- iHung, on 11/13/2007, -2/+38The way it should have been all along!
- ChrisRX, on 11/12/2007, -2/+22Why would anyone want a full song as their ringtone?
Surely the person ringing you would just get annoyed at you while you sit there enjoying the music. - dallyp, on 11/12/2007, -5/+22My iTunes still says that v1.1.1 is the newest software for the iPhone...
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -2/+8thanks, apple!
- kodybryson, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7Well, the way it _should_ have been is that you just make a ring tone from any audio file without having to pay for it or change file extensions. But this is a step (back) in the right direction, at least.
- optophobia, on 11/12/2007, -0/+6Here are step by step instructions on how to create your own FREE ringtones using the updated firmware
http://freeitunesringtone.blogspot.com/ - FTLJohnson, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6No, it was genuinely a user who likes their product... who owns an iphone... and wanted a ringtone creator... So I guess all advertisements are no longer ads for you. That's gonna suck... I prefer hearing about products from people who aren't being paid to sell them... any IDIOT with half a brain could have checked my profile to see if I'm a legitimate digger before doing the typical douche maneuver of mindlessly digging me down... Is it really that ***** bad to recommend a good product to diggers because you think they'll like it if they are reading a relevant story? Sure spam is one thing... and spammers suck... but legitimate recommendations are being dugg down now too? That sucks ass.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5***** I just imported 3 ring tones on my iMac
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5yeah, fine, you don't want it. whatever. thought i'd post it anyhow,..
- Xanium4332, on 11/12/2007, -2/+5if that wasn't an advertisement then neither are adverts...
- OdinEye, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3"Most Phones"?
I had to hack my stupid Razr in order to put my own ringtones on it. Yes, the phone is technically capable of using them, but my Cell company had blocked that capability (I'm supposed to buy my ringtones from them, don't you know), requiring a fair amount of searching and effort to find a workaround.
I only wish it had been as simple as changing an extension and importing into iTunes. How about you provide some actual documentation to support your contention that "Most" phones allow this. And please keep in mind that the capabilities of the phone as allowed by the carrier - not just what it can do coming from the manufacturer - since the former is all that the majority of end-users will actually experience. - kevinmotel, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2what is it? george gershwin's rhapsody in blue?
- macslut, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Ringtones are also Alarm tones on the iPhone. It can be pretty nice have a long song fade in for a couple of minutes or so to way you up. For actual ringtone use, it really doesn't matter how long the song is. It doesn't affect how long it takes to go to voicemail or anything.
- antoniojvr, on 11/12/2007, -1/+3test successful.
- nfxmedia, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2You hold the Option key down, not the CMD key when you click "Check for Updates" or "Restore" for Mac.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/12/2007, -7/+9btw, get the 1.1.2 firmware file here: http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.in ...
then, when you click "Restore" in iTunes, hold the Shift hey (windows) or the CMD key (Mac) and you will be able to navigate to the file location and select it. - kingkilr, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2Heh, on my jenky-ass Sony cellphone I have one song that is 16 minutes long and uses all available memory, yeah it's my ringtone.
- 37prime, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2The iPhone Bluetooth Headset is still working on mine. yes it's running iPhone Software 1.1.2
- the_snitch, on 11/12/2007, -3/+41.1.2 hasn't been officially released for US iPhones yet. The software is on the servers for Euro iPhone restore purposes only.
Me thinks the hackers have jumped the gun by assuming that the US will get identical firmware. Why hasn't apple released it already? I bet they are patching the holes and tightening it up, and lucky for apple, they already know exactly what the hackers did to get into 1.1.2 because the elite team has already posted unlocks and touchfree activation apps. doh! - Mizzike, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1To correctly do this--at least on my machine running XP--is to delete the AAC version of the ringtone from iTunes *before* you add the renamed m4r back in. Otherwise, it seems that iTunes will not add it to your library or Ringtones list.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/12/2007, -3/+4thanks, apple!
- MadOtaku, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! There's nothing to it!
- grey580, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1The tutorial forgets to mention that the .m4a file needs to be converted to aac in Itunes.

- natenovs, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2audacity works well too. i use it with my sony ericsson. bu then again, i can just drag whatever file i want onto my phone, no itunes needed.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2@nfx
oh, oops... guess that's why it wasn't working for me, lol... - extant59, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1yeah.. it'd be nice if you could make your own text message sounds :)
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1Some songs need a number in front of the track name to show up in the custom ring tone section.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1Seems to work....But My iPhone will only show one custom ring tone at a time. Does anyone know how to add more than one?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/12/2007, -6/+6download it here http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.in ...

- Relm13, on 12/28/2007, -0/+0I still cannot get my iPhone to play the ring tone. I have it in the list of custom ring tones. I select it as my custom ring tone, BUT when I have someone call me to test. It just uses the default ring tone. Has anyone actually tested there ring tones. or do they just think it works cause its on the phone. I cant get it to work and its on my phone. Yes its under 30 sec. Anyone able to help me???
- varuzh, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0I see the custom ringtones in the Ringtones "playlist". It seems like they got transfered over to the phone too, but I don't see them on the phone itself when I browse to the Ringtones menu. Any suggestions?
- Toltime, on 01/05/2008, -0/+0Did you make the song your default ring tone, you said you set it as your custom, make sure that it is also default, and make sure in your contacts that the person who is calling you has that ring tone also
- XXringer, on 01/25/2009, -0/+0For them who are looking for downloading ringtones, try the following links, I've found much interesting things there.

- irenedakota, on 11/12/2007, -5/+0My Sony Ericsson W850i can do this with any type of music or video file on any length that the phone supports (including m4a and mp3 and wma).
I don't get whats the big deal about the iPhone - FTLJohnson, on 11/12/2007, -9/+4For windows, I have found the ring tone creator made by the folks over at Efiko Software http://www.efksoft.com/ have made probably the best and most straightforward ring tone creator / loader out there, and they have been consistently keeping up with updating their software as apple has released updates for theirs.
- inactive, on 11/12/2007, -9/+3Or how about Goldwave?
http://www.goldwave.com/ - inactive, on 11/11/2007, -7/+1Great way to get people to stop jailbreaking...NOT
- virtualball, on 11/12/2007, -8/+2Say what you want about TUAW, but I am LOVING the iPhone hack updates. Not only are they on a very regular basis, but Erica writes them so anyone can read them. It's refreshing to see the end user being updated all the time.
