- Dalhectar, on 11/11/2008, -11/+72Are $5 purchases of old movies supposed to compete with free NetFlix streaming?
10 movies compared to 12,000
$5 per movie vs $9 per month
1 TV playback device vs 5
The subscription models looks much better to me in this case. A lot more movies, and a lot less coin. Even Apple's movie renting costs get prohibitively expensive with just a few movies per month. - dengar69, on 11/12/2008, -2/+40Great, now I can finally buy Police Academy 7.
- uknowwhoibe, on 11/11/2008, -6/+39Finally! It's about time they started doing this. There's no way I'd pay full price for movies that are 20+ years old.
- CalmLlama, on 11/12/2008, -3/+32still not worth it
- Rev0lver, on 11/12/2008, -12/+37rabble rabble baseless Apple fanboy retort rabble rabble

- cgomez, on 11/12/2008, -3/+19'The Karate Kid' for $5? How can I lose!
- monospaced, on 11/12/2008, -1/+15It's half Schwarzenegger films. wtf
- tidu, on 11/12/2008, -0/+13OT, when's that streaming pirate bay website gonna launch? That's gonna be wacky
- web2pointYo, on 11/12/2008, -1/+13SCREW YOU GIRLYMAN! It should be all Schwarzenegger movies! YA!
For 5 bucks you could watch me:
Cut a guy in half vit a chainsaw und den say "He had to split". Ha haa haa!
or maybe you vud like this that or the other thing and when Billy told me that joke about the ladies private parts and I laughed a big laugh! HAAA! HAAAA!! HAAAA HAAA! and de Preditor heeard it and recorded it and played it back later. And remember the time before that when I told that guy I vas gonna kill him last and then I killed him somewhere in the middle instead.
That vas a good one. Also it looks like you can get the one where I come back, because I said Id be back and I was trying to sav dat little boy and I said "Come wit me if you want to live", and now every freakn body is saying that, wtf is up wit dat? Anyvay, if you want to see a classic, check out the time I was real yung an bufft out and I has a big azz swuard and I ran around the country looking for de riddle of steel. and then I found it out and it was a bit of a disappointment, so I chopped off darth vaders head and that was the end of that one.
Yah yah anyvay, Der all good so just Vatch dem all! - inactive, on 11/12/2008, -1/+13Is this a joke? Seriously, stick with DVDs. Audio and video quality is superior, no DRM, is already burned onto a physical media and in the amount it takes to download a movie, is about the time it takes to drive (its a 1/2 block walk for me) to the local DVD Rental store for discount movies (4 for 20$). Its either pay 5$ for a physical DVD with almost no restrictions vs 5$ for a digital download with alot of restrictions on its use.
Even if it wasn't laden with DRM and was of a high resolution with AC3 audio, I still wouldn't buy it. For the reasons that, in the event of a financial emergency, if I need a few bucks to last until the next paycheck, I can walk to the pawn shop, get a quick loan off a dozen DVDs I own (enough for bus change or top ramen for the week). Cant do that with digital media. - jsauter, on 11/12/2008, -1/+13Trying not to judge here, but if you often don't have enough money until the next paycheck, perhaps buying DVDs and then pawning them for Ramen and bus change is not the best investment plan?
- HanSolo69, on 11/12/2008, -2/+14People buy movies on iTunes?
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -1/+12People buy?
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2008, -2/+12Are you of those few who still don't realize that Apple doesn't have any say in what has DRM and what doesn't? I thought most people already knew that.
- NathanielJ, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9If you willfully bought Gigli, then you deserve what you got.
- dpcamp, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9Hollywood really needs to figure out how to beat free and better quality...
- Miamisun, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9Something something Gigli something.
- Easyoffbam, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8?
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2008, -2/+10People?
- QuailOfDoom, on 11/12/2008, -4/+12The Quail Of Doom is glad this has finally happened.
- AdamKernes, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8especially because half those films are played on cable every night for free.
- asgardshill, on 11/12/2008, -0/+8So you're the one.
- Spidey99, on 11/12/2008, -2/+9P?
- mserna23, on 11/12/2008, -1/+8That's why I still shop for movies at best buy, target, and Wal-Mart. DVD, with cover art, and bonus features for $4.99. Can't beat that. We'll see when iTunes library grows.
- amneosis, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7....tonight on 60 Minutes
- asgardshill, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7"Man who can catch fly with chopstick ... desperately need get laid."
- NHeerDesign, on 11/12/2008, -1/+8...but not in Canada. Shafted much?
- diggitalism, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7@ AmusedToDeath
And the reason it's like that is because the companies basically GAVE Amazon DRM-free contact to penetrate Apple's massive hold on the market. This way the record labels can basically have more say when they bargain when the contracts are up.
Apple benefits, yes, but at the same time Jobs was basically pushing for DRM content. - AmusedToDeath, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7Well, if by free you mean after the $70+ a month cable bill, then yes, they are "free".
- rolf, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7Mr. Miyagi, what exactly is this that you are teaching me?
- merreborn, on 11/12/2008, -1/+8You've gotta give iTunes one thing: they invented commercial-scale digital music sales. They got the contracts with major labels that no one else could get. They sold RIAA member companies on a sales venue that was totally unproven at the time.
However, they've fallen way behind in the last few years. They missed the DRM-free boat (while they have some DRM-free content, it's minimal), beat out by Amazon's MP3 store. Now they're losing the online video market to Netflix and Hulu.
Apple's either gonna have to start shaking things up again, or go the way of the dodo. The only thing keeping them in the game at this point is iPod+iTunes tie-in. - iignotus, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7I see what you did there, but it's few not food.
- vault, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5eh?
- Mujokan, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5¿
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5You must have one of those cable movie packages where very movie ever made is on its own channel.
- leontes, on 11/12/2008, -1/+6I already bought Gigli at full price, can I get a refund?
- merreborn, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Agreed. Why pay $5 for a DRM-encumbered download of a decade-old movie when you can get the actual DVD (which you can then back up) at Wal-Mart for the same price?
It's a step in the right direction though. If they can get some movies from less than a year ago at this price, then we'll talk. - virtualball, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4I dugg you up for effort.
- aserer511, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4pirate's bay still a better value :P
- Jusman95, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Hopefully they'll start paying us to follow the law
- inactive, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5Yeah, its called "Getting laid off from a good paying job". Perhaps you'll get the opportunity to personally experience this in the coming months?
Most of my DVDs were bought when I was making 25$ per hour back in 1999-2001. I was in my 20s, didn't own a car, no kids and had roommates, I was buying DVDs by the fistful. All that changed when the dot.com bubble busted and I was laid off.
I don't buy many DVDs these days. My collection hasn't really changed in 5 years. - indochris609, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Instead of digging down my bad comment, digg up this good comment!
- BarryChuckle, on 11/12/2008, -1/+5you forgot the one where he is a cop, teaching kindergarten kids. oscar winning material.
- Antialias, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4With netflix, netflix streaming, hulu, cable video on demand and the host of other online legit ways to get movies it hardly seems worth it to own movies any more. I can count on 1 hand the number of movies I've watched more than 2-3 times so I just can't see the reason to own a bunch of movies. Might be worth it for some though.
- jake8689, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4how about not charging for music videos, i know it's stupid with youtube and all but it would be nice
