- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If it happens, I'm going to go back through Slashdot's archives and find the post I made several years ago predicting this (and the responses that mocked me for it too.) Everything was pointing toward an eventual movie store and still does. They were introducing great new codecs for full screen movie playback in Quicktime. They were doing movie trailers, almost as if they were testing the pipes for delivering video. They were introducing things like Airport Express to broadcast your music to your stereo. Then the iPod video enhancements and being able to connect it to your TV for slideshows. Then music videos and TV shows.
My guess is this. Initially, it will be a download to watch on your computer screen, but ultimately, it will include options for porting the movie around on your iPod to watch on other computers or TVs, and you will also be able to broadcast it to your TV via some variant of the Airport Express. - jflint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That would actually make sense to release a 16:9 video ipod on the same day that a movie store is announced, since that is the format the movies would be available in.
- Schroder3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Full-length movie+weak battery life=angry people
- mxpxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3if they charge 9.99 will you buy? i say yes, i would, anything over probably not
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe you emphasized the wrong part, your headline should read...
iTunes movie store MAY finally be introduced during Feb 28 Event.
at this point EVERYTHING is pure speculation. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Question: Why do they still call it "iTunes"? Shouldn't that have changed by now?
- ckohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe there is a greater-than-50 per cent chance they pulled the "greater-than-50 per cent" number out of their ass.
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hello, i'm Shaw Wu and I pull statistics out of my magic ass!
films would be nice though. pricining is the big factor though - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know what would REALLY be great (but would never happen because the MPAA is greedy)? If an iPod video file was included on DVD's, so you could watch it in high def on your home screen, and lower def on your iPod. What a great world that would be...
- Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can already "Rent" movies via the bog pond movie download service (http://www.bigpondmovies.com/) but it utilizes WMV and MS-DRM which deletes your file after a single viewing!!
- GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now if they could come in clutch with the HD content while everyone is fighting over blu-ray and HD DVD
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Why do you all think it has to be fore the iPod... my iMac is 20" and could use some movie loving, as could anything the Airtunes broadcasts too (TVS)
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In that tiny ass format? No, I wouldn't buy. If the content is High Def, then maybe.
But the prices must drop. $1.99 for a 3 minute music video is ridiculous.
And if they charge more than $5.99 for a movie, forget it, I will keep the parrot on my shoulder instead. Arrr, screw you and your high prices, matey! - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they'll release a video ipod at the same time if the do release movies for itunes. It seems logical to do so.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ummm can you say VONGO.COM already beat them to it?"
Ummm... there was a guy selling books online before Amazon too. BFD. - cualexander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I personally don't think the fabled video iPod is going to come out this soon. I just personally feel that it would widely be considered a bad move.
Also, what about all the 4:3 content that has already been purchased on iTunes. Why would you want to buy a new device that isn't going to take advantage of that content you already purchased.
It would almost be like they were abandoning the current iPod with video users if they were to release a new one so soon.
What this February 28th event will be about is going to be Apple Computers dealing with Intel Macs.
I think all this iPod that cooks me breakfast in bed stuff is just nonsense. I mean the TV shows and short clips like Strongbad Emails and Music Videos make sense on an iPod.
For movies, either buy a portable DVD player for $99 or buy a laptop people. Who needs movies that fit in their pocket. I just personally don't feel that this is the way Apple is moving.
What I think would blow everyone out of the water is if Apple released a full-sized Tablet. That would be way cooler than a snazzy new iPod. - Nodnetni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I love it when people are proud of the fact that they steal, and feel that they need to point this out to honest people by telling how they do it. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another prime example about how apple fans think Apple invented everything on god's green earth and that every idea that comes out of the company is completely unique.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BITTORRENT
- bamcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not really a first for iTunes either. My feature length film (P.O.V) is already available in iTunes (listed under the Podcast section though).
- prcpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ZOMG CAPS LOCK.
Anyone see this?

Hey, if Dvorak can get away with it, then I can too. :^) - Mutifus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hope that it makes it to the UK!
We haven't even got TV shows on iTunes yet.
*sob* - Aslan72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06900 mp3s + like 8 or so videos + podcasts = no freakin room on my hard drive for 500MB crappy quality m4v full length movies = apple giving us terabyte arrays to store all this crap on? :)
--pete - danboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK this may be and iTunes first, but its not an "Internet first".
See a nice matrix grid comparing many existing services... legally play movies on your media center home theater, portable player (WMV), or your PC, etc.
http://movie-download-review.toptenreviews.com/
These include CinemaNow, MovieLink, Vongo, MovieFlix, iTunes, and others... - h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and I'll wait for Netflix to come out with Video Download... iTunes sucks.
- manningbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0don't you people stay up to date on apple rumors? it was rumored that they'd release movies on iTunes awhile ago, so don't act so surprised.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm hoping the Feb 28th announcement focusses more on Intel Mac mini and iBook/MacBook rather than new iPod/iTunes stuff.
- h2d2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How's this world's first?
I have been renting movies online (for download) for years...
vongo.com
movielink.com
cinemanew.com
starz.real.com - funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Uhh.. you can already download movies with Vongo. It's not great, but"
The problem is, it needs to be great, otherwise the movie industry will not back it. - phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://movie.apple.com/
will be error - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oooooh... full length movies in 320x240!! No thanks.
- Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about you, but I watch movies on my computer all the time. Its too much of a pain to go to the living room every time i want to see a movie. and having them in iTunes would be way better than searching for a DVD.
You guys talk about watching movies on an iPod. Haven't you ever watched a movie on a PSP? same concept. its not that bad. yer face is real close to the screen so it doesn't make that big of a difference.
And you want to watch it in the living room. go ahead. you can burn Cd's for iTunes right? who's to say that we won't be able to burn DVD's? and even if we can't. what else do you use iDVD for? - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you actually looked at the selection on Vongo? I couldn't find a single movie I would watch so I uninstalled it.
- RadicalBender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would also like to point out that the occasional bits of "feature-film-length" television content already available in iTunes (Best of SNL, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, etc.) have been priced at $9.99. I would say that Apple is definitely grooming people to eventually accept that price for feature film downloads (if/when that happens). So, anyone wishing for $3 or $5 or whatever, don't hold your breath. I'd be out and out shocked if Apple could find a way to pull off that price.
Think about it, why would movie studios pillage their own lucrative DVD sales? - diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would not pay over $5 for these, and i still don't own an ipod. i'm waiting for the full screen before i get interested. i've lived without one this long and certainly can continue to wait.
many dvd's are $5-$10 so if they charge over $5 I would just buy the DVD instead. - NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well it seems pretty good, I would definitely buy the movies off of iTunes, it my most favorite media player with built-in music store program I have used so far. So, that would be nice and the battery I know doesn't last too long but there's always an additional battery pack to attach to the iPod or iCel battery packs that give extra 200 hours. So, if you really want to watch videos on there buy a battery pack and stop complaining. If you don't want to waste 50 or more dollars on what I would call a "Necessity", then stop complaining and use the video part of the iPod to watch something else. But they should give iPod users a complementary battery pack if they bring it to an apple store if this "movie store" is true. Because they will get a lot of complaints which will probably bring them down a little bit. That's just my opinion, don't complain you whiny bitches.
- Nodnetni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"inkswamp...so several years ago you made a prediction and now that it is finally POSSIBLY coming true you are going to claim vicotry?
Sorry, but there is a statute of limiations on predictions involving technology. 6 months is the cutoff. And that is being generous.
I sure doubt that when you made your predictions you said "By early 2006, Apple is going to introduce a Movie Store.."
Now that's funny.....
No one seems to agree with me that the media box showed last week would be a good fit to download movies to rather then an just to an iPod Video, why doesn't anyone like my idea!!!!!! - tmod4eva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Going to
http://www.apple.com/movies
Gives you a "403 Forbidden: You don't have permission to access /movies on this server."
where as trying to go somewhere else on the site i.e. http://www.apple.com/google
Gives you a "looking for something on apple."
Interesting... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must say that when I hook up my iPod video to the TV and watch TV shows, the quality is excellent. Granted, it's not so hot on an LCD because of the higher resolution. Nonetheless, this seems like a simple problem to fix. I hope they release movies... I'll be there to buy!
- GGERG15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would be awesome cambrown99!!! nice idea.. never would happen though
- colincsl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***For those that care, ABC just has a short segment about the person who got the billionth itunes download. It was a 16 year old who downloaded "Speed of Sound" by Coldplay. It didn't say too much.
- Jams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought such a thing already existed.
- phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what is more interesting:
http://movies.apple.com/
will lead you to the apple front page - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cliff, my man, how the hell are you the one with all the hottest articles? You da Man!
Oh, and if Apple begines offering movies for download, I'll buy all my flixs from iTunes. Music, I only buy CDs. But movies with a new video iPod!?! I'm hooked!
Please Apple! - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, hurrah, imagine the soaring beauty of Winged Migration at 320 x 240. In your pocket.
Like listening to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue over a telephone.
Of course, people would buy it for the same reasons UMDs sell. But when will we have an online video store for the HTPC crowd?
Imagine a Netflix with no discs. No queue, no waiting, no throttling... All you can watch for $17.99 a month, downloaded in a couple of hours.
I can dream. - acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool and all. But it isn't news it's just speculation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, once and for all:
This is a social news Web site. This is no editing process. If you like a stoy, digg it, read it, comment on it. If you don't like it, move on to the next story.
Why don't people understand that? It's what makes digg unique and, in my opinion, vastly superior to slashdot. - matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My movie store thepiratebay.org
