- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25One hundred dollars!?
*places pinky to corner of mouth* - mrmidgetman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20I've got a good comercial idea. here it goes:
iPod
its so over priced we can afford to cut 100 bucks off the pricetag. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Something to do with raindeer prostitution I think. Santa's going to be really upset about this.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10does living in uberland ever make you feel inadequate?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is this considered to be the 6th generation ipod? Or is it an upgraded 5g.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This is just like any gaming system or other technology. The price is high to gouge the gotta-have-its. Once they recoup their production/advertising expenses and make the money they want to make, they lower the price. It's tech econ. 101. Look at any gaming system or consumer appliance. When DVD players first came out, would you have imagined you could get a portable one at Sam's club for $40?
- celchu33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Because they upgraded the 60GB so you get 80GB for the same price?
- rowhard99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9they must be trying to clear out the old iPods to make room for the new ones that will be unveiled today....
wishful thinking!!!!! - bigsteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It appears there's no longer a student discount on the iPods either...
- blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Well not only that, its now an 80 Gigger.
- Shabadoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12"One hundred dollars bucks"
No such thing; marked as inaccurate. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If creative follows suite I might be able to get a zen. Thankyou Apple.
- PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My buddy bought his 60GB iPod last week...even though I told him not to, as price drops were coming soon. I didn't think it would be this soon though. Oh man, he's not going to hear the end of this one from me.
- NeCtUr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no its upgrade economics. the ipods have never gone down in price except when new sizes or upgrades come out. and then its only to clear off stock of the old versions.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can't really run with a HD-based iPod. If you go more than 30 minutes or so, it starts to skip and buffer. Runners also prefer flash MP3 players because they're less bulky and easier to strap to your arm, and you can stash them in your gear bag without having to charge them so often.
That's why I have a nano... so there's one possible answer for ya. - DJosephDesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5DUDE! Even the new, 80-gig iPod dropped $50 to $349! This finally brings the iPod down to a reasonable price, and I'm definitely looking at buying one now … as much as I've previously hated the iPod. But that was mostly because of price.
There is hope for the world yet. - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And yet, the most basic iPod is still costing R$ 1300 ($602.70) over here where I live (Uberlândia, Brazil)... *sigh*
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dammit, http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=6CB1CADD&nclm=iPod
I'm a technology whore. A total whore. Now my 60gig vid is no longer the best available. Now I'm going to have to go buy the 80gig and demote my 60gig from being the coolest thing in the world (kinda) to being just an external drive. I may be a girl, but toys are to me what diamonds are to whoever it is who likes diamonds.
Oh, double dammit, the 80gig is less than I paid for my 60gig. - LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The name is a bit ironic. The place sucks.
If you knew me, you'd know that I think this city is just the worst place I could ever be. Absolutely nothing I'm interested on is available here, and I'm saying this from living over here for my entire life, looking for these things.
The iPod was minor, I'm talking things from a physics college course to access to basic electronic components, things I'd want to dedicate my life to! But not only that, places to visit, movies for rent, people to meet... There's nothing this city has to offer me, and it always, always failed me.
If it wasn't for the Internet I got 9 years ago, I'd have given hope on all the things I care about long ago. It was the only thing that let me realize the world out there (especially outside Brazil) is actually decent, and that this all wasn't just an issue with me. It gave me a reason to don't give myself up to this dreadful place.
I've been trying to get out of it for two years already (I'm 20 now), but it's not really easy without having to literally start a life from scratch - not a good thing, and hardly a wise move... But in a way, I don't think my life will start until I leave the place for good.
So, if anything, I feel inadequately placed. This place is hell for me, and it feels awful to wake up realizing I'm still here.
Sorry for the rant... - ajaxfontura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This isn't entirely irrelevant at this point. Remember the free iPod Nano/ $179 rebate w/ purchase of a mac (education only)? Well, you can't use that for any of the models introduced today. Looking into it, though, the old (pre 9/12) 60gb is showing up at $299. So, even though you can't get a shiny-new iPod, there still seems to be some savings over using the same promotion yesterday.
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, this has a pretty obvious answer. Having a hard drive running in your pocket everywhere you go, getting jossled and bounced around constantly, with thin little plates and intricate little needle trying to stay on track all the while is a recipe for disaster. I had to get my original 40gb ipod replaced twice due to hard drive issues before I finally sold the thing and got a nano.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@andrebrown
Nano and Shuffle are now in 2G, but iPod Video is only considered upgraded 5G. - debtman7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
Odd, there's no longer any education discount either... - Kakkun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just bought my new ipod video like 3 weeks ago :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Example microwaves.
- sgoob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I may be in the minority, but I'm excited. Mainly about the new iTunes 7 and how it updates/interacts with the iPod.
- twinprism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because it's 8gb of flash and not a 30gb hard drive.. so when you do those insane cliff jumps while snowboarding and take a tumble, your hard drive doesn't crash..
I know the regular iPods do a fairly good job of minimizing disc reads, and people even jog with them, but for extreme stuff, I'd want a Nano. - fantomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I'm not seeing the student discount through my shools bookstore either. The apple section of the page updated to the new content, regular retail prices though :(
The funny thing is that it still says buy a mac and get a free nano til Sept 16th. - drjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well think about it this way, in a few years you will get a TB for less than what you payed for your 80g.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Be sure to read this as "$100 *LESS*", not "for $100". Yes, that's a big drop in price, but I'm sure they've been making their (more then) fair share on them in the past.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Regardless, NeCtUr, they were bound to go down in time. No technology remains its opening price forever. If this digg just said that the prices dropped and that's nice, that would be one thing. This author is surprised that they would ever fall, which is naive at best, probably rather foolish.
- dunning, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ordered the nano 4 gig silver from apple.com. its going to be a long 8-12 days :(
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*****. I may give away the old 30 gig and get an 80 gig for that price.
- Qoogirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's the same reason laptops/portables are more expensive than desktops. You're paying for the portability and lightweight factor. It stinks, but it's true. The lighter, slimmer and more convenient, the more stuff costs now. =/
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"SOB! I bought my 60 GB 3 months ago....at CostCo....wonder when they'll drop their price so I can trade in my 100$ rebate ;)"
Costco you say?? Bring that ***** back, they will refund anything anytime... i love that place. - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Now he doesn't need to take out as much cash from the ATM machine to buy it.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yeah, I have been waiting to upgrade my color non-video for some of these new features. My fear is the wide screen version will come out a month after I buy this new one. This is the reason I haven't purchased the video ipod yet. Jesus, I'm paralyzed with inaction.
- shortstack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1no, only the 5g ipods can. they're still calling the ipod 5gen on the apple site. only an upgrade, not an all new model. kind of like when they merged the 4th gen and the photo ipod together, wasn't a totally new model, just an upgrade.
- stang4783, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got to admit...costco is the *****! Anyone know if their prices for iPods have dropped too?
- smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The ones they unveiled today are a joke. With the supposed widescreen on the way, who would be willing to buy these? slightly bigger hard drive, battery time extension, and brighter screen. I'll just stick with my 5G till i get what everyone has wanted, the widescreen... and Apple better hurry with that thing because you can only stay the coolest mp3 player maker if you have the coolest mp3 player. Don't jump the shark Apple.
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2how does the iTV work? what resolution video do you get?
- kufu91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or the price for the parts got cheaper
- JB1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IPOD is the best proven MP3 player out on the market right now. Everyone wants one and if they want to drop their prices, they will just get more business. This will create accounts with people and possibly help with the selling of their other products thus increasing their net income.
- luuneetoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Can't tell, but does the new nanos support games? I just figure it's a pretty small screen...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2SOB! I bought my 60 GB 3 months ago....at CostCo....wonder when they'll drop their price so I can trade in my 100$ rebate ;)
- TechnoDork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Also, using a hard drive in extreme temps may cause you problems. I overheard one guy say he actually heats the tank bag on his motorcycle so his hard drive model iPod works in cold weather.
- TechnoDork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0***
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1After having played around with iTunes 7 a bit, there are a LOT of major improvements.. some very annoying issues have been resolved, namely being able to decide what goes on your ipod without having to go to preferences. It's now much easier to manage video content, especially stuff you ripped from your own DVDs. Man this makes me want a video capable ipod.
- Twango, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Where's the analog/TOSlink in for RECORDING???
