iPod shuffle, now just $49
engadget.com — Well, what do you know. What was $79 just a few minutes ago is now just $49. Making room for something new are we Apple?

- TheBigBrother, on 02/19/2008, -2/+14Heisenberg is both proud and displeased until you see him
- ShrimpCrackers, on 02/20/2008, -2/+1Yeah and maybe this time it doesn't have USB 1.1 speeds like the iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen. There is no explanation why the Shuffle takes almost 20 minutes just to top off the 1gb worth of music while my iPhone does it well under 2 minutes.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6No, that's Schroedinger.

- Tob3z, on 02/19/2008, -21/+6Wifi music syncing. Humm for some reason I think this has already been done. But I just can't think what device did it. Well it's got to be worse than the iPod...
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -3/+5Let me guess...the Zune? The problem with the original was that it didn't sync to your music library through WiFi, just the lame squirt a self-destructing tune to a friend with another Zune.
- pintomp3, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5i believe you can wifi sync now. does the free upgraded firmware on the old one also allow it?
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I wasn't aware of that. If the Zune does sync wirelessly, then that's one strike against it I'm willing to remove. Now, just make it work natively with Macs and I'll consider it. I still hate the Zune Marketplace though and it's Points (which is like a free loan to MS for all unused ones)
- razrielle, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Yes the old zune will work with the wifi syncing withthe firmware update
- mrBitch, on 02/21/2008, -0/+2Yes, wifi sync works, but only if the zine is plugged in to a power source!
- Tob3z, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0Aww I got dugg down. Too many Apple lovers? Shame. I'm waiting for the zune to hit Europe... so I guess I will have to wait another year.
- Tob3z, on 02/19/2008, -21/+6Wifi music syncing. Humm for some reason I think this has already been done. But I just can't think what device did it. Well it's got to be worse than the iPod...
- LeeSoong, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1w00t ! Only $49 to pay another $ 240 for the Apple DRM songs to fill it, AWESOME !
Apple DRM - Sweet Sweet Profits !
Q: What happens if the Apple DRM server shuts down and you can no longer 'verify' you purchased the music - oops.
Enjoy the sound of silence.

- Shiftgood, on 02/19/2008, -73/+7Im really glad people are still making fun of the Macbook Air. It still gets me every time.... I mean... i cant believe apple would try to make something new like that... what ***** idiots... we should just point and laugh untill they make something new again... god i cant wait... besides my geek penis is so big compared to those people that buy macs, they basically deserve to be told how under me they are. Constantly.
P.S. have you seen a macbook air in real life? the screen shots tell you nothing about it. Its really a remarkable machine. I know it has its limitations, but so does the first relase of most things. Im sure this is the first step in the future of laptops. Love it or leave it, but... gawd.... get over the lame jokes...- dinot, on 02/19/2008, -3/+40Attention Digg users. In order to appease this user, please remember that POKING FUN AT APPLE OR APPLES IS NOT ALLOWED.
- Shiftgood, on 02/19/2008, -26/+3its... just that the air jokes are getting a bit tired. show some creativity... thats all.. still poke fun.
- Otto, on 02/19/2008, -6/+24Get over it. The Air was made to be laughed at. When you try to sell a turd, it doesn't make any difference how shiny and thin it is.
- rayraym0fucka, on 02/19/2008, -9/+4@otto
It's ***** up how people are still buying that *****. ; - Shiftgood, on 02/19/2008, -15/+2guys.. im not here to try to promote the Air as the best thing ever. Your geek prowess is obviously so far superior to mine. Im just a lowly idiot that cant even overclock my self built computer to play the last boss on crysis. You guys obviously have a better life than i do and enjoy only the finest in technology and look down from your thrones upon the weaklings of society.
I was just saying you should get some new jokes. - root1657, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Why should anyone be any more creative or less tired than all the bashing that is done to any other product?
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5It shows that shiftgood is here to promote himself as a ***** idiot.
- Gosroth, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0uhhh... an apple a day keeps dr-dos away?
- pixel4e, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1You, my friend, are an idiot! I fart in your general direction.

- LeeSoong, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Macbook Air $1799 Overpriced.
Just make the Macbook like the Macbook Air for $999 GREAT.
( oh, and include a USB 2.0 DL BlueRay / DL DVD R/W Lightscribe drive in with it too! )
- Shiftgood, on 02/19/2008, -26/+3its... just that the air jokes are getting a bit tired. show some creativity... thats all.. still poke fun.
- brstilson, on 02/19/2008, -4/+19The MacBook Air is a laptop that has fewer capabilities, but is much more expensive because it's THIN. That's it. That's the only advantage. You only have one USB port, no optical drive, no possibility of RAM or hard drive upgradeability.........but it's THIN!!!
Jobs has to be a ***** retard to think people are going to buy the Air just because it's marginally thinner than it's already thin, cheaper, and more full-featured MacBook and MacBook Pro line.- skidooer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7We know that some people already have bought it. We don't know how many Apple planned on selling. They may have already exceeded their targets for all we know.
- root1657, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4So even if he ultimately breaks even on the product, look how many times he got people to talk about the Apple brand, essestially for free. It was all free press, and it doesnt matter that it was all negative, because the mac heads arent going to revolt on him.
- MacParrot, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Did anyone REALLY revolt when Vista landed with a thud? They either didn't buy it or upgrade. Mac people are the same way. The Air never made me want to reach for my wallet so I won't buy one. It's called free will.
- jblack15, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0The difference between the two is that 90% of press covering Apple is worship, and 90% of press covering Microsoft is downright hatred.
- Gosroth, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4the air brings widespread attention to ssd... it is the future and the more people know about it, the cheaper it will become.... oh and how does this all have to do with the shuffle going down in price to $49.99?
- LeeSoong, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1you forgot to mention the sealed in battery - the first disposable laptop, by Apple.
- Philbert, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9I was just looking at one at Best Buy a couple days ago. Yes, it's thin, that's about all it has going for it.
- dinot, on 02/19/2008, -3/+40Attention Digg users. In order to appease this user, please remember that POKING FUN AT APPLE OR APPLES IS NOT ALLOWED.
- raynar, on 02/19/2008, -17/+4They're not making room, they're getting rid of old inventory to make way for the newer ones. sheesh.

Creative's kicking them in Price and Feature rang with the Zen Stone and the Zen Stone Plus !
That's whats happening !- richarddawsonuk, on 02/19/2008, -9/+28Suuuuuure it is.
Creative doesn't have a stitch on Apple. - stellarceltic, on 02/19/2008, -8/+24You're absolutely crazy if you think Apple is worried about any other company in regards to portable media.
- sauvaget, on 02/19/2008, -8/+6i sold my shuffle for a creative stone plus.
much better value.- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -6/+12The shuffle blows donkey balls.
- ricksite, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7How is selling one thing and buying another a better value? Did you make so much on your shuffle to cover the cost of the stone and have money left over? If so, the shuffle is a good value due to its high resale value.
- soopafly, on 02/19/2008, -4/+4I sold my Porsche and bought a Honda..much better value :-/
- Gosroth, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0actually... with the cost of gas
- sauvaget, on 02/19/2008, -8/+6i sold my shuffle for a creative stone plus.
- xombiefarts, on 02/19/2008, -16/+8You have to remember this is a apple fan boy haven, even if apple dropped a big fat turd and called it iPoop shuffle , diggers would still worship the ground it lays on.
- stellarceltic, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6LAWL so original... no seriously... never heard that one before...
- soopafly, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Every site I visit, there seems to be someone constantly complaining that the site is made for Apple fan boys. Is there a site for Windows fan boys? Is there such thing as a Windows fan boy?
- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Amen Bro
- brstilson, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9I remember clearly a scene from Pirates of Silicon Valley, where Jobs is yelling at Bill Gates for copying Mac OS to make Windows. "Our stuff is better, Bill!," says Jobs. Gates replies: "Don't you get it? It doesn't matter!"
It's true, the best product does not necessarily dominate the market. Creative's product line is more featured-filled, and the price is better, but where can I go buy one? Best Buy doesn't carry them where I live. Every store I've been to has the huge iPod section and a paltry "everything else + Zune" section. Plus, Apple has too much market penetration to be unseated from it's position. So many people have bought into the DRM of iTunes that switching to another player brand is impossible. Most people aren't going to play the cat-and-mouse game with iTunes and qtFairUse versions to strip the DRM off their songs, either. Creative has already lost millions of iTunes customers right out of the gate, and it's not their fault.
The Creative Zen is just another example of how DRM and the DMCA KILL the free market by stifling competition. Once a company beats the competition, the current laws make sure they stay king for good.- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Ipods are gonna phase out. Slowly, but surely just have faith. Zune's are awesome, especially the new 80s. Human nature entails rebellion. Look for the next few generations of mp3 player consumers to shift from ipod to zune simply cuz it's different and still microsoft. Kinda like cheating cuz they wont be scared of getting screwed, and they can still break the mold. What will follow is a massive apple downsize because they live off their mp3 sales.
- OneLess, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2The exclamation points convinced me you are right!!!!
- richarddawsonuk, on 02/19/2008, -9/+28Suuuuuure it is.
- vackraord, on 02/19/2008, -4/+63The shuffle had a pretty steep price tag compared to the competition so this is very welcome. Maybe I will buy a new one to replace the one i accidental ran in the washer last summer.
- MellerTime, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15Does the old one still work?
- greenlight2001, on 02/19/2008, -2/+65It did, until he tried to dry it off in the dryer.
- alittleroy101, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Should have used the microwave.
- Kadratis, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Heh, mine did. It even survived a night in the harshness of the cold because it somehow unclipped itself from my jacket. I found it outside the next day and it worked just fine.
- Lounger540, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Mine was run over by some skiers in a half-pipe, the day after it was walked on in a foot of snow on the sidewalk. Still works, after I bent it back to fit into the dock of course.
- nextyoyoma, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1hm....he's buying a replacement....so I think it's a safe bet t doesn't work.

- ryanonfire, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Same thing happened to my 1st gen ipod shuffle (1GB). It cost $229 in Australia in 2005 :(.

- nextyoyoma, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5OMG, electronics are more expensive when they first come out! How amazing!
- BryanJK, on 02/20/2008, -0/+11. Doesn't Australia have a higher currency amount?

- nextyoyoma, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5OMG, electronics are more expensive when they first come out! How amazing!
- jakem1, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11They really saw you coming. Seriously though, what would possess you to spend so much money (even taking into consideration the fact that they're Australian dollars) on something as pathetic as the iPod Shuffle?
- ryanonfire, on 02/19/2008, -1/+12lol i said it cost $229, i never said i paid for it :P
- fliped, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1hey thats nothing.. when I was one of the first people to buy the third gen ipods 20gb I paid 579$ (Canadian) + tax + warranty which came out to just a bit above $700!
- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Ha, warranty noob. (unless you bought AppleCare.)
- screwfanboys1, on 02/19/2008, -14/+7you paid what? hah, tool
- jaredforshey, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3I did the same thing! It went through the washer and the dryer. I figured it was as good a time as any to open it up and check it out. After airing out for a few hours, it still works! Interestingly, the stock headphones were coiled around it during the wash/dry and suffered the most cosmetically - lots of cuts in the insulation, and the rubber surround on the buds themselves have nicks and indentations where it melted a little. Even they still work, though there's a little more distortion than I remember.
- ryllharu, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Both my first and second gen 1gig Shuffles have gone through both the washer and dryer. Both still function perfectly.
After the Apple II, the Shuffle is my favorite Apple product.- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Are you sheltered?
- johnmatias, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4The Ipod Shuffle.
Apple's way of saying "Ah, ***** it" - JensUK, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Washed and dried mine. Stock buds were toast, and now the shuffle is very finicky about the plug in connection; I have to monitor it too much to be fun. I've been thinking about getting a replacement. :|
- Niz1, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I did the exact same thing, i washed it and hung it out to dry, diddnt even know i had lost it, or what happened until i was folding my gym trasuit bottoms and it was still clipped on! it battery was dead but i think that might be because i never remember to turn it off since you cant really tell Anyway i charged it and it worked fine!
- dn11, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I bought a new one off of ebay 6 months ago for just about $50. Even as a die hard windows user, the Shuffle is a nearly perfect product in my mind. The only downside for me is the clunkiness of iTunes under windows (although I do like some of iTunes features like it's ability to remember right where I left off in a podcast or audiobook), but even so I now use my Shuffle all the time instead of my old iRiver 40gb player. I have no reason to carry around all or most of my music collection at any one time, and messing around with a screen is just distracting and a waste of time. If they tried to add a screen to the shuffle that would be a big mistake in my mind. But 2GB is welcome - that would be just the right capacity to carry a couple audiobooks and a number of podcasts along with my high bit rate music.
- MellerTime, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15Does the old one still work?
- hanyoon, on 02/19/2008, -35/+15Does anyone use the shuffle? I wouldn't be surprised if there were more Zune users than Shuffle users...
- DreKor, on 02/19/2008, -4/+44I know lots of people who use the shuffle. It's their workout iPod. And yes, that means they have at least one additional iPod. The shuffle is small, light, and convenient. With the built in clip they can put it on whatever they're wearing without an extra arm band. And, it's cheap enough that if it falls off and gets lost or broken, it's not a big deal.
- zachtib, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5Yup, after this price drop, I'm considering getting a 1GB shuffle for going to the gym and running. Right now I'm using my 30GB Photo, which is somewhat annoying to take along, the shuffle I can just clip to my shirt.
- tylermoyn, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4I remember when buying a $50 discman was a big deal. A standard price was around $30, but for $50 (or even $100) you could get a nice Sony Walkman. When the iPod originally came out, I thought it was outrageously priced. Now, $300 is normal for just a music player, and a $50 shuffle is chump change. Everything is relative I suppose...
- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -2/+1Shuffle's aren't ideal for workouts. My 30gb Zune is. My strap goes around my left arm. I was born right handed but am now ambidextrous.
But thats besides the point. Zune 80s will rise like phoenixes from the ashes of the 30s!
- wild, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10I see a lot of girls on the train with them clipped their coats.
- munkyxtc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7or as Wild likes to call them. Easy targets...

- munkyxtc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7or as Wild likes to call them. Easy targets...
- colonelpanic, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Yes, at the gym, while biking, skiing, running. Used to use my first gen shuffle all the time. My only complaint is the lack of a sport case for it.
- Shiftgood, on 02/19/2008, -10/+2the shuffle is great for the gym, pool hiking... i like it better than any other iPod.
i hope you washed your foot before you stuck it in your mouth.- natenovs, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7i love pool hiking. i hate how shallow the water gets though...
- mcduckov, on 02/19/2008, -3/+3CRAP! I just bought one a week ago to replace the one I lost.
And yeah, it is about damn near perfect to use while running or at the gym. - adml_shake, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Well i have a 30 gig Zune that I use for my car and normal listening, and I have a shuffle for when I'm jogging and working around the house and can't turn up my stereo.
- deaftly, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13You're going to get dugg down just because you have a zune, I LOVE my 80 gig. See im gonna get dugg down to.
- chinolofus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9the zune is a great player. much better than the ipod classic IMO. i dont understand all the trash talk about them.
- sturdiusmaximus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2The trash talk is mainly about the terrible user interface of the Zune software. I know after switching from my Toshiba Gigabeat S and Mediamonkey to my Zune, I had instant buyer's remorse; all because I couldn't use Mediamonkey to manage my library anymore.
- bthug7, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Zune is the new Ipod. Seriously whenever people see me with mine they're like "whoa thats not an ipod, what is it?" I then show and tell them about the best mp3 player out there.
- deaftly, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13You're going to get dugg down just because you have a zune, I LOVE my 80 gig. See im gonna get dugg down to.
- UNCCEJ1010, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Try running 15 or so miles with a standard ipod and you will realize how the shuffle has its perks.
- JigoroKano, on 02/19/2008, -3/+2I killed 2 60GB hard drives by jogging and now I am waiting for solid state catch up to that.
- deaftly, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11Try wearing sneakers, not hard drives.
- Verdanic, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Uh-oh, I didn't even think of that somehow. I've started running and I've only got my 80GB to do it with (and no case, goes in my hand on the track). Out of warranty by about a year, too. Maybe I should take Apple up on the $50.. though that's still a lot for an MP3 player without a screen.
- minigamer1896, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1If you have a shuffle, there is no need to worry. They have no moving parts to destroy by the jostling.
- Verdanic, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Yea, that's the idea. That, and lugging the 80GB is somewhat noticeable. Especially since I can't put it in a pocket (because then it slaps me in the leg with every stride, not so good).
Maybe if I find $50 somewhere in my poorness.
- Verdanic, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Yea, that's the idea. That, and lugging the 80GB is somewhat noticeable. Especially since I can't put it in a pocket (because then it slaps me in the leg with every stride, not so good).
- huckabee, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1The whole point is that you use it during activities where you won't be looking at the screen. I'm old enough to remember boomboxes, discmans and even walkmans, and compared to that stuff the shuffle is a godsend.
- minigamer1896, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1If you have a shuffle, there is no need to worry. They have no moving parts to destroy by the jostling.
- Vankalker, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Why the hell do you need 60GB to go jogging. You can fit over 200 songs on a 1 GB shuffle (about 1200 minutes).
So unless you are going to jog for a 100 miles you would not have to listen to the same song twice.- Verdanic, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Well in a given day nobody's going to be able to listen to that much either - but it's about having it there if you want it. My music cravings are erratic, so I have the 80GB - I can listen to whatever I want of what I have whenever I want. I love it.
- DreKor, on 02/19/2008, -4/+44I know lots of people who use the shuffle. It's their workout iPod. And yes, that means they have at least one additional iPod. - Daiken, on 02/19/2008, -5/+13Sigh, hating the RIAA does nothing. They're just a mask for the record company and artists to hide behind. If you want to screw them over, then stop buying their products, but most likely since you already hate them, I'm guessing you never bought any of their stuff in the first place. So again, you hating the RIAA means nothing.
- Verdanic, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Well played.
- DemDude, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1I have a record collection of about a hundred discs (by record, I mean CD). That's not much, but it's something. more than 1.500€ worth of CDs. And I ***** hate the RIAA because every time I buy one of their products I have to be afraid to have a rootkit on it. In other words, if I don't buy their stuff I am automatically a criminal, but if I buy their stuff I will be treated even worse.
So there, even as a music lover with a CD collection that is probably much more extensive than today's average, you can still hate the RIAA (and stop buying their products). So shut the ***** up next time, stop thinking that everyone other than you is an idiot, and stop thinking that everyone who hates the RIAA has no reason to do so and no means of leverage.- JoeDiggsIt, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Well, dugg up to the part where you get pissy. - zioxide, on 02/19/2008, -1/+42Why the ***** would you buy Apple headphones anyways? Get Sennheiser earbuds from amazon for like $40 bucks, sound quality is way better.
- RetepNamenots, on 02/19/2008, -7/+1The shuffle's sound quality isn't the greatest from the get-go anyway.
Maaan I wanna have my old 3G back again. How retro.- maexus, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3The shuffle and iPod sound exactly the same, if you think otherwise, you're a moron.

- iBlush, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1And the headphones that come with the Shuffle have a shorter cord.
- aszymczyk, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1the headphones cost $30 not $50
- dpowre, on 02/19/2008, -5/+96you mean...
- bjs3171, on 02/19/2008, -13/+6the shuffle is the same as all those cheap mp3 players you could buy for 25 dollars before the Ipod came out. why should it be more than that?
- mcduckov, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10The big beefy integrated clip (that is the same size as the device) is design genius. I've used those el cheapo mp3 players you mention and there is no comparison. Many of them needed a separate holder with a clip of poor design. If you're going for a 10K run the form of the player matters, a LOT. If you just want something to play while you're driving in the car then yeah this is a crappy choice.
- Roger, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Quality.

- kiwiboyus, on 02/19/2008, -32/+39My wife and I just joined a gym and my iPod video is just too big and heavy so I looked at getting us both a couple of shuffles. There was no way I was going to spend $79 each for one of those so I ended up getting us both 2 Gb Sandisk Sansa Clips which were cheaper plus I don't have to bother with stinking iTunes.
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -9/+83Inaccurate. Diggers don't have wives or go to the gym.

on that note, Office Depot has a sale this week for the 2 GB Sansa Express, which is pretty much a clip plus USB port and microSD slot for 29.99.- Dgen_X, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2I bought one on Saturday (my local store puts out the Sunday sale signs on Saturday evening...and when the prices are posted they are valid)

- frieddonuts, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Just make sure you don't lose the removable clip piece. I know from personal experience that they don't sell replacements. Other than that, it has been a great purchase.
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -9/+83Inaccurate. Diggers don't have wives or go to the gym.
- TheWriteGuy, on 02/19/2008, -14/+6At this point, I think it should be a little bit lower -- perhaps $39.
On another note, tell me I'm not the only one who predicts that the next nano will be a small round disc (the size of a large coin).- tekhna, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9You're the only one. The point of the nano is to have a Flash HD and a screen.
- CastrTroy, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4I hope the next nano won't be any smaller. The new nano supports video. While it's not the best movie watching experience, I does work pretty well for me. Makes bus rides much more interesting.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4I would think that having to bring a magnifying glass with you everywhere would make the whole thing quite un-enjoyable.
- hansonc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I'd like the next nano to be smaller. I don't want a square MP3 player the first 2 gens of the nano had great form factors why ruin it to watch video on a tiny screen?
- zongamin, on 02/19/2008, -4/+2Stupid apple - why didn't they ask you first? Because no one gives a ***** what you think.
- rowlodge, on 02/19/2008, -4/+8i'm still trying to fix my first generation shuffle, all it needs is a battery, i wish they would just make the damn batteries replaceable on all their ipods.
- Balanced, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2That would make them bigger, which is deemed 'bad.'
- CastrTroy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I think they'd have to compromise on size quite a bit to get replaceable batteries on their iPods. Maybe not the iPod video and touch, but definitely on the iPod Nano and Shuffle.
- rowlodge, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8they can fit a watch battery into a small area and make them replaceable, then why not the shuffle ?
- bobartig, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8Well, a watch battery is extremely low power compared to an iPod battery, even the one in the shuffle, and the watch doesn't have any thermal considerations, or charging requirements. I think that they would rather keep the extra lines off the product that a battery door and latch would introduce, since the design of iPods is to be as aesthetically minimal as possible. Basically, Apple has the balls to say "This is cleaner and simpler without a removable battery." and go forward with that idea, regardless of how much it may frustrate some people.
- mCanada, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I'm sure it doesn't hurt that they get you to buy a new ipod either ....
- zongamin, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2Cheapskate
- Whippets, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1They're not going to make the batteries replaceable because that would cost them monney. If they are replaceable then you don't have people sending them in to get the batteries replaced for $40.
- diggB, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Cost of a replacement battery is $49. Comes with a free ipod and ear buds.
- dajernts, on 02/19/2008, -6/+5I feel like Apple rarely releasing a new product with making a big ordeal out of it. This seemed to be a rather quite release. I wonder why.
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -5/+5Because the shuffle isn't their flagship product, doesn't sell well, so they lowered the price and its not a big deal to begin with in the first place?
- automate, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5actually they dont really need to do a keynote for products like these. Us fanboys will ensure that people will hear about any and all products that apple releases without fanfare :) word of mouth advertising is very powerful and effective
- Warblade, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Usually speed or space bumps are released without much fanfare. Just this year alone they upgraded the Mac Pro's and iPhone without a whole keynote surrounding them. In the past they've bumped up the processor speed or hdd capacity of Macbook and Macbook Pro's the same way. This isn't THAT unusual.
- digginamish, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Because the Shuffle (unlike many Apple products) has a very poor feature-set compared to the competition. So many companies have tried to compete with the iPod and have failed to make a dent in their sales, but they have been able to produce a better product than the Shuffle, albeit not as bright and shiny.
- Zedian, on 02/19/2008, -12/+13As an owner of an iPhone and a 30GB iPod video, both are far too heavy to use reasonably at the gym.
At this cheap price I might have to pick one just for the sake of working out.- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -3/+15Even as someone who is not a mac-whore, I can suggest that the nano works fine. Guess what! You don't need 4 different media players for your apparently very busy lifestyle.
- zongamin, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3but he doesn't have a nano
- aladrin, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Right, but he's saying that after he buys the nano, the other 2 are pretty useless... The nano is all you really need.
- hansonc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6he might use the iPhone to make calls...
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Then use it for everything else. Thats like having a universal remote to control your TV, DVD player, cable box and sound system...then using each individual remote anyway.
- hansonc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2@mhender
Don't go to a gym much do you? Working out with a iPhone strapped to your arm is just plain dumb and a shuffle or a nano is perfect for that specific use where as the iPhone sucks for that specific use. - mhender, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1Still doesn't explain why you bought an iPhone and full-sized iPod if you're such a gym buff. Great thinking.
- edicius, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1I think it's fairly obvious that he had a 30 gig iPod, and then bought an iPhone when it came out to replace his current phone. Not to mention that it's not a great idea to have a $500 iPhone slinging around on your arm at the gym.
- hansonc, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6he might use the iPhone to make calls...
- betobeto, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1That's why I've kept my armbanded Nano even as I've got an iPhone now. I also work out several times a week and can't imagine moving around with that phone. Feels like lugging around a brick in comparison.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -0/+31If you think a regular iPod is too heavy, maybe you should start lifting at your gym.
- evangelistc01, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2You're not really supposed to run with a 30GB iPod Video since it sports a hard disk instead of flash. You run the risk of wear and tear. Why do you think a majority of work out accessories are geared towards the Nano?
- cambob76, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Just quit working out. Save the money from not going to the gym to buy the coolest iPod... and then be a fat fanboy.
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -3/+15Even as someone who is not a mac-whore, I can suggest that the nano works fine. Guess what! You don't need 4 different media players for your apparently very busy lifestyle.
- X0MB1E, on 02/19/2008, -3/+17They are trying to compete with creative. I still use my old creative zen, at least you can replace the drive with a larger one. The only thing that went wrong is Vista will destroy your old creative. Now I run a dual boot with xp for it. I also own a shuffle just because I was on vacation and needed something small and needed it immediately

UK Price £49 (around $100)- lejoq, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10In Apple Store Finland the 1GB version is still about 130 USD. Ouch.
- Twee, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15well we gotta make up for the vastly deflated US dollar somehow.

- codwif, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12Man, I was going to complain about the Canadian price. Even thou the dollar is at par, its still more money up here. But twice the price just to cross the pond, that's crazy!
- threepio, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1The Canadian price is dropping to $49 tomorrow. Hyperbole much?
- adrames, on 02/19/2008, -0/+26Jobs doesn't know how to convert currency.
- ryanonfire, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11$65AU in Australia that's $59 USD. But we don't have after sales tax.
- zongamin, on 02/19/2008, -5/+17Its £32 - price also reduced you idiot.

- waydee, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4Yeah thats really bad, especially when another £50 will buy a 4gb 3g nano (which also makes a great workout and general use ipod)
- autoatsakiklis, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Still 299Lt (~$128 USD) here in Lithuania (and it won't change at least for two months). Descpite the fact people working here get more than 2 times less than in USA.
- ggacid, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1So have your friend in the U.S. buy it for you and ship it over there for like $30 or whatever. Save $48!
- Spider208, on 02/19/2008, -5/+1Lol 49 $ = 33 EUR :p suckers :)
- BrendanSheehan, on 02/20/2008, -0/+0At lease you're the ones with Bush.

/pretends that works- ggacid, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1American product? The 3 iPod's that I've bought were all shipped from China!
- woohalladoobop, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1When we can buy Cornish pasties in America, you can start bitching about how expensive stuff is over there.
- whitenerdy92, on 02/20/2008, -3/+1USEFULNESS OF VISTA WIDGETS DISCOVERED!!!

- lukemann, on 02/19/2008, -3/+11I keep on thinking about picking up one of these for when I'm mowing the lawn or doing other work outside. Guess the time is now!
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Yeah. Because lawn mowers aren't very loud.
- dizzoknows, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise-cancelling_head ...
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4I have a pair, and i would know that it wouldn't cancel out the engine of a lawn mower. And if you need a shuffle for portability, you aren't going to get portability with a giant pair of headphones. Good try though.
- lukemann, on 02/19/2008, -4/+0I just turn the volume up louder.
- alittleroy101, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Can't really argue with your points.

- justice7, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11they're great for anything activity related... so frickin' small... and no screen to break.
- mhender, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Yeah. Because lawn mowers aren't very loud.
- LilBoyLuver, on 02/19/2008, -18/+2WHY THE ***** IS THE CAPS LOCK KEY SO BIG?
- enzoten, on 02/19/2008, -13/+33Sorry but the SanDisk Sansa Clip dominates the shuffle and its $35 1GB and $55 2GB. What is the point of an MP3 player without a screen? Just stating the obvious.
- pirloui, on 02/19/2008, -9/+3How does it dominate it?
- enzoten, on 02/19/2008, -4/+11It has a screen. it sounds better than most full size players and def better than the shuffle- pairs up quite nice with Sennheiser HD650s and other expensive phones. cost 15 and 25 dollars less. its plug and play drag and drop MSC. (no itunes no wmp needed).
- waydee, on 02/19/2008, -10/+5Thats great? I'm glad you're so pleased with it.
Now consider this: someone might prefer the shuffle... I know its hard but just try, for the sake of everyone who is tired of some git coming into every ipod related story and telling us that their mp3 player is superior to those that apple offer. We don't care. - Prokaryote, on 02/19/2008, -6/+11You should care, because you're a moron if you buy the Shuffle over a superior, cheaper player.
- Warblade, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3@Prokaryote
Superior by who's standards? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If some guy prefers to use his shuffle then leave him alone. It doesn't affect your purchase in any way.
- waydee, on 02/19/2008, -10/+5Thats great? I'm glad you're so pleased with it.
- Testiculese, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3No iTunes *****?

- kiwiboyus, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Just ordered 2 of the 2 GB models, the shuffle is soooo over priced.
- mhender, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1You're so cool.
- enzoten, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10The Clip really does sound beautiful- here are some pics of it paired up with some sexy audio gear.
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/01/im ...- kiwiboyus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Cheers for that!
- joegibes, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1My faithful ol' Sansa m230's headphone jack is finally giving up the ghost (RIP) and the Clip looks like a decent (and cheap!) replacement. As a matter of fact, I might go buy one today...
- reefsurfer226, on 02/19/2008, -6/+3the point of an mp3 player with no screen is you use it doing things where you are not going to look at the screen like Skiing, Climbing, Riding, working out. yeah i use my shuffle almost everyday, my ipod just stays in my car, unless i travel. then i bring both.
- lime148, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Or you could just, you know, not look at the screen.
- Warblade, on 02/19/2008, -5/+2But why pay for a screen when you're never going to look at it?
- Whippets, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Did you miss the part where it says it's cheaper? Therefore if it is better in every way and it is cheaper then your saving money. Think of the screen as your free gift.
- drouk1556, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Ad hominem, of the circumstantial variety.
- enzoten, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3And here is why the Clip dominates... http://digg.com/apple/Why_Sandisk_Sansa_Clip_is_be ...
- plebiscite, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Plus the FM tuner is pretty nifty.
- darkNiGHTS, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1The Creative Zen Stone is $5 cheaper for both models.
- whitenerdy92, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1But where does that fit into Apple + iPod + iTunes hmmmm?
- BrendanSheehan, on 02/20/2008, -2/+0They don't work with iTunes though.
- dn11, on 02/20/2008, -3/+2what is the point of a screen when you want to LISTEN to audio? the interface of the Shuffle is perfect for a 1-2 GB device. I wouldn't want it any other way. A screen would just be annoying
- pirloui, on 02/19/2008, -9/+3How does it dominate it?
- ensert13, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6Did you read the Apple Product Cycle article....?
- PoppedCulture, on 02/19/2008, -10/+1How much does Apple pay for all this free promotion? I live my iThingie and MacWhatzit too, but I'm not going to prosthelytize for them.
- Portezbie, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5I really hope they bring back the design of the first gen shuffle. I still have mine and it still works perfectly, but I would love to be able to get one now with a gig or two since mine only has 512mb. The first gen shuffle is one of the best mp3 players ive ever owned. Its super durable, which is rare for an ipod product, so light it just dangles from the headphone jack if u drop it, and I love mp3 players with built in usb. Its so convenient to be able to fill it up with friends music or to be able to charge it almost anywhere without having to remember any stupid sync cables.
- exomni, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Why I can't wait for wireless USB.
- Eallan, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Charging...?
- exomni, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3Why I can't wait for wireless USB.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -13/+45Anyone who would pay more than $50 for an MP3 player with no screen is an idiot anyway.
- McSwankypants, on 02/19/2008, -13/+7NEWS FLASH -- Millions of idiots pissed at FredFredrickson's comment.
- McSwankypants, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Oh Digg.
Forget the /sarcasm and look what happens.
- McSwankypants, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3Oh Digg.
- BrendanSheehan, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2I disagree with that comment, I have an iPhone, but I still use my shuffle. There's something nice about having a really tiny player with a clip. I put about 50 songs on it and use it as a nice little playlist for jogging. When I finish jogging, I start it at where I left off next time, and it's great for podcasts. You can add one or two podcasts from itunes, walk to town and listen to them.
- McSwankypants, on 02/19/2008, -13/+7NEWS FLASH -- Millions of idiots pissed at FredFredrickson's comment.
- exomni, on 02/19/2008, -7/+21GB iPod Nano should come down to $70, $80 now.
- Zippo, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9There isn't a 1GB nano... and the 2GB nano is considerably more complex and feature-rich than the Shuffle.
- minitrollster, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4There isn't a 2 GB nano either...
- Zippo, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9There isn't a 1GB nano... and the 2GB nano is considerably more complex and feature-rich than the Shuffle.
- theradical, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11So the shuffle is 49$ and replacement headphones are 29$... the headphones are worth more than the player?
- LightSpeed4, on 02/19/2008, -22/+0stop saying "49", just say 50 u ***** apple fanboy
- mindspaceindia, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Do you say Microsoft 2000 for Microsoft 98, Microsoft fanboy?

- LightSpeed4, on 02/19/2008, -13/+0no but i dont fall for apple marketting tactics like you do ***** idiot
- theradical, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Uh, the 9 for 10 marketing gimmick is pretty standard fare. If you think Apple invented it to trick people then you're a fool.
- whitenerdy92, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1What? Microsoft fanboys actually exist? I thought that they were just some made up thing... silly fools... how little they understand
- edicius, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1It's not $50. It's $49.

- RetepNamenots, on 02/19/2008, -0/+828 day returns?
At least I just asked a genius on the Apple store chat (I bought one a couple of weeks ago for my sister), but I was told I can return it for a refund. In the UK anyway. - metalgel, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1i just bought mine like 3 weeks ago too. apple seems to enjoy doing this. you buy their product and then it gets upgraded/price dropped a month later making you feel like an *****.
- kwilliam71, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5Sorry for the double-post below... didn't see this, but feel the need to reply.
Just bought three of these last week as gifts at the old price... called Apple today and they refunded $53 each, which was more than the difference. I'm now an Apple Store customer for life.
- RetepNamenots, on 02/19/2008, -0/+828 day returns?
- DrMickhead, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Deals like this are probably why Apple's forced to lower the price: http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=60 ...
Before the price break it was $40 cheaper, 1 gig larger (with an expansion slot), and has a screen, FM tuner, and voice recorder. Not a bad Shuffle competitor.- bobartig, on 02/19/2008, -4/+3That does have nice specs. I just wish it wasn't god awful ugly as well. All of the small form factor Sansa's are just hideous crap from a visual perspective. Their med/large units are better looking.
- jsaya, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2My MP3 player is for listening to music not a trendy fashion statement. I don't think this looks that bad: http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/Image/SansaExpress/S ... - only $30 too.
- shotgunefx, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Gay, they won't let me order to my zip code. Oh well.
- cjschmidt, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2With the price and feature list of the Nano, you couldn't possibly charge any more than $80 for a Shuffle. They have to lower the price on the smaller one to sell the 2Gig version. A $50 model actually makes the shuffle viable again, in my opinion.
- pentomino, on 02/19/2008, -2/+16It's quite simple: the iPod shuffle may not have been overpriced at $79 two years ago, but it is now.
You can get a gigabyte MP3 player from Sandisk for $10 on Woot if the winds are blowing the right direction. - screwfanboys1, on 02/19/2008, -3/+372 gb shuffle? so if one wants to listen to a particular song, they might have to hit next 500 times to hear it?
- timusca, on 02/19/2008, -4/+9The whole point of the shuffle is that we don't care what comes next... with only 2GB of space, surely you can find enough songs to fill it that you actually like to listen to at any time...
- BrendanSheehan, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1People are missing the point with the shuffle. It's definitely my favorite iPod. It's cheap, well build, very reliable, tiny, looks good, has a clip, plays music and syncs with iTunes. If I wanted a screen the whole time I'd use my iPhone, but when you are walking, going for a jog, or getting to sleep the shuffle is perfect.
- dn11, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1You realize you can set up a play list in a certain order too right?
- LightSpeed4, on 02/19/2008, -14/+1can u just say 50 dollars instead of 49, wow talk about getting owned by ***** marketing techniques...
- tdogg241, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Yikes. Someone missed their nap.
- kinnetick, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0who the eff cares? it IS $49...

- snikerdoodle, on 02/19/2008, -12/+1oh gosh, apple sucks
i'm sorry for all the people that bought one at regular price.
if you are planning on buying one why not wait till it costs a 20 bucks maybe next week.
apple sure nows how to screw customers. - askthequestion, on 02/19/2008, -10/+1good.
hopefully, all of apple's line will go down.

maybe its because
the
Apple Air's coming out .
or
maybe apples coming out with something new. . .
you know apple they like to target the "hipsters". - SqlByte, on 02/19/2008, -12/+7We in Serbia are so rich our shuffle cost 150$..

- neverend3r, on 02/19/2008, -0/+17I just sold my used one for $40. awesome
- GIFF3, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7I bought a refurbished blue one last year for $50. I used it for about 8 months then just put it up on ebay. It sold for $51.75!
- Whippets, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4If you kept your headphones you made $20 on a used iPod. Nice.
- fliped, on 02/19/2008, -5/+1thats might be awesome, but how much did u pay for it in the first place.
- plosfas, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2The refurbished iPods are now listed at the same price as the new ones. I was really hoping I could snap one up for a good $30.
