial.
- wjanoch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Trolling? Here's a nibble: PC's can't run OS X... so other x86 ish platforms are Mac Clones! ;-D

- bsdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well I ordered my new Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo thinking that the fan noise problems etc would have been worked out. Not the case. The very first time I turned on my MBP I had the infamous fan ticking that seemingly originates from the right speaker grille.
I called apple support. They said I would have to send it in for repair.
What a crock. They want me to send a computer that I have not even had for an entire day back to get a REPAIR! I sent it back for a refund. Hopefully Apple will get their S%!T together.- wethackrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do realize this comment doesn't help you... coming in January as it does... but others may benefit from it. Any Apple retail store will happily exchange a defective new Apple product for a new replacement if you bought it from the online store or another Apple retail store. MacMall has the same policy. My first MBP arrived from the Apple developer store with an overheating problem and the local Manhattan Beach Apple store exchanged it, no questions asked. The decision is left to the store manager, but the company mandate it to get the problem solved on the spot. I don't know when the 'cutoff' period is for calling the machine 'new' but I'd guess ten days or so.
My CD MBP eventually did go in for service for a whining fan and came back with a revised logic board and two new fans. I've recently bought a Core 2 Duo MBP and it is VERY quiet and, thanks to the new processor, MUCH cooler. Others have estimated 50 degrees F cooler and that would not surprise me. The C2D is the coolest (and fastest of course) running laptop I've had since my Lombard PowerBook.
