I guess it does in this case. BUT JUST THIS ONCE. - chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -11/+36"People still pay for music?"
I don't get it. I'd like to find some of these Internet tough guys that make fun of people for buying music, and take them to Best Buy. Let's see if they have the balls to shove a bunch of CD's down their pants and try to get out the door without paying. You think these pussies would have the stones to steal under those circumstances? Of course not.... Just because it's easy to steal music, doesn't make it right. - cvk_b, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Not really. Who does it beat out? "Title says all" implies that clicking the link would be a waste of time because ALL of the information is in the title.
- JeffreyLloyd, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29Why in the hell do you post descriptions like this? Just to piss us off? Do you think it's funny? Well? Do you?
Answer me damn it! - cautiousspade, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19its time like this i wise i had gotten stock in apple like 10 years ago
- CodyBrown, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Considering how easily this initial project was dismissed - this is an outstanding accomplishment.
Especially unbelievable because this market really didn't exist at anywhere near this level before iTunes.
Hats off. - gamesector, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The title doesn't say it all. I immediately wanted to know who was 1st and who was 2nd and the title included no such information!
- ismith, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Every time you post 'title says it all', god gives your masturbation to dead kitty count a x10 multiplier.
- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12The least the guy could have said was how much that is or when was it discovered or who is saying it.
The title never just "says all". - chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7 ... and to think they are going to add 10-million additional iTunes users in the next year
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think you might find they were massively successful before DRM-free music was added. You might even discover, only people on digg and related sites actually give a crap about DRM.
- ismith, on 10/31/2007, -5/+10Maurozea, you are a horrible, horrible person. The title does not say it all. If it did, then I wouldn't have to click the link. But I do. Next time, try something like this: "According to a NPD Group MusicWatch report for Q1 of 2007, covering the sales of both physical and downloadable music, iTunes beat out Walmart and Best Buy with a market share of 9.8%."
- ismith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You have the people who pay for music to thank for making it so easy to get away with not paying.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Duh, they beat out number 4... sheesh... what more do you need to know?
- roessnakhan, on 08/28/2008, -4/+8"Title says it all," has become a trait of the lazy rather than restating the obvious.
- vudicarus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't say Christutley is talking about the occasional music track between family and friends. I would agree with this digger that the whole-sale attitude of "buying is for suckers. i get my music free" is theft. If you purchase music and share a little, and make back-ups, that's one thing. But if you're mooching off others for your entire collection, and being proud of it? I say get a job. Earn your way to owning property.
- mt2d2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I've got to hand it to Apple (and not because I'm an Apple fan), but they've made music much easier for me. In fact, it's so easy that I spend way too much money on it! I am usually able to find what I want on iTunes, often times when the same CD isn't at a local store, though even better is how quickly all this happens. It has its fallings too, but Apple seems to at least pretend to want to fix them (EMI, iTunes+, etc.). Overall, it's been a good fit for me, and while it's not for everyone, it does its job well enough for a lot of people.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yes, ***** Apple for providing a convenient way for us to legally purchase music online and sync it easily to our portable audio players! You bastards!
- Spaceboy492, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3OiNK? What is this OiNK? OiNK doesn't exist! :|
Also, Soulseek > Limewire. - thekronz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Title does not say all.
What's #1 and #2? - WiseWeasel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3They're next...
- BrianMalcolm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2First and Second are Wal-Mart and Best Buy (in that order)
1. Walmart (15.8%)
2. Best Buy (13.8%)
3. Apple iTunes (9.8%)
4. Amazon.com (6.7%)
5. Target (6.6%)
(From http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/22/itunes-continues-its-climb-3rd-largest-music-retailer/ )
Perhaps "Behind Wal-Mart and Best Buy" would've been a better description than "Title says all....." - flipmoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I buy my music, but I'm not a sucker. I used to download through LimeWire, on direct servers (through apps like Hotline), even Napster back when it was free and not crap. What I found is that trying to find a free version of a song or album that I really wanted to listen to was a waste of time. I'd get crappy audio quality, mis-labeled files, incomplete albums. Tons of incomplete albums. I don't have time to search through some kids library to find one or two songs that I like.
What iTunes did was just make the process of finding what you're looking for dead simple. Who cares if I have to spring $.99 on a song, in the long run that's a better deal than wasting so much time endlessly searching. - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2what's the closest store to you that's open 24 hours, and sells CDs? theres your reason Wal-Mart is #1.
- nexus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4How does walmart get #1? They censor your music without a choice in the matter. If you buy from them you have no choice between censored or explicit albums. Its also the same reason Trent Reznor refuses to sell NIN cds through walmart.
- ismith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nonono... OiNK+Demonoid+isoHunt! Limewire's old man o.O BitTorrent is in.
- Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2without even reading the article, i'm guessing Wal-Mart is #1 (as they have been since forever), and i think #2 is Best Buy?
- ismith, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2go usenet? i thought you were gonna say the alley behind O'Reilly's pub to go see a man named "Bubba" who "cleans your tools for powder". huh weird
- HomieG6189, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The MPAA doesn't want to be screwed over like the RIAA was.
- Sethwm2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well.. For an example.. I wanted to download There's Something About Mary on iTunes because my friend wants me to see it and I have never seen it before. I went to iTunes and then the movie section to actually buy it. I typed in "There's Something About Mary" and it brought up Herbie: Fully Loaded. WTF?? So. My next option since we cannot get to the store to rent a movie was to get a torrent and download it illegally!! How does this help the MPAA??? I would have purchased it!!!!!! They just lost money!!
- Jcrain33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, you don't have to purchase the entire album to get DRM-free. You get a price break if you do, but it's not required. DRM-free songs on iTunes with a higher bit rate sell for $1.29 or you can still buy the whole album for $9.99.
And "why are the record companies stealing from artists?" doesn't give us license to steal what little the artist DO get by never purchasing music. Some occasional swapping? Sure, by all means. But I agree with vudicarus that you shouldn't mooch off of others for your whole collection and be proud of it. - Sethwm2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No... Torrents.....
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -1/+2Yeah, hate to break it to you but there isn't much more.
- ismith, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Oh, but I did have to click on it. DId I miss something, or did the title not say it all? Nevermind, that's a stupid question.
- shark72, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Another reason: they use predatory practices to put other retailers out of business. They sell CDs as loss-leaders. Wal-Mart and Best Buy got the ball rolling on the Universal/Tower Records price fixing investigation (Universal was giving Tower Records money to run a MAP program because Tower could not compete with Wal-Mart's loss-leader pricing), and now Tower Records is out of business.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No one would digg that. Keep it simple.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yes but DRM-free content is not going to un-DRM all the previously brought content that is DRMed already. Regardless there are rippers now that can remove the DRM from iTunes so no one is actually tied to iTMS DRM if they search on Google.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1All of those are a pittance compared to what is distributed for free on P2P networks. Not even close.
- Sethwm2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is sweet!!! I love iTunes!! I would just like to see more movies on there and more TV shows. It must be the fact that Movies are more difficult to licenses?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I don't know why you're being dugg down. but it seems that some people need a translation: due to the iTMS drm you can only play your music on the iPod music player. After you buy an entire library of music on itunes you will want to play that music anywhere you go and, after the years, even though you wanted another music player you will NEED the ipod to play it.
For the ones that didn't knew that the things are this way: Welcome to the DRM world. - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3The best way to think of it is stealing.
You are required by law to pay for having the item. Whether it's physical or not is largely irrelevant - there is a legal requirement to pay for it - and if you don't pay for it then you're stealing. - verbose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As more habitual album buyers take the plunge and buy their first song on iTunes, they'll realize the value over album purchasing. What surprises me is how low Virgin is. Isn't music sales the centerpiece of what they do? Speaks to the decline of B&M music sales overall.

The title is no catch. Here is a quote from David Byrne,
“Soon enough a site will open that is like a Google search for music downloads — downloads that are not copy-protected…“
Enter SeeqPod. SeeqPod works by grabbing music from wild, disparate areas of the Web and presenting them to you in one nice, easy, scrolling interface.
SeeqPod really is amazing. It’s hard to believe how much music is on the Interweb just waiting to be grabbed. From classics to indie you can find plenty of music in your preferred genre. The website provides the ability to create your own playlist that will play right out of your browser (using Flash, of course). The old version of the site would let you download the songs, but last time I checked that feature was removed. You may be saying, what good is tons of free music if I can’t download it? JASeeq is your answer.
Download JASeeq now, or continue reading about why you should.
First the obvious, JASeeq will let you download the files that you drool for from seeqpod.com
Other great additional features:
> Returns ALL of the results of a search. SeeqPod.com returns 9 per page by default. Paging to result 1,019 nine items at a time can get tiring!
> Uses download accelerating technology for FAST downloads. Since downloading at all is an added feature this is just icing on the cake.
> JASeeq ISN’T Flash-based and DOESN’T run from your browser. Some people think that running from your browser might be a good thing, but it’s really not. I usually have a browser open all day, and fancy applications running from one of its many tabs start to suck up RAM and/or just generally slow things down. Also, Flash applications tend to screw up the whole CTL-Tab switching between tabs. Having it as a stand-alone application keeps your personal workflow smooth.
You can also play the songs using JASeeq, although there is no playlist feature just yet (expect playlists in the next version).
http://modsyn.wordpress.com/2007/06/22/free-music-legally/#top - insomn3ak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah but then Digg thinks your just digging without reading and bans you =(
- dethblud, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I see that the title says it all I deduce that the story on the other side of the link says nothing but "iTunes now 3rd largest music retailer in US". If that is the case, I have no motivation to click the link. Additionally, I assume that it is lazy journalism on the part of iLounge (in this case), and feel that I should mark this as lame instead of digging it, because to digg it would be rewarding iLounge for lazy one line journalism.
Do you see what horrible chains of flawed logic your lazy posting could be inspiring in people? A better post might have listed one or two bits of info from the article, like "Walmart and Best Buy still hold first and second largest spots" or "Amazon is now #4". Hell, my second example is one less character to type than "title says it all", and far more useful. - brian1625, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, could of said. "iTunes reaches it's Target by surpassing Target. Best Buy and Wal-Mart now in it's sights."
or something like that. - Spacejack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No. ***** Apple for fostering the idea that it's the only possible way to do that. And ***** consumers for believing them.
- CRoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Every article is going to be summed up properly in the first one or two sentances. Copy and paste. Solved. At least that way we get a proper summery rather than some sensational headline and an "I'm to good to describe the article" title says all
