iPod vending machine.....Running on Windows?!
machinetricks.indieword.com — This group of 'hackers' have found that iPod vending machines are actually running Windows. That's right Windows. The article describes how they came across this little exploit, and what they've been able to do with it so far. I bet it won't be long until we'll be able to grab free iPods!

Open the file open box...
"C:WINDOWS(forward-slash)notepad.exe"
Find the file that is being used to show the menu's etc... sure for logging reasons that it will most likely be hosted on a server built in to the vending machine... look for the index.html (Php... asp?) File... Open it in the notepad box and go to where it has the prices... change it to 0.01, file... save.
Just saying. I haven't tried it since there are no such machines around here but eh... =) - snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -106/+19@fintheman,

- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yeah, that guy is being a jerk, but there's a problem with the whole phone number thing. If I don't like you, I just come here and spam with links to *your* site, and you'll get a bunch of lame calls even if you didn't do anything.
- gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7911 was not a conspiracy, Christians aren't terrorists, and Jesus will not return in 2025. Is that everything?
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sadly it's not a hack or an exploit. Like any vending machine they always make it easy to access other things through the same interface customers use. Look at the coke machine hacks on google video. I never understood why they don't use some kind of physical key to enable access to hidden menus.

@fintheman -- It never ceases to amaze me how anti-patriotic some military people are. Didn't you swear to defend the constitution from all enemies, foriegn and domestic?
Yet whenever someone points to evidence of a domestic enemy, people like you threaten violence against them.

Actually, it shows that Zoom Systems, the company that owns and maintains the machines (a company, incidentally, that has no affiliation with Apple whatsoever) chose to use Windows for their interface.

- flameboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20there are plenty of potential holes that come with gaining access to the file system
heres an example:
browse to taskmgr.exe > run
kill vending software and run explorer.exe
find vending software and configuration files
modify configuration in files or registry (set price?)
reboot machine and see what happens
Just one of many hypothetical scenarios. All it would take someone with a hacker mindset to spend a few minutes with it and I am confident eventually a significant hack would be found. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21> It shows that Apple has more faith in the reliability of Windows than

It's funny that you actually think most Mac users give a ***** one way or the other. Hint: most of us don't care. Don't assume the few loudmouth zealots posting pro-Apple trash from one end of the Internet to the other speak for all of us. Seriously. It really gets tiresome the way people like you think Mac users are zombies or something. Get over it already.

- ElumEnopee, on 10/12/2007, -37/+11Why don't they call these "hackers" what they really are -- thieves or at least thief wannabes.
Why is it justifiable to "hack" a vending machine to give you something you didn't pay for be it iPods or Cokes. Maybe the lowlifes who "hack" a pair of jeans into their backpacks use the same justification.- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5RTFA...
Hint-- it's not (directly) about stealing - ElumEnopee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I did RTFA. I know the article does mention stealing per se but this is not the first article about these machines lately. If you don't think think the first thing that comes to certain peoples minds is "Cool! Free iPods!" then I think you are either blind to the facts or one of ones looking to take advantage.

You're so right... we should not make this information public and popular so the companies don't find out and ruin the fun. Brilliant! You are one smart thief ;)
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5RTFA...
- ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4We've all read the stories where Apple is able to track stolen Ipod's that connect to Itunes, I wonder if they are able to hack these machines and get free Ipods, how long before the police show up at their doors.
- aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6We haven't all read those stories because they don't exist. The only thing that would happen is you probably wouldn't get a warranty on the iPod.
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I worked for Apple. There are no systems like this for ANY Apple machine. They can't even FLAG a machine stole and call the police if the thief calls in. The most they can do is log a case with a title something like "iPOD WITH SERIAL # STOLEN" and even then, it'll most likely be overlooked AND Apple has no policy about not supporting stolen iPods.
- swansong24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Ya, i admit it. I am a wannabe thief and i like free iPods. Im such a lowlife.

- sfmman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24What the hell does Apple have to do with this?
- rbvmusic, on 10/12/2007, -36/+8Maybe because iPods ar emade from apple?
You'd think a company would use their own program to run their vending machines. - DDRcasey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36The vending machines have really little to do anything with Apple, sure Apple supplies the products, but doing a simple search you can find that the vending machines are run from a company called Zoom Systems. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- deadbeatpoet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Apple has nothing to do with these vending machines.

- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Fun fact: shut up
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Why is this a surprise? First things first, this vending machine is not owned by Apple, nor does apple have anything to do with maintaining the machine.
The vending company buys iPods from Apple....that's the only role Apple has in these machines- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's also funny that apparently some people around here expect these things to run on Macintoshes. That just doesn't make sense. You can build an extremely low cost entry level Windows kiosk machine like that for $100. Or, you could put in a $1800 Mac. Even if you used a Mac Mini, it's 5x that. Hmm, for a vending machine, that's a hard decision..
- axemachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Lumiras
Because macs are the best and wouldn't a mac mini be designed for this? I guess the cost efficient myth is just that. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2macs are the best for some purposes, but point of sale kiosks aren't one of those purposes. There is a lot of kiosk software that exists for Windows, so it's a great deal more cost efficient for vending machines to use a form of embedded windows.
Again, like I said before, Apple has nothing to to do with the machine other than the fact that the company buys iPods from apple to put in the machine.....their involvement stops there

You are exactly right. Zoom Systems makes vending machines for everything, it just so happens that they are the best machines around for ipods. Apple does not have anything to do with the machines.- Kyoushu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Except they supply the products.

- eliezerlp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the handheld swipers/registers ...not the registers, everyone knows those run OSx and one of the only two POS systems for mac
- monkeyod, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Big deal...did you know that the Dell catalogs (and the vast majority of all Advertising) is done on Macs?
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Almost all ads are done on macs.
A long time ago - in the 90's - when a new Pentium ad came out showing some cool (for the time) 3D animation of a fly-through of a computer, the ad was done on a PowerPC-based Mac.. there was a big deal about this in the mac community... The program they used to do it was Electric Image Animation Studio (EIAS) which was a very nice program at the time. - theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And most video editing back then was done on Amiga 4000's with the Video Toaster. At the time, the Amiga kicked the ***** out of both Mac's and PC's. Many public access TV stations still use Amiga's to this day. Many of your local Cable TV info stations are still done with Amiga's, as well as the local weather warning crawl at the bottom of TV screens. Many Babylon 5 episodes were rendered on Amigas.
Kind of pathetic that it has taken damn near 10 years for Mac's and PC's to catch up to what the Commodore had been doing all along. It was a real shame that the company tanked the way it did. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yes... everyone thank god for the Amiga, otherwise we wouldn't have ever known such classy things as the star wipe or the windowblind effect. ;-) Public access stations using a product today isn't exactly a big claim to fame. Hell, my high school used an Amiga for its closed-circuit TV station, but I wouldn't go shouting from the rooftops about it. ;-)
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"And most video editing back then was done on Amiga 4000's with the Video Toaster."
Yeah right... The Video Toaster wasn't able to produce broadcast quality video, hence it mostly was used in cable access TV stations and third world countries. NBC, ABC and CBS etc. never used it for anything they broadcasted. I remember how easy it was to spot something edited with a Video Toaster, just by the image quality and those cheezy pixelated transitions.
As usual, the Amiga is overrated by its nostalgic fans. It was sure a good deal for the money and could do many things a low-end B&W Mac couldn't do, but don't fool yourself, there was some compromises. - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't be rash. Video Toaster allowed you to edit video on a computer without spending tens of thousands. It's something that took Macs and PC's years to catch up on. It might not have been full broadcast quality but it was decent, and STILL good enough for all the web video trash out there right now.
The Amiga was way ahead of it's time on many levels and you'd be ignorant not to accept that. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cbreaker:
What I was disputing is the statement that "most video editing back then was done on Amiga 4000's with the Video Toaster." This is simply not true and I stated reasons why, like the fact that it wasn't broadcast quality.
Sure the VideoToaster could be used for tons of other cool things like student projects etc, I won't deny that. But that statement was simply not true and it's not the first time I've see an Amiga fan overrating their platform like that. I've seen people stating that the Amiga could do real-time ray-tracing and other crazy things like that. This is not particular to Amiga fans, and I don't blame them for defending the platform they loved, I just felt like setting the record straight about this.
Like I said, the Amiga series certainly were a good deal for the money, and they may have been underrated by many, but they couldn't do everything a graphic workstation or high-end Mac could do at the time.
And I'm sincerely curious to know, aside from the memory-protected multi-tasking aspects of the OS and the Video Toaster add-on, what was way ahead of its time on the Amiga computers? Seriously, I'm interested in the history of computing, and I'd like to know...

- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15That's no big surprise.
Everybody knows that Windows works better for business applications and banking, while Mac is better for video processing, animation, and all the other creative stuff.- danr, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6I hope you are being sarcastic...
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I agree. Whether it "works better" or not is debatable but it comes down to the fact that Windows is more entrenched in the business world so that's what you use regardless of your preferences, and that goes for Apple too. Microsoft reportedly uses Macs to design their packaging, and the advertising firms that do its print and television ads probably work on Macs too. You can't really make any superiority claims on that basis. It's just that, once you get into publishing and design, it's a Mac-based world and you'd be a little foolhardy to charge into high-end professional work using Windows.
I'm curious that anybody even cares what Apple's vending machine runs on. It's really irrelevant. They didn't manufacture the damn thing. It's like getting all excited because you bought OS X from a store running their cash registers on Windows. WTF? - adc86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@inkswamp

- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hacking isn't illegal... A hacker is a someone who programs for non-malicious reasons. What you are thinking of is a "cracker". A cracker is a hacker that codes and programs with a malicious intent.
Just letting you know :] - the1wraith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You are a moron Saint07. What we are doing here is as illegal as reading the newspaper. Freedom of speech *****. I can write whatever I want about you or the FBI [though given it is illegal to threaten you] I will just say that as a hacker, knowledge is not illegal, how you use that knowledge is. For example, firing a hand gun. Perfectly legal to know how to use it, and shooting someone in self-defense is as well. As is testing it by shooting targets. Just like many hackers test systems legally. However, shooting someone for fun [or without permission? O.o] is illegal, just like hacking a system without permission is.
Woo. done.
Cheers,
wraith - aminorking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0People hack opensource programs to make them better and develop the code. Are they illegal? There code even be a hack in the Digg code to make it more efficient.
- RaDiKaL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just because we dugg it des not mean we have bad intentions :-
- albatross5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hmm, this website "machine hacks". The absolute only thing on this site is this little story about clicking the floppy icon on these machines.
- jake13jake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know of an ATM machine that runs on Windows... hmmmmm
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Many ATMs run Windows NT 4.
- ChuckAndBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Do these machines accept quarters?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'd hate to be behind the guy purchasing an 80GB iPod with quarters.

- djj3w, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3I would never do my banking on my windows machine. i have 5 macs in my room for that! :) and besides... why hurt your eyes when managing your money? And possibly an aneurysm while windows is crapping on your lap!
- adragons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Operating systems are not the cause of identity theft/phishing, the user is. Macs are nice, but they still don't compensate for your ignorance.
- Briankb68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"we found that it is possible to browse files on the machine using a simple hack. Clicking on the floppy icon in the top left corner of any image brings up the file explorer window."
So clicking an icon is now considered "hacking"?- danr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haven't you ever seen "The NET"?
- flessa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0where the hell are apple vending machines?
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Apple vending machines don't exists. These are Zoom's
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Two words.. Erm one portmanteau: SafariStand
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes cause Windows is an overbloated yet highly workable and compatible OS.
- jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Probably 25% of the Windows 90% market share is made up of vending machines, airport terminals and cash registers.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And dont forget the other 25% that are gamers
- Torbar203, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Nothing really that interesting. These aren't "iPod Vending Machines". They are vending machines that sell electronics, and have iPods in them. You don't call circuit city an "iPod Store" because they have iPods. They are not run by Apple, so this should be in the Security section, not the Apple section.
Also, machines running Windows isn't big news at all. Lots of computer controlled vending machines, ATMs, and even those little rides for little kids that you see outside of supermarkets that you put a quarter in and they move back and forth(Yes, some do run Windows. I saw a bluescreen on one of those).- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A lot of embedded systems still run OS/2, as an interesting fact. It was widely popular with Banks and ATM machines. Sears used OS/2 for years for their ticket-based stock retrieval system for a long time, not sure if they still do. I guess OS/2 is pretty stable, without too many bugs (there's not much to it) and secure. And lightweight. Go figure.

- dinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad you can't right click...
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2open up the on screen keyboard in the accessories menu, then press the menu button. right clicking on a touch screen.
thats the way i know, but theres probably another way too. - eliezerlp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So now lets combine the right clicking from the touch screen and the save dialog and see what we get.
Anyone up for a trip to Macy*s?

- plsailboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you do know that you can select to open the my pictures folder on the local machine, from there you can access the system.
- Anubis2051, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18You know whats funny? last week in the article about the Video of these machines at macy's (http://digg.com/apple/Short_Video_Of_iPod_Vending_Machine_At_Macy_s) I commented that "The funny thing is the machine is probably running windows..." and I got DUGG DOWN! - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What? Why is he being dug down? It's the truth - you wouldn't put a Mac in a kiosk. It doesn't make financial sense.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apples are $1.99/lb at my local grocery store.
- ebs16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm surprised that no one's commented on the fact that the interface is WEB based and is running in INTERNET EXPLORER. - dave1021, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7"...once you get into publishing and design, it's a Mac-based world and you'd be a little foolhardy to charge into high-end professional work using Windows."
As a graphic designer specializing in Windows (and making a very tidy living at it for the past ten years), I hear that ***** a lot. Usually just before the dinosaur steps into the tar...- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Amen brother. I don't consider a PC inferior to a Mac for graphics, video, and audio. Not for many, many years now. Every software for either system is either available on the other or has an equivalent. Movie studios use mixes of Windows and Macs for their Avid editing, or all PC's, or all Macs. It really doesn't matter. You can use whatever you want to use and you can get the job done.
PS. Until Apple switched to Intel chips, PC's were actually quite a bit superior to the Mac in terms of performance for the last few years. Ohh yea, and a lot cheaper.
I like MacOS (using it right now) but I don't like the unadulterated zealotism about it.

- AngryBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought we knew these things ran Windows awhile ago...?
Anyway, here's a picture of an error message on one of these things. You can clearly see the Windows path "C:..."

Real professionals are aware of alternatives that don't leave their respective asses hanging out for all to kick.
Serves them right.- mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5and real professionals don't post my space pages on digg under a bunch of different user names. I don't live in NY but I bet that there are a lot of diggers who do and wouldn't it suck ass if your web life met with your real life.
- etechonline2002, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've hacked many machines all over California with simple hacked like this. most of the time of you mess with the mechine for a while it will restart to clear the system and when it restarts you have about 30-45secs to execute your hack. to get into the task manager and stop there software from loading then using the task manager to open and explore window to use and your leasure. most of the time you can use the mechine for as long as you want once the kiosks software has been stopped from starting up but there are a few that you will see that you only get 5 mins or so to do some part of ur hack then it will restart then u can continue.
- Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Something of interest to me, it says on his site "hacking since 1999", which implies that the site has been around for that long, yet this is the only story on the website. Perhaps, this was taken from somewhere else?
Despite how interesting this story is, I don't feel comfortable digging this. - proliance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you watch the Apple commercials then you know that Windows is supposed to do boring things like run a vending machine.
- bubut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0UltraVNC Single Click allows you to turn on YOUR VNC listener as a service, and setup YOUR router for incoming connections. In just a few steps, you can create an executable that people put on their desktop (I stuck it on my website so that they can download it at any time). When they run it, it prompts you to accept the incoming connection. You have to open up port 5900 on your router, while they have to do nothing, because it runs over port 80 for them. Also, its great because they don't have to install anything. I use this almost on a daily basis. If anyone needs help with this, IM me (via AIM) at bubut29.
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Who carries around that many quarters, anyway?
- Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Duh, what a stupid point to bring up.
Why did it take a group of "hackers" to figure this one out, and why is it such a big deal. The Ipod Machines aren't run by Apple but a 3rd party retailer company.................. -
