- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -18/+109Lyrics will only be for 'pop' mainstream songs. Indie and world music will miss out, as usual.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -17/+54How about a *WORKING* album art downloader first?
By working, I don't mean "Give Apple your credit card info and a whole bunch of other crap, only to have it download AFI's 'The Art of Drowning' as album art for every single song in my library."
Why is sfacets being Dugg down? He's telling the truth. - Genius16, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40Amarok does this already. If they ported it to windows, it'd so take over and blow the MP3 scene up. Best audio player, ever.
- hahanopants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25"... independent publishers and songwriters can register online for Gracenote's publisher program and have their lyrics made available through the Gracenote service. This is a breakthrough program, especially for smaller organizations and individual artists who can now participate alongside larger publishers to make their songs available to millions of fans and be properly compensated for their use."
- ToddFFW, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28Just get Amarok. iTunes is behind the times.
- GoodOlClint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20inaccurate.
Article says nothing about iTunes adding this functionality.
simply a sensationalist title - thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"I'm sure record labels, or perhaps ASCAP would sue companies (on the musicians behalf of course) that freely distributed their lyrics in a software package like that, without compensation."
amarok doesnt distribute anything. it has a script that pulls lyrics from a collection of a few different websites. amarok makes the software and lets the people who actually want to index lyrics all day do that. if apple were to do it this would be the ideal way but we all know they wont do that...
"like comparing Apples to Clementines. Mm. Clementines..."
if when you say clementines you mean linux, then you would right... mmmm... haha. - Caiman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This is interesting, I can see the 'Karaoke Edition iPod' in the distance already...
- NoNameHere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I would have to stab out my eardrums if that ever came to market.
- EvilDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wrote iArt actually, thanks for telling me...
- solracarevir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As genius16 told, amarok does this already, also rhythmbox show lyrics for a song, itunes is following the steps of open source creativity.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Yes its called going to Google and typing "{insert song here} lyrics"
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality
Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies
and see,
I'm just a poor boy
I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Little high, little low
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me
to me... - Narwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This is neat! Soon I won't have to trudge through the endless hordes of suspicious websites (no doubt housing a swarm of malware just waiting to be unleased lest you click the wrong link) looking for lyrics. Dugg.
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6winamp has a plugin for this already. but like people say, it covers the mainstream stuff typically.
- ezyeric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Um.. evilLyrics works good, http://www.evillabs.sk/evillyrics/ . Dont make iTunes more bulky than it already is.
- pinkgreenblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@sfacets
What's to stop the indie artists from freely uploading their own lyrics (possibly under a Creative Commons license)? I think everyone wins if they do that. - jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8It's not about having it in iTunes. It's about having it on your iPod, so as you're walking along listening to a song, you can look down and there are the words.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There are a few dashboard widgets. "Sing that iTune" and "Harmonic" both get lyrics. They will add the lyrics as a note on the song so you can see it on the iPod also.
- Ryanoffski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5http://www.lyricsplugin.com/ has a plugin for Winamp and Windows Media Player.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I gotta agree. I've used EvilLyrics for years, its not perfect, but its compatible with numerous players and is constantly updated.
iTunes isn't even an option for me with its bulky interface and huge memory usage.
iTunes memory usage: 280MB
Winamp: 8MB (13 with EvilLyrics) - TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Nice, now I can figure out the lyrics to In Da Goda Da Vida
- GoodOlClint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just because iTunes uses Gracenote does not mean that it uses all of its features.
iTunes, Real, Napster, and WinAmp all use Gracenote. This article says nothing about those applications adding the ability to lookup lyrics, only that it will be available to them - v0lrath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Theres a great program called iArt. It will run you about $10, but it works wonders. 90% or more of my collection has lyrics now. There are inaccuracies since it pulls them from user created lyrics.
- christo16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3PearLyrics: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26995 works like a charm
- rgodfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You all are missing the real killer application here: smart playlists based on lyrical content. A playlist full of love songs, a playlist full of songs that mention your girlfriend's name, a playlist full of songs about rainbows and what's on the other side... you get the idea.
- iMiXiMi, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3So 1 year later and.... uh nothing yet
- bubbabird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This says its just adding more Lyrics to its database. It doesn't mean that Apple will just add support because 10,000 more have lyrics available.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Harmonic widget.
http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/showcase/details.php?wid=1858 - slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4will it work for all the music you've stolen or only for songs you've bought on iTunes?
- hahanopants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it would take up much room. I have lyrics for the majority of my library of 9,000+ songs, and the lyrics did not significantly increase the file size. Figure it this way: 4k of text per song added to a 4Mb song X 4,000 songs = 16Mb of lyrics for 16Gb of songs.
It should increase your library size by approx. 1/1000th. - clinko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used the program from http://clinko.com for 5+ years now to get lyrics. The reason why? I wrote it.
It's pretty cool because it finds the lyrics from my db, then notifies me if there are any. Yes, this is spammy, but it actually is a good program. :) - c0nrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone know if there's anyway to purge the album artwork from itunes?
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Agreed, and freedb is positvely *not* evil - so use that where you can. Freedb (GPL) even allows you to run your own server if you want, the data is freely available.
http://www.freedb.org
Gracenote are evil. Avoid where possible. - fliped, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPod Karaoke anyone?
- mnetlucas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yea I thought of this the other day when I was adding lyrics to all my Queen Songs
- dtreese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is iTunes gonna get the lyrics for all the songs like it got cover art for all the songs? Can't wait to see the YouTube rants over that one.
- cwl157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea i got that winamp plug in too
- mistarojaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4people should get evil lyrics, its a great program, i have it set up so it displays the lyrics for any song that i play with itunes
http://www.evillabs.sk/evillyrics/ - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The now defunct pearLyrics program/widget on OS X worked great (and can still be found with a little googling - leave it open, run this script called Needle Drop ( http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts02.php ) overnight set so that it plays maybe ten seconds of every track in your library, and pearLyrics will auto-add lyrics to most of your tracks.
- Subcide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For ALL my songs eh? I'd love to see the lyric sheets for all the Fantomas CD's I own...
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@pinkgreenblue
And that's the purpose of the thousands of lyric wikis on the internet. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Were you looking for this?
http://digg.com/apple/iTunes_to_get_lyrics_for_ALL_your_songs_automatically_It_s_coming?creplyto=4573905#creplyform - hooges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second lyrics plugin, its great.
- DeaPeaJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iPod's already have the lyrics viewable on them
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember, and I submitted several transcripts myself. After the tragic applet appeared I stopped coming back.
These days Amarok does the job, though none of the lyrics scripts are perfect (Errors in character encoding, "kiss this guy" transcripts, etc). - Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had this with ability in winamp for a while with just a small plugin.
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait until Songbird launches... you'll switch
I'd have switched already but its still beta and they've got a bit of work to do - amk29j, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1So 2 1/2 years later and nothing yet!
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1won't this take up a lot of extra space? Hope we can stop it from automatically retrieving the lyrics.
