- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -19/+91I spent $20 on the iPod Touch upgrade and now I can't pay my house payment. My wife is talking about leaving me. My kids haven't eaten in weeks. How could you, Steve Jobs? How could you make a device so revolutionary and then turn around and like, try to get money for it? I know you're a gazillionaire, living in a Pod capsule in the Jobs mansion in Cupertino, but twenty dollars is a lot of money to regular folks like me. That's like a quarter tank of gas. That's like 2 lattes at Starbucks, plus change. I don't know what I'll do this week. Hell, I don't know what I'll do tomorrow. I'm thinking about going to the bank and trying to get a loan, maybe put up my 2 Mercedes and my foreclosed house as collateral, but something tells me that it won't be enough. That twenty bucks has just totally ruined my life.
And by the way, I've just sent multiple SMS messages to all my friends, offering my kids as slaves! Offers are already arriving through the new e-mail feature. Thanks for nothing. - Wailord, on 01/18/2008, -1/+46Uh, very poorly written description...what the submitter's _trying_ to say is that if you bought your touch AFTER December 31st, you can get the apps for free...maybe.
- cwalk, on 01/18/2008, -7/+36Apple TV got a free software update. iPhone got a free update. iPod Touch users have to pay $20.
***** apple. If they don't want to give me this update for free, I will take it for free. - beerbarron, on 01/18/2008, -11/+36This is like iLife, its free if you bought it with your mac, or you pay for the upgrade. Please dont confuse this with an update, its new software.
- REUYL, on 01/18/2008, -1/+20Forgive my dumb question, but is it possible to "alternately download" an update like this and install it via other methods?
- DreKor, on 01/18/2008, -0/+15You could probably hear him better if you were reading this in Safari
- Azimuth1, on 01/18/2008, -2/+16What was that? Sorry, I couldn't hear you over the music I have playing in iTunes.
- stlcadet11, on 01/18/2008, -0/+12I like your terminology. I recently checked a pirate ship for answers but I found nothing.
- jonshipman, on 01/18/2008, -0/+12They copy and pasted it from the iphone to the touch...
- gaqua, on 01/18/2008, -5/+17If only the iPhone had MMS capabilities, then you could email pictures of your kids to your friends when you offer them up for slavery. Everyone knows that auctions without pictures don't work.
- MadKennyP, on 01/18/2008, -0/+12"Moot."
- jonshipman, on 01/18/2008, -0/+10did you check the bay too, or just the ship?
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -8/+18Greedy Apple, greedy Steve Jobs
- Firehed, on 01/18/2008, -2/+11Sure. Jailbreak your touch and grab the apps from a filesystem dump from an iPhone. I'll send you mine if you want.
- therethere76, on 01/18/2008, -2/+10Wait a second...Sony has been adding new software and features to its PSP and PS3 firmware for a long time now and guess what? It's always been free.
- irgeorge, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8Underline. Doesn't seem like you've been on the internet long ...
- RedS0x, on 01/18/2008, -1/+9Here's the only thing...
A lot of people are saying that the iPhone and Apple TV got major software upgrades for free and the iPod Touch didn't. Well...that's not true...1.1.3--same as te iPhone--is free. It's the iPhone apps that cost $20. - pax85, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7It's principle, not the amount.
- drlha, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7"...then you could email pictures of your kids..."
Its MMS that the iPhone lacks, not the ability to email photos. You can email all the photos you like with the iPhone and you don't even have to pay for it like MMS. - idesign, on 01/18/2008, -0/+7I have been silently wondering this myself... anyone?
- masterc, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7I can't hear him either - I'm too busy typing in Pages and making a presentation in Keynote.
- Legolover64, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6It's NOT like buying iLife. iLife doesn't add operating system functionality, just additional programs to use. iPod touch users who want to use the new webclip or screen rearranging features NEED to pay Apple the $20 to get that. That's like paying for OSX 10.5.1 if you have 10.5 or paying for XP SP2 when you already have XP. It's them gutting their customers because they can.
- directive0, on 01/18/2008, -2/+8Oh sure, everyone thinks Nazism is fun at first but then they all cry foul when somehow it gets out of hand.
- aladrin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+6I was considering an iPod Touch when they first came out... Now I'm very glad I didn't buy it. And now I continue to not buy it because maybe the next 'update' will have more apps that I cant live without... or maybe they'll charge me to use the SDK... Or who knows.
This was a very bonehead move and has definitely made me think twice about buying Apple products. The guys at work almost had me convinced, too. - ftyuv, on 01/18/2008, -3/+9I don't dispute that Apple has the right to charge $20 for this new functionality. On the other hand, I don't think it's a wise move -- or one in line with what I'd expect from a top-level MP3 player.
When I was considering buying the Touch, there were certain features it didn't have that I wanted -- some of which are included in this $20 upgrade. I bought the Touch anyway, assuming in good faith that as an early adopter, I would get free upgrades as Apple hashed out the product. Without that assumption, I likely wouldn't have bought the Touch, and I may have looked at other vendors altogether. Next time I go to buy a device, I'll know not to make that assumption. So, while Apple has a right to charge me for each upgrade as it comes out, it should know that doing so may make me look to other vendors.
I understand that Apple doesn't have any legal obligation to provide free upgrades, and I can see the argument that it doesn't have a moral obligation, either. On the other hand, they should understand that people expect a certain level of follow-up when they pay a premium for top-level gear. If Apple doesn't provide that follow-up, it gives people a second thought about paying that premium. - gaqua, on 01/18/2008, -2/+8Actually, they can charge whatever they want, and if we pay it, they look smart.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6It's weird that people actually bought Zune 1.0.
- Pic0, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6It isnt the price, it is the point or the idea. Apple makes you pay $20, MS gave the Zune a free update.
- Spelvin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5man, can you believe that Dweller wants $20 for that comment! He should be giving his comments out for free...
- phoomp, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Thankfully, Microsoft isn't as greedy as Apple
http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/13/zune-2-0-update ... - virtualsnyper, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6Yep, http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php ...
- iZealot, on 01/18/2008, -1/+6How about it's not right that Apple crippled the iTouch in the first place. Then they have the balls to hold said functionality hostage for a $20 ransom.
- TomFrost, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6Dude, I friended you because I thought your service was hilarious, as I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi myself occasionally. But seriously, enforcing copyright and trademark symbols? Jumping on conversational-style writing and slang usage? I think you're taking it a bit too far. It's definitely crossed the line of being hugely annoying instead of the minor hurrah it once was for those of us frustrated by people who can't distinguish between homonyms.
- TechCF, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Sony still updates the PSP with new features for free! And that one has been out for ages..
- virtualsnyper, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4I don't think money is the issue here, though. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's not because if they did in fact buy a 300-400 dollar mp3 player, 20 bucks ISN'T a lot. The fact that the software was stripped from the original binaries (iPhone) and then sold back to iPod users is what irritates many people. Personally, I could care less, but convenience isn't worth that much to me. Until the SDK is release my iPod will remai JB. Cheers
- figster983, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4This site brings up a valid point. Take a look
http://www.asktechnicalsupport.com/2008/01/ipod-to ... - phoomp, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6If everyone sits down and takes this, Apple will start nickel-and-diming us for every little thing. They're probably already looking at how excited OSX users get over something as little as a 10.5.x update.
- mrbutter, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4this is so ***** ridiclous.
Apple can blow me. I paid 400 dollars for my touch, they're not getting a penny more. I'm not updatign to 1.1.3 until it gets jailbroken, and even then it should be EXTREMELY easy to then add the new maps/stocks whatever to the touch.
I already have the first versions so im sure the new ones will get "leaked" as well. Just have to wait a while.
Apple isnt getting a penny from me and I advise you do the same. - electricyoda, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6I'm so tired of Apple. It's this nickle and dime ***** that get's me annoyed. $30 for Quicktime, $2 for updates, $20 for this. Their computers are way over priced. Don't tell me it's because of the software because after the iMovie update I gave up on them. The designs even are two years out of date. The iPod saved Apple and they'll screw up again because of this nickle and dime *****. Aren't people aware that DRM free music is available now? Why rent crappy downloads w/ no HD w/o the ATV? You fanboys should just set your bank accounts to withdraw $200 a month directly to Apple. It's way too over priced for nothing. They don't even have a two button mouse. Have you tried using the mighty mouse? I have an Apple, I've used iTunes. They were great when they switched to Intel but I still had to bring in my iMac for a motherboard replacement. The nail in the coffin of Apple is that their mouse interface is soo silly! It's not even close to being accurate and the cursor flops around... the fix? Buy a program. It's just my opinion so save your flames for someone else. I'm done with Apple's B.S. We're just buying Steve Jobs' mock turtlenecks. It's just marketing.
- sleepwalkers, on 01/18/2008, -1/+5It has *nothing* to do with me not wanting to pay $20, it's all about the principle of this.
These are *not* new applications being released, they're applications that have existed since day one of the iPhone. I'm upset that Apple wants $20 for it, seeing as there were no development costs or anything. This is an update, and if the AppleTV gets a major update like it's getting for free, why is this $20? If the $20 covered some development costs and made it affordable for Apple to create new software, that's fine by me and I'd gladly shell out $20 if I liked the new apps. This isn't the case, though. - Firehed, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4Mail on a portable device is a lot less useful when you're not constantly connected to a data source. Likewise for maps, weather, and stocks. Notes, not so much.
You're just trying to make connections that don't exist. - adamkmccarthy, on 01/18/2008, -2/+5remeber the $2 something for the airport update...? i can't see why $20 when all they're going to do is annoy people who just bought one (and didnt jail break it) just for profit i suppose. it wouldn't cost anything to just release.
- skidooer, on 01/18/2008, -0/+31.1.2 added the ability to add events to the calendar on the iPod. It was a free upgrade. Why wasn't that new feature considered a new feature as far as accounting goes?
- subterfu9e, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3You know what? Everyone's been saying that the 20USD is required due to accounting laws, but yet NOBODY can tell us why MSFT was able to upgrade the zune 1.0 software for zilch.
If MSFT can do it WHY NOT apple?
I was an early adopter, and it sucks.
What happens to us who don't have access to the itunes store? How the hell are we supposed to pay even if we were willing to?
Way to screw the people who were willing to take a chance, steve. - mrbutter, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3agreed.
yet people still hate on microsoft and ejaculate over steve jobs.
what a load of crap - bigbadgoat, on 01/18/2008, -1/+4It has nothing to so with ability to pay, and everything to do with not having for something to be free. I don't care if it cost 20 cents. My iPod touch will stay jailbroken and I'll use all those apps for free anyways.
- RedS0x, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3It is true because I updated my iPod Touch to 1.1.3 and my parents upgraded both of their iPhones to 1.1.3...all free. I don't care what any article says, I did it.
I wasn't talking about the apps, I was talking about the firmware...a lot of people were getting it confused with the apps...you don't have to pay for 1.1.3. - Agreb91, on 01/18/2008, -2/+4on apple site and on itunes it won't let you download the apps. Dont know if that means anything.
- thebaconmonster, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2i didn't know digg reached out to those happy california cows...
- Dweller99, on 01/18/2008, -3/+5yeah I am getting sick of the whining too.. not about people complaining about paying $20, I am sick of the whining from the "its only $20, shut up about it" people. Here is a tip. If you see an article about the upgrade, dont click it. You will then be spared the "whining".
That will be $20 please. -
