iPod phone confirmed
smarthouse.com.au — While analysts and Apple rumor sites have been speculating, Benq confirms that an iPhone is in the works. Their suppliers who work with Apple have been requested to supply parts for the iPhone. Benq also states that the Apple iPhone is common knowledge in Taiwan. The iPhone is expected to be released in the 4th quarter of this year.

- alextiming, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36I can't wait. I HATE Motorola phone's UI.
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I've hated the UI for every Motorola phone I've ever owned.
- leoCT, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Apple could go with Sony Ericsson. Best UI I tried and very sleek (candybar) phones. But I have the impression that Americans prefer flip phones (e.g. Razor).
- piecewise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I hate the UI for every single cell phone I have ever come across (Two Motorolas, two Nokias, a Sony Ericsson, a Sanyo, and a Blackberry).
- FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Can someone explain to me what's wrong with Motorola's UI? I have a PEBL and honestly don't see anything wrong with the UI.
Please don't flame me or -digg me, I just want to know. - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5The RAZR is great, but I have to seriously agree here. The Motorola UI is horrible and looks like someone in a beginning Photoshop class is the person that designed it. I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple can do with a UI (I don't want an iPod in my phone though) but I am a little cautious about what the price point will be. I hope its not inflated like all of the other ***** that Apple puts out.
- philcloh2o, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I don't mind Samsungs UI for all the phones I have tryed of theirs.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@flyingllama:
to get to the calculator or calendar apps, it's:
settings -> tools -> calculator.... WTF?
Phone book entries can only have one contact per person, so if you want to store someone's home andwork numbers, you need two entries.
Every time you take a picture, it asks you if you want to send it or save it, then it asks where you want to save it. Then the "picture saved" status message comes up for like three seconds and you can't do anything else for a while. You can't just take a bunch of pictures without having to fiddle around with the menu between each one.
I wish phone makers would take the time to incorperate user feedback into their interfaces, or else open-source their oses and let us program them. It's been my general experience with a few obvious exceptions that hardware companies really suck at software and don't seem to understand this. - gregeth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Can someone explain to me what's wrong with Motorola's UI? I have a PEBL and honestly don't see anything wrong with the UI."
Ever have a good size contact list? It's dog slow when trying to scroll down to a particular name. I often think my razr is freezing up for a second when I realize it's just catching up with the input. It happens when entering other data as well, like in the datebook. I don't necessarily think the UI is too bad, but it could definitely use a speed bump. - gigabitten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@leoCT- if you havent noticed, sony doesnt just make candy bar style phones, they have slide, flip, whatever.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm really wondering if the UI will be as simple, straight forward and intuitive like the iPod
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have a Motorola phone, and I must say the UI is not bad as you think.
@thomashallock - Ever heard of shortcuts? The ones that you can press one of the directional arrows to go there...
There is also another type of shortcut - Press menu on something such as the calendar and you can assign it as a number, then to access it, press Menu than the number you assigned to it. Of course, this works best for 9 numbers
and you have the four directional arrows and then those message keys - that's at least 15 shortcuts... How many more do you need?
@gregeth - I have lots) of contacts (250+), and don't find this to be a problem at all. Infact, you can put some of your important contacts on your SIM card, if you want to change phones. There's speed dial, and if you know the first character of the person's name, press the button that corresponds to that.
All I can say is Moto is not a bad interface once you become used to it. - samstr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is going to be BIG!

http://www.wirah.com - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you for explaining Motorola's phone problems! Their picture taking method has some serious issues. I guess that Motorola's UI Could use a little work.

P.S: Does anyone know if there is ANY way to get those really sweet new Sony-Ericsson phones here in the US? - BrenBeers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can buy unlocked phones that will work on any GSM service provider. All you have to do is swap out the SIM card and ready to go. And you can buy the phones unlocked on ebay. I just bought me a Sony Ericsson w900i. Should be coming in a few days or so.
- thetrav, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Good news! Maybe this will finally be an iTunes-capable phone worth buying.
- me2me4me6me8, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30This hardly seems like a confirmation... Does anyone else find this a little vague/misleading?
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I agree. This is not a confirmation. This is just another Taiwanese OEM blowing smoke up our collective butts... and analysts going off and sensationalizing.
I'm going to stay skeptical on this one. - apersaud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Can we first get a confirmation on the "April 1st event"? Its getting pretty close and no news about inviations!
Steve, I'm getting worried what UBS says its true.... - nanoguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He never actually said there was an event in his speech, he just kind of vaguely hinted at it. So this gives him flexibilty to back out if needed, which is what it looks like he is doing. They need to have something big to announce to have an event and they don't have anything it seems.
- cheifchuck0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1absolutely. no one can "confirm" a product release except the manufacturer. this is ***** journalism.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1crap - I modded your comment down instead of up by mistake. I wish the comment diggs were reversible.

- Oobitsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't get this anti-Engadget thing. Seems to me that copying and article from somewhere else and posting it as your own is what blogging is all about these days. Why pick on Engadget?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, that Engadget rip seemed a bit harsh. Every blog basically aggregates other sites' stories. At least Engadget has their own reporters, as well. Considering the fact that half the blog stories I read include about seven or eight "via" links before I find the original report, they at least try to break original stories.
I'm not saying to give anyone a free pass, but don't harsh on Engadget just because you don't like something else they did.

- coding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would love to have a nano sized phone but that will not happen for 10 years I'd guess.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Oh yes, I forgot. No matter how the phone actually operates, or even if there are hundreds of better phones out there, I'm SURE the iPhone will probably do better, because ignorance always beats knowledge in the world. "It's iPod! It MUST be good, despite that they didn't really give any information at all in the article!"
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What can I say but... in ALL things consumer, brand recognition is the most valuable asset.
It's not like it doesn't already exist today. Motorola has been able to milk their brand recognition for the RAZR and the SLVR even though the UI sucks and there are better phones out there...
Brand recognition is everything. That's marketing. - piecewise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I'm sorry but the iPod is better. It's not mass hysteria. Apple knows how to design great products, and because of HISTORICAL evidence, we're saying the iPhone would probably continue in that legacy.
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5What can I say but... in ALL things consumer, brand recognition is the most valuable asset.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19As long as:
1) Apple actually designs it
2) Available for all cell phone carriers (=P)
3) Has a click wheel
4) Gets good reception
5) Not limited to 100 songs
If it does those things, I'm in.- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Available for all cell phone carriers? thatll be a cold day in hell.
- GoMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If this comes out in places like Singapore or other Asian countries that don't lock phones to specific carriers, there will be an unlocked version that you can import and use on any worldwide GSM carrier. (Assuming it uses GSM)
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"If this comes out in places like Singapore or other Asian countries that don't lock phones to specific carriers, there will be an unlocked version that you can import and use on any worldwide GSM carrier. (Assuming it uses GSM)"
Thats it is true, but if its not Quadband it will be useless in a year...the 1900 band is gonna be phased out pretty soon.... - pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A click wheel is probably the last thing i would want on a phone. They can do better than just make it look exactly like an ipod but have the functions of a phone.
- riflemann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not going to be a cold day in hell. It's here today and it's called GSM, used in most countries around the world. Only the US (and maybe a couple of other small countries) have the concept of carrier-specific phones.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What can Apple bring to the table (besides the obvious)? Strong Bluetooth support that really lets you sync with the computer easily. Too many carries lock down integration with the computer because they want you to buy everything online OR pay to send it from your phone.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Carriers can still gimp the iPhone.
- SeanAhern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You don't want to use Bluetooth (in its current incarnation) for synchronization. Jobs is right - it's too slow for that. Bluetooth would be good for the headphones, and there's a rumor that an iPod will be released shortly with exactly that.
- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@seanrhearn - You obviously don't actually use bluetooth for syncing. I use it every day with a contact list over 300 and it syncs extremely quickly. That functionality has been in the mac for sometime now and keeps getting better. It was originally called isync. So where are you coming up with jobs saying bluetooth doesn't work for syncing? Jobs introduced years ago in isync, and it works great on my razor.

- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Any speculation as to the killer app in mobile computing? Large hard drive + blue-tooth + cellular access getting pretty close to whats necessary for mobile ubiquitous computing. Now all we need is a heads-up display worth a damn... And maybe some stronger processing power coming out of the ipod.

toasterweasel - Wednesday, 22 March 2006
Janitors at a Taiwanese phone maker BenQ say that Apple rumor sites have been talking to various Taiwanese "phone makers" during the past few months in an effort to bring more traffic to their sites.
"They" say that Apple will launch an iPod with phone functions and a magsafe dock connector within the next few months. "An iPod phone is definitely coming. The question is whether or not it will burst into flames when a cat urinates on it. BenQ will not be making it as we are more into making LCD monitors that burst into flames. Among manufacturers in Taiwan it is common knowledge that when your dealing with exploding cell phones and cat urine, numerous Flickr posts cannot be to far behind. The issue for many is not whether the iPhone will explode but whether or not it will come in standard white or a variety of iPod mini-esqe colors," said the BenQ executive.
Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai Precision is tipped to build the device, says Johnny Cage, a washed up fighting game star. "Apple still hasn't decided whether to give the contract for what's being referred to as an 'iPhone' to Hon Hai or to another manufacturer, says Ellen Tseng, who actually doesn't exist but whose name sounds unique enough to be believable but not unique enough to arouse suspicion. One analyst in Taipei who declined to be identified said it is possible that Steve Jobs may working on a way to actually excrete new Apple products from his pores, thus eliminating the need for manufactures all together.
Bill Shope(my dentist) believes Apple will introduce the phone, "Probably around the same time as we see Vista or Mars colonization, which ever comes first". Piper Jaffray analyst Gene "Grandpa" Munster told clients last week that he estimates there to be a 75% chance that we'll see Apple's stock go down due to unfulfilled rumors.
Analysts believe that if Apple does come out with a music-playing cell phone, it will likely have a one-hundred song limit and a 3% percent chance of running Windows XP. "Even a modest showing for an Apple multimedia cellphone could put a dent in fanboy's wallets," Barron's says. "If Apple were to grab just 1% of the 900 million phones sitting in land-fills today they could most likely turn it into something people would buy." - Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Define confirmed because I don't think we're using the same edition of the dictionary.
- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that's the next logical step for iPod. But i don't believe this article.
- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is, of course, not confirmed. However, it is promising.
I have almost no doubt Apple will eventually release their own phone, but I question when it will be released. I am in desperate need of a new Cell Phone (my current one is literally falling apart) and I'd love to wait for Apple's phone. However, the longer I have to wait, the less I want to wait.
Another thing I'm worried about it the carrier. Cingular seems like the obvious candidate, but I have a feeling (and I hope that) Apple will not specify a carrier. This would give them bigger market potential. However, the only problem with this is that the phone then will most likely not have any carrier perks, like V-Cast. That being said, it's likely that Apple will add their own perks, like a version of iTunes with the music store so you can download music to your phone. This could potentially open a whole new mobile-downloading market to Apple.
I can't wait to see what, if anything, Apple has in story in the form of a phone.- Stymyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. Since the first 2 Moto / iTunes phones were exclusive to Cingular, it wouldn't be surprising if this iPhone is as well. I will be horrendously disappointed if this phone is locked to Cingular. Here in the South, Cingular has ranked at or near the bottom of customer satisfaction surveys for a few years now. Personally, I never had as many dropped calls and bad customer service as I had with Cingular. If the iPhone is exclusive to Cingular, no matter how great the phone may be, I'll pass on it.
- TortfeasorG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1personally, i'd much rather see an ipod w/ phone capabilities than a phone w/ ipod capabilities...
My phone is crap and is basically interchangeable... My ipod on the other hand is awesome, and it'd take a serious phone-pod to get me to buy one...else, i'd just hang on to my old ipod and my old phone.
Motorola has put the cart before the horse w/ its ROKR and SLVR - brydude, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9Join the revolution. Mark all comments toward zero (+ or -), needless of their content.

- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like the goal is to put everything easy to lose and a pain when lost into one package. The cellphone, ipod and maybe blackberry are rolled into one next?
- Lindquist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to see Apple step in to help drive prices of other phones down. If they can possibly deliver a smallish phone with at least a 10 gig HD, I'm all over it.
- patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't think this story is legit.. although there /will/ probably be a phone sometime. I'm thinking an announcement along w/ video iPod on April Fool's?
- SenyorDrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh goody. All those other articles saying that the ipod phone was real never panned out.
This is such a good confirmation - Klever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm sure Apple will dream up some way to make consumers want to buy an overpriced (come on you know it wont be cheap) cell phone. Should be interesting regardless.
""Finally a phone that JUST WORKS!""

- cdman98, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It wont take much for the iPhone to be great.
To be honest it probably won't be more over priced than any current music phone from the likes of sony or anyone else. - e_mnc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If Apple was smart they would rent time from mobile carriers but incorporate many features that the current mobile carriers are slow to provide.
An example is streaming video and integrating SMS/MMS messaging into online chat like iChat/AIM. To take it 1 step further with video chat from the phone over the internet with iChat AV. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The best thing that could come out of this is a vast reduction in the length of time it takes the average cell phone to make it to US shores. I've been eyeing a Sony Ericsson K750i for months upon months now. They're out everywhere else in the world. But none of the carriers in the US have them yet. The Cingular chick I spoke with suggested eBay. While I appreciate her honesty and lack of corporate slavishness, I don't see me spending $400 on a phone. So I wait for Cingular to start carrying it so I can take advantage of a large discount. If Apple releases the iPhone worldwide all at once, it might spur other companies to do the same.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not? That is what the phone costs, you are too used to phones subsidized throught the carrier. In most of the rest of the world phones are sold separately from service. That is why they get them first, and generally pay more. But the service is less, the phones have better features (because carriers can't lock you out of, say, BT transfers, so you have to pay $2 for a ringtone) and you generally aren't tied to one carrier. So if they ***** you off or make promises about service that aren't true, you tell them to sod off, go to another carrier, shove in the new SIM, and off you go.
I just bit the bullet and bought an unlocked Samsung D600. Its awesome. But no carrier in the US has it, so you have to pay more and deal with funkiness like adapters for the charger.

- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome! Now people will be able to download my (DRM'd) phone conversations on iTunes!!!!!
Apple's iPod doesn't play 3/4 of the music/video formats I need. Tell me again why I should be excited about this?? - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As with all Apple rumors on Digg, you shouldnt believe until Steve announces it. Until then, NOTHING is "confirmed".
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A possibility. Given Apple's penchant for vertical integration they will launch a VMNO service. The phone will be white, and very pretty, with a VGA camera and iTunes. It will not have a transflash slot, and be limited to 100 songs, so as not to cannabilize iPod sales.
Service will be $100 a month. The phone will initially retail at $499, only through Apple, which will be the only way to sign up for the VMNO service. 2 year contract required. And Apple fans will eat it up. - dbavaria, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If this is true, I'm glad Apple went with Benq, a company known for its solid products and reliability...pshh yeah right.
- eobanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe if you RTFA you'd know that it's not actually BenQ with whom Apple is negotiating.
- daypah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think this has been confirmed like 12 times already so I'm not holding my breath.
- Kirium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd take this article with a grain of salt. Smarthouse.com.au (and their hard copy magazine) Is well known within Australian hifi and tech circles for being.. uhhh... how shall I put this.... Full of *****. One more than one occasion...
They often copy other magazine articles word for word (I'm aware this is a legal practice when agreed to between magazines) but there is never any acknowledgment of this by *****.com.au. As with many others, they only exist because of their marketing and advertising dollars, so there is never a bad word said about anything in their magazines or articles (on the rare occasion they write them)
David Richards isn't a journalist either. He actually owns (or co-owns) an online hifi store called digitalhome.com.au (which you will see the link to down the bottom), and has come under huge criticism from hifi store owners for the way he conducts his business in conjunction with his magazine. Where am I going with all this?? Nowhere really. Just wanted to alert folks to the history and character of the writer and say that this article may not be all it seems...
Edit: I've got no axe to grind either. I'm not in the industry at all. I'm a public servant - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Imagine a phone as thin as the iPod Nano... I think Apple could figure it out and pull it off..
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as I don't really care what apple does I would be incredibly interested in combining my mp3 player with my phone. Give me blue tooth and 60 gb's of space for mp3s and I"ll take two.
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they do make a phone let's hope it does J2ME apps. Apple already offers its own J2SE implementation on Mac OSX and they have the in-house talent to pull it off.
Currently the other handset makers have created a device fragmentation nightmare and it could be solved if the iPhone were to become as popular as the iPod. This single phone could promote a reference hardware config like what the GBA and Nintendo DS offer to their respective developers. - gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is what makes this interesting... if true:
The phone may be the first ever to have a USEABLE CALENDAR. Because of iCal integration.
The phone may be the first ever to have a USEABLE MP# PLAYER. Because of iTunes integration.
The phone may be the first ever to have a USEABLE CAMERA because of iPhoto integration.
Otherwise its pretty much the same as any other phone but white.
The implication is..... iLife on the PC. They have done a fair amount of work on iTunes, this would not surprise me.- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm... mp#

"The phone may be the first ever to have a USEABLE CAMERA because of iPhoto integration."
