- Commodus, on 04/07/2009, -43/+454Before people jump in and criticize Apple: remember, the labels are deliberately putting the screws to iTunes, and not Amazon MP3, because it's the market leader. If Amazon got big, you'd see $1.29 songs there as well. And besides, how many Digg users are the kind who'd buy the $1.29 Black Eyed Peas track?
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -56/+448Anyone who buys top 40 crap deserves to be ripped off.
- TheCash, on 04/07/2009, -50/+267Looks like I'll be buying my music from Amazon now. Well done Apple... I was on the fence as to which service to use (itunes is easier for ipod users vs I prefer my music to be in MP3 format if possible) and you just made the decision for me.
- KSUdesigner, on 04/07/2009, -7/+187Is this standard practice for brick and mortar stores too? Do the labels charge WalMart more for an album than they charge Target? It doesn't really seem right to me that a company should be penalized because it is more successful than the rest.
Oh, and ***** the RIAA. - Barbarino, on 04/07/2009, -5/+176Kind of a bad time to raise prices don't ya think?
- Logal, on 04/07/2009, -12/+153I just did a little bit of searching and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from 1991 (!) is $1.29!!! WTF! This is *****. Also, a couple other songs on the Nirvana "Nevermind" album are $1.29. ***** YOU RIAA!!http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/ ...
- acknotSW, on 04/07/2009, -28/+167Anyone else find it amusing that a product which costs NOTHING to produce after the initial costs of creating the track in the first place is being treated as though it had a supply/demand component to its availability?
- Wreckage, on 04/07/2009, -4/+128I have bought songs from Amazon and they are exactly what I want from downloadable music. A simple MP3 file.
They even have full albums for like $4.99 on occasion. - megamod, on 04/07/2009, -18/+127Stupid labels are just screwing apple over...watch amazon's sales soar now.
- bs0l, on 04/07/2009, -27/+114Amazon Music Store > iTunes Music Store
- Meowbiusfox, on 04/07/2009, -5/+83Someone please remind me how the artists will benefit from this nominal gouging?
Answer:They won't. - g0thm0g, on 04/07/2009, -10/+85256kbps AAC is still superior to 256kbps MP3 in terms of audio quality. Most people probably can't tell the difference though and I for one will be sticking with Amazon.
Don't forget it's also easier to remove the digital watermark (if you can really call it that) from the Comments ID3 of Amazon tracks. - Jersey2FL, on 04/07/2009, -1/+75Record labels can't say music is not selling, if they can raise the price 30 percent.
- pathouston22, on 04/07/2009, -5/+77Oh, so if a good song is taken by public radio and then rammed into the ground, it suddenly makes it a crappy song?
- fluffyturtle, on 04/07/2009, -6/+75Cromulent742 - I swear, people are becoming music snobs more and more.
It's a personal taste.
I happen to like almost any genre and my collection includes songs that aren't even on the top 100 to songs that have been number 1 on the charts.
***** tool. - Refrag, on 04/07/2009, -7/+70Variable pricing is something that the labels have been harassing Apple about for years now. Apple finally relented in a deal that also meant all of the iTunes Store would be DRM-free. I prefer having all of the music on the store in iTunes Plus – I can easily avoid the premium priced songs (for now).
http://easeintotheswitch.com/mac/itunes-store-upda ... - michaelraiwet, on 11/10/2009, -25/+87Thank god for this act. People who think Lady GaGa, Beyonce, The All-American Rejects, Black Eyed Peas, make honest, pure music, with any real meaning at all, should be paying $1.29 for a song.
- Insolent, on 04/07/2009, -1/+62@feliks2:
Nobody, they just keep restocking their huge music sections because miniature black holes rip them off of the shelves into oblivion duhrrrr - FallenTurtles, on 04/07/2009, -16/+71Add this to the 3-foot-long list of reasons why I stopped buying from iTunes.
- roebeet, on 04/07/2009, -8/+59What about Zune Marketplace? <ducks>
- inactive, on 04/07/2009, -83/+133People still pay for music?
http://thepiratebay.org/ - cromulent742, on 04/07/2009, -17/+63I wish I could delete every other comment on this page and just leave yours.
- eramos, on 04/07/2009, -7/+53Wow, pretentio-meter off the chart. God forbid somebody listen to music/watch tv or movies for something other than the soul shattering art experience.
Let me guess: film or music major, right? - pathouston22, on 04/07/2009, -3/+45I'm not defending top 40, I'm defending the fact that sometimes good songs are hijacked by the mainstream.
- billricardi, on 04/07/2009, -0/+41As someone in this field, I can tell you that I feature Amazon music on my site just about every day. The instances where iTunes has a better deal are extremely few and far between. I'm an affiliate for both, but sadly iTunes almost never offers decent whole-album deals, while Amazon offers amazing ones on a regular basis.
- cosmotic, on 04/07/2009, -5/+45I dunno why people are digging you down... I agree, it's pretty silly.
- beesaretasty, on 04/07/2009, -2/+41Convenience is king, but since when is a 30% increase small?
- Logal, on 04/07/2009, -1/+38Well, the album is still 9.99. Which makes no sense. I would think after 18 years, it would be a little cheaper. Lame.
- UnbannedAccount, on 04/07/2009, -8/+44Apple creates new business opportunities for the labels, then they screw us. Explain why I shouldn't pirate music again?
- Shakermaker, on 04/07/2009, -7/+41LOL - yeah I bet you were really waiting around, twiddling your fingers, seriously debating on which digital music service to go with, and this totally sold you.
I bet you've never paid one red cent for a downloaded song. - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -3/+35DOUCHE-ALERT!
You know, Nirvana, NIN, Peal Jam, and Rage Against The Machine have all been at the top of the charts at one point or another too...
Does that mean they sucked too?
GTFO. - Rmo4, on 04/07/2009, -3/+34God forbid somebody listens to music because they like the way it sounds.
- thunderclap82, on 04/07/2009, -16/+45Don't go blaming Apple. This is all the record labels fault.
- QuackMasterDan, on 04/07/2009, -3/+32The labels are tired of dealing with Apple's success, though they themselves hate to compete, they desire competition between any and all online distributors (like iTunes, Amazon, and Wal-Mart) to create a more profitable deal for themselves.
- ibeetle, on 04/07/2009, -5/+33Thats what everybody said when Amazon got into the game in the first place. Then it was said again when Amazon offered so called better files. Then it was said again because they were, at the time cheaper.
(Right or wrongly; for better or worse) Apple is still number 1 and Amazon is number 4.
Remember when Wal-mart offered download even cheaper than Amazon? The pundits gave Amazon 6 months and Apple a year before Wal-mart regained the top spot in music sales. Wal-mart discontinued online music sales and Apple is and Amazon is still around. - ig88b1, on 04/07/2009, -4/+29Who the hell buys CDs from anywhere?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 04/07/2009, -0/+25Competition is good.
- dfross, on 04/07/2009, -8/+33Copyright violation is not theft. Get your definitions right.
(It's still illegal, it's just not covered by the legal definition of theft, and claiming it is just makes you look like a shill. You may as well say it's murder or GBH, it's neither of those too) - P522, on 04/07/2009, -0/+24They need to recoup the cost of initial production, then hopefully make a profit. So there is a supply/demand component. They are pricing it as high as the market can allow. What's worse is selling old music from years ago this way. There they have recouped the initial costs and made their profits, the artists have even died, and STILL the music is sold at as high a price as the market can allow.
- LawScholar, on 06/25/2009, -3/+27You'll get buried, but goddamn did that need to be said. :)
- TommyGunn32, on 04/07/2009, -0/+24'If Amazon got big'
Where have you been? - ThinkFr33ly, on 04/07/2009, -6/+30ZunePass all the way. $15/month for unlimited music streaming/downloads, plus 10 DRM-free tunes per month.
Have fun paying for files. I'll stick to paying for the service. - UMDirector, on 04/07/2009, -1/+24From a CNET article a bit ago....
Apple has stuck to a pricing system that charges a flat 99 cents for a song since iTunes started four years ago (except for the recent introduction of songs without copy protection, which carry a higher price). Jobs has long argued that a uniform system and low prices will invite new consumers and reduce piracy.
But some music executives have been chafing at the flat rate that Apple has insisted upon in its contracts with the big record labels, and they have been pressing publicly or privately for the right to charge Apple more for popular songs to capitalize on demand or, in the event of special promotions, to charge less. Edgar Bronfman Jr., the chairman of Warner Music Group, reinforced that idea at a recent investor conference, saying "we believe that not every song, not every artist, not every album, is created equal." - rm249, on 04/07/2009, -1/+24Amazon's MP3 downloader application allows you to automatically add your songs to iTunes if you want.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+25The people who rip it and upload it to the Pirate Bay for you.
- ibeetle, on 04/07/2009, -1/+23So, where is the $0.69 stuff? I spent about 10 minutes poking around the catalog titles. Songs that have been out forever by bands that have been around for years, if not decades. Everything is still $0.99.
I also see that only about a third of the new releases are the new $1.29. Why do I think in six months this will all be much ado about nothing.
Either Amazon will be forced by the labels to raise their prices, or iTunes will only be releasing very few titles at the new higher price. - inactive, on 04/07/2009, -8/+29LONG LIVE PIRATE BAY!!!!!!!
- cardyology, on 04/07/2009, -5/+26woman-izer-woman-izer-woman-izer-woman-izer.... etc...
