iPod touch/iPhone ramdisks decrypted
tuaw.com — In the words of the sainted Professor P. Farnsworth: "Good news, everybody!" The iPhone/iPod touch dev team has decrypted the iPhone 1.1.1 and iPod touch ramdisks.

- sykotic, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3Jailbreaking the iphone and touch isn't too hard but knowing the key can make it easier for people who don't like command lines. The TIFF exploit works like a charm though. 1-click solutions should be out again soon.
I guess the unlocking of the iphone again is means for celevration though...- nape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you really don't need to know anything about the command line, if you can copy and paste, you can do it.
- ThrasherC, on 10/15/2007, -6/+55Not to be too judgemental, but I can't stand to see Hubert J. Farnsworth misquoted. His catch phrase was typically "Good news, everyone!" and not "everybody." Feel free to digg me down, I just had to get that out.
- arobicha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HUBERT Farnsworth being the key word here.
- soapdev, on 10/13/2007, -3/+6can someone explain what the key does?
is it just a better way to jailbreak?- SSUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Encryption key. Basically, it's a key which is the sort of 'code' which is used to scramble bytes. Without the key all you see is gibberish, with the key you see the real thing.
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2How long until Apple patches it..
- drakia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Ok, I hate to be the caller of dupe, but come on, it's still on the front page for crying out loud! And the other one is a DIRECT link to the dev teams wiki, not blogspam.
- noseeme, on 10/13/2007, -8/+4GAH! It makes me feel like UNIX is so insecure!
Fortunately, I don't think anyone has any plans of jailbreaking my Ubuntu laptop. :)- RadicalEdward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2um, is that a joke?
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What, do I have to pretend "sarcasm" is a valid HTML tag in EVERY comment?

- kelly, on 10/13/2007, -7/+3Just remember... Apple warned you, Apple prepared you, Apple told you want to expect.
Therefore, you're officially not allowed to bitch at Apple if you install this and it "bricks" your phone.- SSUK, on 10/13/2007, -2/+2I like how Digg users bury comments which are the truth. Okay, they may not brick your iPhone or iPod touch, however this will be patched and this exploit will become old hat within a month. However, you can just... Not update and wait for a hacked 1.1.2 or 1.2.0 jailbreak to come along before updating.
- sparkrainfir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't think i follow you. you're telling peole to wait until 1.1.2 jailbreak because the 1.1.1 jailbreak is going to be patched in 1.1.2? don't you think the 1.1.2 jailbreak will be patched in a 1.1.3 version?

- mymate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://modmyiphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=957 ... does this guide work fro downgrading baseband firmware
- RadicalEdward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Can people stop complaining about how apple could fix or brick it all with an update!
THEY DON'T FORCE YOU TO UPDATE
meaning you can hack the crap out of your iphone/itouch and just not update. If you need to update you can always restore the ipod and their are plenty of restoring methods for the iphone as well.
yes apple will probably fix all this, but does that mean if you hack your ipod/iphone it's gonna be a brick? NO.- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didn't the ipod touch come locked all to high heaven?
and don't new iphones come with the 1.1.1 firmware?
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1didn't the ipod touch come locked all to high heaven?

Just find it odd that a dupe gets as much attention 11 hours later. - klimegreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hard to say if this all worthwhile. I can see Apple's side, though I think they blundered on the 3rd party app thing, I mean if they want to keep the damn thing locked that's one thing, but why prevent 3rd party apps? I can see the hackers side, and its quite a compliment to Apple to get so much interest. What bugs me is the cat and mouse game, normal people can't spend their cycles mod their phone like this, only to be caught when the next update comes out. - jinkop38, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In january this wil be totally useless...
- SSUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I put my bets on next month, actually with the release of the UK iPhone.
- OldMacNeco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The actual quote is "Good news, everyone!"
This is an outrage!- rix0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Everyone, I have a very dramatic announcement, so anyone with a weak heart should leave now. Goodbye!"
- kelly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"if they want to keep the damn thing locked that's one thing, but why prevent 3rd party apps?"
I hope you see the oxymoron in your statement.... unless you're one of the dugg nutjobs who think that Apple applied the update to purposefully "brick" the iphone.
These hacks exploit security holes in the iphone to get installed. They write code to the rom. Apple's software assumes that the rom has not been tampered with so when it updates the firmware its going to call upon code that has been altered... thus "bricking" your phone.
Apple doesn't want 3rd part apps on the phone. They said that they weren't going to sup[port them... supporting them means creating code that checks to see if the rom is altered by the hack. - opticwind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dugg for the Futurama reference.
"Grunka, Lunka
Dumpadity piPhones"
"Ok, we get it!"- SSUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You murdered that quote... Just, murdered it dead.
- TechyLah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't care about the apps as much as the loss of mounted drive emulation. I put 50 CD albums and 70 jpgs on my Ipod touch and there is no app anywhere that can download them to this same MAC or ANY PC or MAC anywhere! Isn't it possible to prohibit 3rd party applications without prohibiting general drive emulation and losing the convenience any cheap keychain USB drive has?
- noisebleed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't played around with it myself, but Ecamm iphone drive sounds like it might meet your needs: http://ecamm.com/mac/iphonedrive/ . Though I suspect there will eventually be a free program that does the same thing, it's only $10 so potentially worth it if you don't feel like waiting.
- jotajota3, on 11/28/2007, -2/+2This whole affair with the iPhone pisses me off. Apple is breaking the law by working against users who want to unlock their phones. I don't care what any Apple fanboy says, I hope Apple and AT & T get their pants sued off for this! If Apple prides themselves so much in looking out for the customer, they'll change their ways with the iPhone. What say you Kevin Rose?
- Drewboy64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm so confused. I just recently got a Touch and I'm anxious to get into the hacking scene. But I feel lost for a few reasons. First off, I don't know what is for the iPhone and what is for the Touch or what can be used for both. As well as not too much information about will the adding of applications on the Touch get easier? Or will it always be arduous? Or is it even that arduous at all?! As well as, what's the risk of bricking the Touch during the process of putting applications on it? If anyone has any answers, it would be very helpful. It's not like I don't know what I'm doing, I just don't want to blow a $400 investment down the toilet just because I didn't look into it enough.
- zdiggler, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1Wow.. I thought OSX and Apples are SECURE!
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Anyone else read the entire headline in the professors voice?
