iPhone 1.1.3 speed dial hack - no jailbreak needed
cre.ations.net — Nate True came up with this (semi) sweet hack that lets you add phone numbers as speed dial icons on your 1.1.3 iPhone home screen. It's no jailbreak, but the hack is clever and pretty useful. It also supports adding custom pictures for each number.

- audiowizard, on 01/24/2008, -1/+1leefernandes.com instructions on how to do this on your own server, has the actual script. You don't have to rely on Nate True's server.
- willynilly, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1The question is: Why in hell are contacts buried under the "phone" feature at all? What if you're not even calling someone, but rather looking up an address and then pulling up a Google map? It would make a hell of a lot more sense to go into Contacts, find someone, and then tap his phone number to invoke the phone functionality. Not to wonder, hm, what's the location of that restaurant, and then inexplicably have to go into phone functions to find out.
- itsbob, on 01/24/2008, -4/+25and I trust this domain with my speed dial telephone numbers because?
- milkmage, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9you don't have to trust him.. but if you RTFA, there's a warning: Privacy warning: Due to the nature of this hack, your phone will request this page EVERY TIME you use a speed dial icon on your home screen. I assure you I will not use this data AT ALL FOR ANY REASON. It is entirely possible to put a similar script on your own web server, which will do the same thing without sending me any information; that course of action is recommended if you are at all concerned about your privacy.
- itsbob, on 01/24/2008, -5/+1Good thing every iPhone user has a web server handy.

- likwidfuzion, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2Nate True is a well recognized guy in the iPhone world.
- audiowizard, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2Don't trust Nate True with your info, or anyone else. The script to run this from your own server is here: http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_1_1_3_Speed_Dial_PHP_ ...
- windfanatic, on 01/24/2008, -1/+2Yeah, you are right.. cause the world is dying to know what your speed dial numbers are...
Then again this is digg.. maybe I can take a stab at it:
#1 - Mom
#2 - Domino's Pizza
#3 - Ron Paul
#4 - The Apple Store
#5 - ...
Seriously though.. while I agree that we are all a bit too cavalier about privacy on the web sometimes.. I think there is a certain type of ego centric geek personality around that actually believes the world cares about what he or she had for dinner.. trust me... NOBODY CARES!

- masbestiaquetu, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7that Google 411 thing seems useful. but ditto itsbob, i wouldnt recomend putting in personal numbers here.
- RedS0x, on 01/24/2008, -3/+1What about if I want to put an alias of the contacts app on springboard? Going through the phone app is kinda indirect...
- Heidenreich12, on 01/24/2008, -2/+21Nate True and Erica Sandun should just be hired by Apple.... would make things go along alot faster
- markwilcox, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9Then we would have to pay $20 for everything they do
- shanthp, on 01/24/2008, -5/+3Who's in your 5?
- likwidfuzion, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Your mom and your 4 sisters.
- calgone, on 01/24/2008, -0/+13So you have to push two things to get a normal iPhone speed dial (Phone App and then tap the contact from your favorites list) or you can add this speed dial and have to push two things anyways (icon plus call button)?
- anonym41414, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2In all fairness, you can double-click the "home" button (the only physical button on the front of the device) to bring up your favorites list from anywhere in the UI. If the phone is playing music, double-clicking "home" brings up playback controls.
- uncleboogie, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12I just double tap the "home" button and then press the name I want to dial. No thanks.
- CroMag, on 01/24/2008, -17/+2Thank god for iPhones. Now that Humvees aren't as popular it's hard to recognize who is an ***** and who isn't. iPhones are just portable ***** badges that ring.
- Maloney, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6i'm sorry but i have an iphone, i love it, and you sound like more of an ***** than i am. you know... assuming people are assholes because of what phone they have is just childish.
- JackondaRocks, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4I may be an *****, but you're a lil' bitch. And yes, I love my iPhone.
- LeonardNimrod, on 01/24/2008, -4/+1Apple needs to make it possible to add speed dial icons directly from the address book.
- anonym41414, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3They did. It's called the "favorites" list. Double-tap the "home" button to bring it up.
- starf, on 01/24/2008, -0/+2This relies on being connected to edge or wifi. Much simpler to simply double click home to go to favorites and click on name.
- yonah, on 01/24/2008, -2/+1I have a few related questions I would like to have answered, if anyone knows:
If I update to 1.1.3, can I downgrade to 1.1.2 later (without any super-hacking)?
Should I update to 1.1.3 if I NEED to be able to unlock in a couple of months, when I go back to Norway?
Appreciate any help- anonym41414, on 01/24/2008, -2/+2You seem to have confused Digg with a Web forum.
- undersky, on 01/24/2008, -3/+1wow this is useless as i have to first CONNECT TO THE INTERNET VIA MY BROWSER before I can dial? If I am at a place without EDGE or Wifi then I am *****
- g00dbye, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Um...if you have the service to make a phone call, then you can connect to the internet.
- sneakerelph, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1...if for some reason you couldn't access the internet you wouldn't be *****... just click the name in your contacts list.
- undersky, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1that's not true. Minimum requirement for phone call is GSM, or edge or gprs, for data, you need GPRS or EDGE.
- jgarland79, on 01/24/2008, -1/+1Wouldn't it be easier to add the URL like this:
tel://+12183398069
or like this
tel://+12183398069?picurl=http://path.to/photo- simonvc, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1It would be but you can bookmark that link because as soon as you type it in it opens the phone app, and if you it cancel goes back to the previous page. And there is no way to manually edit a bookmark on the iphone.
Hence the need to book mark a page the redirects to the tel://number link.

- jpicune, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1What's wrong with the favorites list, a hell of a lot less work, same number of clicks. Besides, less chance of accidently calling people anyway.
- joshharvey, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1This adds the opportunity to add the "web clip" to the home screen... in other words a speed dial for your wife with a picture of her with one click.
- Electrox3d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1where did he get the icon for the link? did he make it or is it available somewhere?
- Electrox3d, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1NM - it eventually populated after I waited 5 minutes.
- springdial, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0For those with a jailbroken iPhone, check out my application that creates speed dials on the iPhone which does not have to launch Safari or confirm the call.

http://springdial.mineshaftgap.net/ - kheffner, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0For those without a jail broken phone, there is a nice app up on the app store now for one-touch speed dialing, called (aptly named :P) Speed Dial
