- representDLV, on 10/31/2009, -10/+38Apple is still trying to make Apple TV work?
- Perk, on 10/31/2009, -3/+31Palm's next trick:
Make the Pre report as an Apple TV with firmware 3.0! - Shuk, on 10/31/2009, -4/+22Just make it reasonably snappy on Windows PLEASE!
- PhillyMJS, on 10/31/2009, -3/+21Palm needs to just stop trying to stir up contoversy and taking the lazy way out, and build their own sync software that uses the XML copy of the iTunes database-- just like at least two other third-party sync applications do, because that's the sole reason iTunes generates it.
- tjex, on 10/31/2009, -6/+18Nothing is stopping Palm from creating their own software to sync with Apple. What Palm is doing goes against the USB conversions and shouldn't be done if the first place! It's not just Apple that's telling them not to do this.
- poochg3, on 10/31/2009, -7/+18Works just fine for me.
- Cam_86, on 10/31/2009, -1/+11Its a losing battle though... Nettops are getting smaller and stronger(they are already the same size as the apple TV, and stronger) and XBMC is slowly becoming more mainstream and even easier to install.
Even If you're a die hard apple fan, unless you have a bunch of DRM'd apple tracks theres no reason to pick up the apple TV over a XBMC nettop.

I'm still rocking my XBMC Xbox, since i still occasionally play a few games(and dont have a HDTV in my bedroom) - TitsMageee, on 10/31/2009, -4/+14Then Palm should work out an agreement with Apple:
Palm appealed to the USB Implementers Forum in an effort to have the iPhone maker's practices reversed. But the USB-IF instead sided with Apple in September, noting that iTunes' method of identifying Apple devices was within the consortium's rules.
The USB-IF also reprimanded Palm for violating the group's rules by improperly using Apple's USB vendor ID to have iTunes recognize the Pre as an iPod.
"Under the Policy, Palm may only use the single Vendor ID issued to Palm for Palm’s usage," the USB-IF said in a letter to Palm. "Usage of any other company’s Vendor ID is specifically precluded. Palm’s expressed intent to use Apple’s VID appears to violate the attached policy." - HeizeusX, on 10/31/2009, -2/+11***** YOU DOLPHIN
- dustinmacdonald, on 10/31/2009, -6/+14They block the Pre because it's not an iPod. iTunes does not support other devices using its sync system, nor should it have to. When someone else (Palm) can hack into that system, it's considered a bug; so they fix it.
- inactive, on 10/31/2009, -2/+10Even though I'm not a anti-Apple fanboy/Palm-fanboy or vice versa this really needs to stop. Palm and Apple need to come to an agreement: either Palm makes their own music player or work something out with Apple because I don't want every fifth article about Pre/iTunes syncing.
- pikelet, on 10/31/2009, -4/+12The problem is that instead of doing what every other phone manufacturer does (write a simple sync app that reads the iTunes XML database), Palm are breaking the rules of the USB consortium by using Apple's USB vendor ID to imitate an iPod. Apple is not obligated to let 3rd party devices interact with iTunes - it doesn't even have to provide the XML database.
iTunes support (which you define as letting the phone directly interact with iTunes) is not crucial for Mac users. The current method is perfectly acceptable. I have a BlackBerry and use Desktop Manager for Mac (which syncs with iTunes via the XML database) and it works without the need to do underhanded things like faking a vendor ID, which will piss off Apple *and* the USB consortium.
Not to mention, it is entirely unfair to the end user to deliberately engage in a game of cat and mouse, which happens to break the user's device/workflow every time iTunes is updated (which is well within Apple's right to do). Palm is trying to prove a point, not provide the best service for it's customers, and is screwing them over in the process. - phookade, on 10/31/2009, -3/+10Apple cannot allow Palm to keep synching as an iPod lest they want to lose the ability to improve their product, which is what Palm may be up to.
If Apple does not stop this, Palm (and others who would surely follow in their tracks) might one day have a case that by tolerating this, Apple OK'ed it and breaking it after what could be years Apple would indeed be using unfair business practices. Apple needs the ability to change the protocol if they ever plan on implementing new features eventually. By tolerating Palms practices, Apple would let Palm eventually dictate what Apple can and cannot do with the iPod synch. Therefore, Apple simply *has* to stop it, again an again.
Palm is quite sleazy here and Apple simply does what it has to do in order to protect their ability to innovate.
Screw you, Palm. - pierrelourens, on 10/31/2009, -7/+14...but iTunes is Apple's product. Apple's product is the iPhone. The Palm Pre is the iPhone's competitor.
Do you see where I am going with this? Business isn't about making friends and avoiding "dickish moves." It's about winning.
Besides, the only dicks in this situation are those at Palm -- who think that Apple would be a-ok with the Pre syncing to iTunes. They could have made their own software. - explodingzebras, on 10/31/2009, -2/+9How about not making me download around 88MB every time the Apple bods tweak a couple of little things?
- A11YND, on 10/31/2009, -9/+16I didn't even know the Apple TV still existed.
- DarkShroud, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6I'd rather they use try using the Zune software sintead of WMP. Maybe even try to sign a contract with MS for Zune Pass support.
- TheoWelles, on 10/31/2009, -2/+8This is my biggest complaint about anything apple updates... They make you re-download the whole program again, and it's just ridiculous. Every iPhone update, security fix or a new feature, is 300 megs, every iTunes fix, is 80 megs. As a person with a ***** internet connection (Australian), its just an annoyance, and it means most of the time I just leave most of my apple software out of date.
- topgigmedia, on 10/31/2009, -0/+5I have an apple TV and love it! It does exactly what I need it to.
- aristotle0dude, on 10/31/2009, -0/+4They did.
Google "iTunes Music Library.xml". RIM uses it to sync with iTunes using their own software. Palm could have done the same but were too lazy even try. It is dead easy to write the code to read the XML and copy the files from the paths contained right in the XML. From there, it is just a matter of syncing up with the palm device.
There is also the "iTunes COM for Windows SDK" located on this page:
http://developer.apple.com/sdk/ - CraigHwk, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3Dear Former User,
We don't give a ***** about you. Good day Sir.
Love,
Apple - MScrip, on 10/31/2009, -0/+3Unless you read gadget blogs... the average person doesn't understand this cat-n-mouse struggle between Apple and Palm.
The first time (4 months ago) that a new Palm Pre owner's phone *stopped* syncing with iTunes... they stopped trying. Then probably found another solution anyway...
If you're a tech blog reading Palm Pre owner with a hard-on for iTunes... these updates might matter to you.
But I imagine most Palm Pre owners don't give 2 ***** about this... or even know what it means... - KibibyteBrain, on 10/31/2009, -1/+4You don't even need that. I bought a new midrange TV this year(I hadn't had a dedicated TV for a few years), and it can stream TV from my PC's media library with no external hardware. This is becoming a mainstream feature. The format offerings are not as rich as I'd like, but if we can do this today, I'm sure in a few years the concept of having to hook a box up to your TV to let it connect to your computer will be unthinkable. And it still supports more formats than AppleTV does before hacking.
- Fireman17, on 10/31/2009, -1/+4Just shows you MS has something right Apple is still in the 90s when it comes to updateing anything making you download the whole program again...
- dustinmacdonald, on 10/31/2009, -6/+9Because having your sync break every iTunes update is real user friendly. Palm needs to get a clue.
- aristotle0dude, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3Here is a message for Palm. Stop being such lazy bastards. Use the iTunes library XML file like RIM and other have to sync with iTunes files.
To get you lazy bums at Palm started, here is some useful info on the file:
http://www.brainbell.com/tutorials/XML/Digging_Int ...
It is dead easy to write the code in Java or C# to read the XML and copy the files from the paths contained right in the XML. From there, it is just a matter of syncing up with the palm device which you fools should know how to do already.
There is also the "iTunes COM for Windows SDK" located on this page:
http://developer.apple.com/sdk/ - kelchm, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2It's just a hobby.
- DJRobX, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2I haven't noticed that iTunes is much different on Mac vs Windows. I find them to be pretty equivalent, with the exception that iTunes for Windows doesn't have the ability to add scripts to the UI. iTunes for windows is COM scriptable though, so it's still pretty good in that regard.
- krisrm, on 10/31/2009, -2/+4Why in the world would anyone wanted to use iTunes, given an alternative (especially on Windows, ugh)?
- aristotle0dude, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2 Dear ratboneusa,
Your pants are on fire. You never bought an Apple product in the first place.
Love,
Apple - cuervoman914, on 10/31/2009, -0/+2http://www.oldversion.com/
- brandonthebuck, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2The AppleTV 3.0 update also kills Boxee. Downloader beware!
- sinembarg0, on 10/31/2009, -1/+3got a mini, put boxee on it. does 1080p just fine, in pretty much every format i've tried.
- chockster, on 10/31/2009, -1/+2The Studio Hybrid does 1080p as well, but my TV doesn't. I looked at the Mini- considerably more expensive than the Studio Hybrid, zero benefit.
- ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Ah, Palm Pre also got censoring fanboys. Now, that is a iPhone killer for sure :)
- frouse, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1You might be the only person with that problem. Don't assume we all have that ridiculous issue.
- krisrm, on 10/31/2009, -3/+4I'd even settle for bearable on a quad core desktop...
- ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1It is not the case, check the packages and try to get a clue before commenting on iTunes. Yea, it is a single DMG but it installs way different on multiple (3 total) OS X major versions.
- ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1It won't be snappy until iTunes X, a complete rewrite which will possibly use native Windows widget subsystem. I don't have any insider information, it is just where things headed (based on Safari 4/win).
What Apple does is complete legitimate too, it is just that layer of Windows GUI subsystem sucks... They simply trigger the issue. There is no hack, conspiracy or anything. Windows hates the way they make custom (Apple) interface. - topgigmedia, on 10/31/2009, -7/+8your loss.
- eljitto, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2The thing is, there are only 2 Palm Pre owners.
The concept of the phone was ok, but the only thing that stands a chance (and a slim one) against the iPhone is Android and all of the phones associated with it - chockster, on 10/31/2009, -2/+3Bought an AppleTV. Put Boxee on it. Got fed up, sold it, bought a Dell Studio Hybrid from their Outlet Store. Awesome. I've now got XBMC with an option to run Hulu Desktop, automated torrent downloads in the background, it does everything in 720p without issues (AppleTV would stutter unless you put all files in h264)... it worked out to about $100 more, but so much more worth it.
When they finally upgrade the hardware of the AppleTV it might be worth it- the idea is great. - bipolar, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1p.s. We don't give a ***** about anyone but Benjamin Franklin and Satan, actually, so don't feel too bad about it.
- kelchm, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Do you really think they are being lazy?
It was MORE work to reverse engineer everything and make it work like it does [did]. - ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -0/+1Some sickos there must be thinking it is great PR to be on the news, as company who costs 80MB/week (x2, x5) to Apple user profile.
Don't laugh at me, laugh at them. I really think it is the case.
Dear PR guys at Palm: Stick with Caffeine, please. - Boondoggle, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1Ok, not lazy, stupid then!
- SirBruce, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1I'm not, it's a very common problem frequently reported.
- johnnyrotten, on 11/01/2009, -1/+2Go to a playlist. Click the first item and press the delete button. Press delete again. You now have no selection. What happened, iTunes developer?
- ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -1/+1Perhaps they should find a way to BSOD OS X whenever Palm Pre is plugged and trigger a fast kernel update from Apple. Now that will make 5x more headlines for sure.
I am not kidding, what they do is not very different in eyes of Apple owners and especially system admins. - ilgaz, on 10/31/2009, -2/+2320-400 MB of iTunes updates for a company who claims to make smart phone but can't read a freaking XML file... They also opened the door to el cheapo manufacturers to abuse USB identity. Soon we will see $2 junk mice acting like a Logitech to abuse its control center software, Logitech will do some DRM like crap in return.
All these years, I have never thought some company can "act like" another large company on USB layer. Some no name clone manufacturer perhaps? -
