- okto, on 10/10/2007, -4/+48How would a blowtorch scratch something?
- mahoua, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43Ever been hit in the face by a hard-thrown blowtorch ?
- Remmiz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29Oh man, he gently slid a razor blade across the surface. I was expecting it to shatter under that pressure!
- pathy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE MAY SHOCK YOU.
- adroit, on 10/18/2007, -4/+27i hate the chrome backs on ipods. Apple needs to get rid of them.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23what you are about to see MAY SHOCK YOU. brace yourselves!!!! *gently rubs key on glass screen*
- Ireland, on 10/18/2007, -3/+24Unfortunately the back just got scratched in that test, even without trying. Why didn't they just make the back black anodized aluminum? The only plus to the very shiny stainless back is it's looks, but that's before you put it in your pocket. Sheildzone are 'back' in business as far as I'm concerned. 'PUN' DEFINITELY INTENDED.
- mntbikeracer1, on 10/18/2007, -9/+28Ya he put pretty much no force into any of that. What a joke.
- elitegrunt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16i can safely blow coke off my itouch without any risk of damaging it! thanks dude!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12this is nothing amazing considering the screen is glass. try rubbing your car keys on a window and you will get the same results!
- cgruber, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14No, I do not believe that is the question at all.
- seanjanis, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14wow, so they make a music player that doesn't scratch...it's the 21st century, i expect telekinesis by now...
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15If all he is testing is the glass front, why bother? its glass, right?
http://www.stuffonfire.com/2007/07/03/scratching-t ... - Takuro, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12What you are about to see may shock you: How will an iPod Touch stand up to... a dandelion.
- Emachine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Something tells me hes going to keep wiping it clean 3 times a minute, the class surface is scratch resistant, but fingerprints are going to be an issue.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Do they make any iPod Touch protectors that just go on the back of the damn thing?
- StandardsDT, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9That was the most boring scratch test on an iPod I have ever seen.
- Unlgued, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yeah, a lot of blowtorches are made of metal, and have sharp edges.
- alejandrogarza, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7he should make the same test with the backside(the shiny mirror surface) of the ipod touch
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Have you owned an iPod before?
You can scratch the metal surface of a previous ipod with that much force and *paper*
I'd say this is an improvement. - m00dy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7okay...this may shock you...
lol wtf? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Given, you *were* wearing your purple sequin jumpsuit...
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This guy is a tool. I'm angered by his voice, his intonation, and his overuse of the phrase "this may shock you" in reference to things that are clearly not shocking to anyone that's taken Earth Science and has heard of a dude named Moh.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Emos are well known for scratching their wrists?
This is news to me. Frontpage here I come!! - kjk437, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I received my touch this morning, and there are already significant scratches on the back just from putting it in and out of my pocket. Great unit, though.
- DiggerRich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5OMG it's a conspiracy! They used a HOUSE KEY.
- Ridikul, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Thanks for your observation.
- lhsonic, on 10/29/2007, -0/+4that was the worst test I've ever seen. First of all, the best test would be to put keys and your touch in your pocket and emulate your lifestyle. Be it a walk to school, a jog or whatever with both in your pocket... because that's usually how things work, you're in a hurry and you toss your keys and your ipod in your pocket. Secondly, like eyeglasses, glass IS more resistant to scratches so you can't compare plastic and glass...
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4"Good luck scratching that!"???? I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE!!!!!!!!!!
...anyone care to donate an ipod touch?... - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually in real life fingerprints are not an issue when using it - it's only when turned off you can see them (and yes, there are always fingerprints).
I agree he was way too vigorously (and repeatedly) wiping it down, Penny Arcade had a good comment on that:
"Yes, the screen gets dirty, like your PSP and your Playstation 3. The experience is very similar. You can either dedicate your life to buffing these surfaces or you can live a live of dignity. I leave this up to you."
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/07/02
hopefully he was just wiping it down to illustrate there were no scratches, and does not feel compelled to wipe it down so often normally! - kotatsu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Looks pretty good to me. My 5G black iPod was covered in scratches on the first day, and that was just by wiping the smudges of it with a soft cloth.
- screwloose45, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Press harder kid.
- sweetnuts4sale, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Granted, it does look like a house key but, it could still be a car key. Apparently you've never had to drive an old bucket before...
- sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Thank you for this info. But this has the same glass screen as the iphone right?
- Takuro, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It did. The stain on my pants proves it.
- shaitanx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Gentle..
- Piggycow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3God at least use the point corner of the razor blade and push down. A razor blade doesn't cut anything by sliding it over perpendicularly
- joltjake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3okay, so you dropped it onto a rubber matted treadmill, where it then fell 7inches off of the treadmill onto the floor. Wow, you suuuure were lucky. But I'm talking about a real fall, from 6 feet, onto the street.
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That was the question. in 2006.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3zzzzzzzzz I never got what the big deal is with screens that get scratched. NOTHING IN THIS WORLD IS SCRATCH PROOF!
- triblinator, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Better than my nano... that thing got scratched by the fabric of my pants. This gives me a lot more confidence in the product.
- philz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Err what did you expect? Explosions and fireworks? .... Kids these days...
- aeiou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3For one thing, its on Gizmodo, and for another_ WHO CARES!!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2blow coke? itouch? what?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Your statement lacks direction and structure. I really can't figure out what you're trying to say here.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well Apple finally learned that plastic screens scratch to hell. Now all they have to do is realise that the chrome backings scratch to hell and we'll have a more robust iPod.
- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow I thought a lot of these comments were really funny, but it looks like the Mac fanboys are on the bury brigade. Always thought they needed a sense of humor. LSTMS @ Takuro's comment. And I got ninja'd with the "Will it blend?" comment.
edit: Okay, not ninja'd so much as he just beat me to it. - milkmage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2unlike the previous generation ipods and nanos the face on the phone and Touch is ***** glass. it'll crack, but not scratch (easily)
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was going to be a smartass and say "diamonds". But a quick glance on wikipedia says they can be scratched by other diamonds. Dammit.
- Psych77, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I call *****. You bought an iPhone and it wasn't for fashion over function?
