- kalleC, on 11/16/2008, -0/+42do copyright laws apply in space?
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/16/2008, -4/+33This article is from March...
- MCA2142, on 11/16/2008, -0/+27Just another guy trying to avoid the RIAA.
- primalsteel, on 11/15/2008, -1/+24actually it is the first time they took with them a docking station for the iPod!
- thebigpaul, on 11/15/2008, -1/+21An ipod shuffle shuttle?
- sweintraub, on 11/16/2008, -4/+19this is an oldie
http://www.9to5mac.com/ipod_a_space_oddity - twodollars, on 11/16/2008, -0/+9Idiot, its an iPod.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -1/+10THIS IS GROUND CONTROL TO MAJOR TOM!
- doiveo, on 11/15/2008, -0/+9That makes two docking stations on the station.
- Murdats, on 11/16/2008, -0/+8in other news the RIAA is pressuring governments to get stricter copyright laws implemented in space.
- MCA2142, on 11/16/2008, -1/+9That is why they are in a space ship that blocks out radiation.
- TheZorch, on 11/16/2008, -1/+9Uh, this won't be used in direct vacuum dumbass, it'll be on the shuttle and space station which both ARE rad shielded. Idiot.
- candysweet4u, on 11/15/2008, -1/+8No stopping the ipod is there!
- BZWingZero, on 11/16/2008, -0/+7Pretty much any electronic will work in space without radiation hardening. But without the hardening, it won't necessarily work that long before being burned out by the radiation.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -0/+6How old is this?
- wolfshawk, on 11/16/2008, -0/+5They better not leave that in the window when they dock. Somebody might smash the window and steal it!
- ok4you, on 11/16/2008, -1/+5Massively cool ............ dude
- primalsteel, on 11/16/2008, -1/+4Firstly whats with the user name-translated PIG TROUGH
Secondly I have clearly stated in the post and replies 3 times now they sent up a docking station for the ipod that was sent up on the previous unmanned mission!! READ! - browwiw, on 11/16/2008, -1/+4thank you Professor Bummer McDouchebag
- primalsteel, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3good one.LOL
- melak, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3I have read both the article and your comments. It's nice to know they sent up a dock for the Ipod, but this article mentions NOTHING about that, and you have yet to provide even a link to an article that proves that. Just posting cnn.com doesn't count, you wanted the article on digg, you need to do the legwork and get the right link. As it stands now we've got an old article from march and your unproven claim.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Lithium batteries are far more prone to problems than alkaline. They've been known to melt and explode under certain circumstances. Not good in space, even if the chances are extremely remote.
- cran, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Apple consumerism is just consumerism.
- BZWingZero, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3The rechargeable battery built into ipods isn't certified to fly in space. Standard AA batteries are so they convert the ipods to run on off the shelf AA batteries.
- techpr, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Wow this is OLD!, not from the current Endeavour November 2008
- nick041, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Does nobody here see how badass this is?
The guy was probably like, "I'm gonna just put this on the dashboard, right here. What? Time for a space walk? Ok, let me just grab my iPod that I placed on the dashboard of the Endeavour, which is the spaceship that is circling the planet in space, which we are on right now. No, I don't have the band Orbital on there." - srodolff, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2That's not an iPod. It's an upgraded computer module for the aging shuttle. More powerful than the computers it was originally launched with.
- candysweet4u, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2I dont read this submission as stating its the first Ipod I read it as the poster said its the first dock for the Ipod ,do you people even read before you post comments? I did read its the first docking station for the ipod, March 15th was an unmanned mission and if you read they wanted to test the reaction of the batteries and components- cnn.com
- rmwhite, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3If you CLICKED on the pictures you would see they were dated March 15, 2008. This current mission isn't the first one the ipod has flown.
- BigT383, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Little known fact: the iPhone 3G was specifically designed to handle up to three times the force of Earth's gravity.
- inactive, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3You're one of those specails attention whore kinda persons, aren't you?
- sfacets, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2Maybe ThePirateBay could host their torrents from space... hmmmm.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/16/2008, -1/+3@ primalsteel, Where does it say that this is an update? I can't seem to find it. The only reason I mentioned how old it is, is because I remember this exact picture (I think it was from Digg the first time I saw it a few months ago).
"When the unmanned Jules Verne spacecraft launched earlier this month."
wikipedia: "Jules Verne was launched into low Earth orbit atop the maiden flight of the Ariane 5ES carrier rocket. Lift-off from ELA-3 at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana occurred at 04:03:04 UTC on 9 March 2008." It doesn't seem like they did a real good job updating.
And I don't see why you are bringing cnn.com into this, as there is nothing in this article that leads there or any of their articles.
Edit- I think I finally figured out what is happening. The update is in your description. So basically we are digging the last sentence of your description? I've got to bury this now. - junkneo, on 11/16/2008, -2/+4Old NEWS + iPod whiner + Apple fanboy = iDouche.
- MCA2142, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2@ mrdiggdude.
Just as in people's houses. All things electronic emits EMP. That is the reason FCC requires all electronics sold in the U.S. to be shielded by a EMP shield. Hence, electronics have metallic shells, even inside those with plastic outer shells(Foil).
But it's still safe to be around, and they DO function. If you were right, all electronics would be unsafe. - antoniojvr, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2What's sad is that due to the accelerometer in the new nanos and iPod Touch/iPhone, these cannot be used in space without much frustration.
- Rapter09, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1"Getting an iPod into space isn't easy. The lithium batteries have to be replaced with specially certified alkaline batteries. Once docked, crew members can't bring them on board the Space Station, however, since they haven't been certified as safe in that environment."
They're not allowed to bring them on the ISS anymore? I wonder what happened there, or what concerns caused them to stop that. ESA astronaut Tom Reiter was listening to a iPod Photo in the Zvezda module on the ISS during one of their cardio tests way back in 2003. I remember seeing the picture. - mondoman89, on 11/16/2008, -1/+2old news is old...
- thealsir, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Or iDiot.
- digginamish, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1This picture was labeled a hoax last year. And yes, it is the same image. I think the thing that killed it was when someone found the size of that window and determined that the scale was pretty far off.
- grizzlelegend, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=30xamua&s=4
- jgzman, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Point the first: there is no such thing as an unmanned shuttle flight. Other spacecraft, sure. Not the shuttle.
Point the second: I saw ipod-in-shuttle images some time ago; months if not a year.
Still cool, though. - shadowmanjack, on 11/16/2008, -2/+3Who the hell is Christina McBride? Perhaps they meant Martina McBride?
- greggerm, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1Exactly - Endeavour and the ISS haven't even docked at this point. (Although they are in visual range, 9 miles)
- matt.rubin, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1they need to mod them and make them work of off AAs though to take them on the ISS. This article was from awhile ago.
- Jezper, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Stop ruining my digg browsing experience by posting duplicates.
- dullnation, on 11/16/2008, -1/+2Why did they send an iPod up on an unmanned mission?
- primalsteel, on 11/16/2008, -3/+4If you READ its an update , first mission was unmanned! where the ipod was sent up! this one they took the docking station for the ipod up with them, www.cnn.com.
- andrewlotta, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1I would have been so curious of what was on the iPod.
- payrow, on 11/16/2008, -1/+1Why alkaline batteries....???
