- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31I dare somebody to tell the ipod owners to stop whining.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25It's the detonation sequence starting. That's what you get for playing the Mission Impossible theme.
- snowelite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28Are you sure you just dont have ***** emo on your Ipod?
- digggggggggg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15In other news, Digg users report whining sound emanating from 2G nano owners.
- jakejarvis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14These are iPod nanos, so no hard drives.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14When I hold my nano up to my ear... I can hear the ocean.
- ahole, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Apple reports whining sound emanating from 2G nano owners! Sorry couldn't help myself. I wonder if this is like the mosquito teen repelant sound that old fogies like me can't hear?
- Morsetlis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12The nanos are flash-based solid state mp3 players.
What the ***** can the noise can be coming from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus
That explains it. - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Dozens of users affected!!!!! call the papers! Alert digg.com!
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I like nanos. Back up your argument.
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I hate when I type long replies where I think I'm intelligent then someone proves me wrong. He must feel terrible, happy new year ecbo0m; even though you didn't do your research before posting.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8DIfferent people can hear high-pitched sounds differently. I, for one, can hear them very loudly and sometimes I have to leave when there is a old TV on that makes a lond high pitched sound. However, some people can't even here it. I'm sure they wish they could quit whining, but it just drives some people crazy.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My sister makes that noise, I demand a refund.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3zebwinz, i agree the itunes for windows is totally weird now. it works fantastic on a mac because of core and everything being built in, but some of the things it does shouldn't be on windows. like the coverbrowser is a huge resource hog on windows, and overall its just a less tight app than itunes6 was on windows. the thing getting hot while charging is normal, the wining is more preference.
- chudgoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh god....a class action lawsuit is needed here.
The thing you never noticed before must now be driving you crazy...
Am I the only Apple user that doesn't immediately throw the apple device under a microscope and look for some imperfection? - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Probably because your iPod 5G's have spinning hard-disks in them.
- cubeeggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At my school, due to low budgets or something, they have these TVs that emit this incredible fingernails on a chalkboard sound. I can usually just ignore it, but I can't understand how anyone would want to sit right next to one.
- kingygk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@postitnote. People get the nano because of it's size and weight. Put it in your shirt pocket and it dissapears. You can't say that for the hard drive ipods. My 20 gig ipod weights a ton compared to the nano. I got that from freeipods.com along with the 4 gig nano. I use the nano all the time. It also sounds better than my 20 gig ipod. This is when it is hooked up to my ipod cable on my alpine car deck. I can't wait to pick up an 8 gig nano. I was hoping Apple was going to release the 16 gig nano by now. I know samsung has a 16, 32 and 64 gig cf chip out. Id definately buy a 64 gig nano :)
- zebwinz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I am an Ipod fan, having a 20gb one for almost 2 years before it got flakey. My wife had a 1st gen Nano and it worked great so I figured I'd get a Nano too. Less space but what the heck. My 2nd gen 4gb nano gets really hot when on the charger, makes the whine that this article points out...both of which I thought were normal.
However, my Nano freezes up about every 2 days or so and I have to hold down the Menu and center buttons to restart it. Not a huge deal but If you are in the middle of a run, it's kind of a pain in the ass. Along with iTunes 7 on windows taking up all my CPU resources simply when downloading a new podcast and my apple love is swiftly waining. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"dozens of iPod owners are reporting high-pitching whining"
*smug* - danfuturo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Donde esta Apple trolls? This story is prime cut, choice steak for those guys!
- nekochan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mine not only whines, but makes a little 'peep peep peep' noise when running Music Quiz. it doesn't bother me at all. in fact, i miss the 'click...whirrrr' noise my 3G makes when starting up. tiny noises mean the object is working.
- YamahaSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sometimes the design of the switching regulator can cause whining sounds when the switching frequency of the regulator is in the audio region. Some switching regulator designs under low load will go into a "pulse mode" where the frequency of the pulse mode starting and stopping could be in the audio range. The sound itself comes from the series output inductor from the switcher when the magnetic field building and collapsing causes the windings to actually move which is what physically generates the sound waves. A properly designed switcher should not be audible.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Mine was doing this on the charger last week...
it is now dead and I'm iPod-less.. :( - Settra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Solid state, douchebag.
- greevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And here I thought all the whining was coming from the RIAA... I guess I learned something today.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the black 6gb 2B nano. No whine from it. I'm pretty picky about MP3 bitrates, but if there is a whine, I certainly can't hear it.
Maybe there was a bad batch, or that iPod owners tend to be whiny. Also, no discoloration either. - dduardo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had this issue with an 8GB Nano and exchanged it for new Nano. The new one is completely silent. There must be some type of manufacturing problem that is causing this whine to appear on some Nanos.
- dopefish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My laptop makes similar noises when it is working. Should have taken it back as DOA when I think about it, but I guess it didn't cross my mind as a big issue, as the machine seemed to work fine. Two years down the track and everything is still running normally. 2 years warranty remain so still not too concerned...
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why the whining on the forums? If you have a hardware problem, contact Apple about it. It's not like someone on the forums could remedy the situation.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://hackndev.com/node/441
Try that on the TX, it alters the pixel clock to shut the whining up. Works great on mine.
Oh, and guess who made the whining LCD part? Hint: Starts with a S, ends with a Y. Four ltters. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've had my 8GB Nano for at least a couple of months now, and I can say that I have not heard any kind of whining coming out of it. It does have an annoying habit of freezing up on me though, I didn't know what to do about that the first time and had to take it into the Apple store. Holding down the middle and menu buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds restarts the software and things go back to normal. Apart from that, it has worked well.
- a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It might be from the electro-luminescent parts of the device. Listen to any watch with EL display (timex indiglo) and you'll hear this sound.. Listen to the keypad of a Motorola Razr and it does it as well. No biggie.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can spend 50 dollars more and get an ipod that still fits in your pocket/convenient size, and holds the music you want and doesn't break as easily.
- weizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 8gb 2G nano as well and I have not noticed any whining sounds coming out of it. Mine doesn't freeze either
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I hear a high pitched whine in my ears and I don't even own a Nano!
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to put my ear right up to it to hear it but yeah it does and it changes when you shake it... odd.
not that i'm bothered though... - AngryBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ambivalent
Sorry, but you're wrong. The iPod nano doesn't use the same electro-luminescence technology as Indiglo lights. According to the manufacturer, iPods use a "liquid crystal display with blue-white LED backlight." [1] After holding my nano up to my ear, I was able to hear the high-pitched hum... but it did not go away when the LED turned off. Thus, the sound is not related to the back lighting at all.
[1] http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html - tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Noisy ipods is a good thing, as least for running linux on ipod. This guy used the sounds coming from the machine to reverse engineer the ipod ROM!
http://ipodlinux.org/stories/piezo/
Maybe it's me but most electronic devices seem to make a noise to me, even some of my mobile phones. My old Palm 3 used to make a whooshing noise if it was quiet enough when it was doing something taxing!
I doubt people can hear any noise from the nano's when they are out and about and the ipod is in their pockets and it does not sound like it affects the audio people listen to it? so is this a problem? - dopefish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I did not read all of the comments to see how many had already confirmed this noise, but I have had an interesting experience with this same issue.
I work at a Computers and Communications store, and I had a customer bring back a Black 2nd Gen Nano complaining of the whining. I checked and sure enough I could hear it. I grabbed the store demo unit (also black) and it emitted the same noise, although it was much more quiet. I grabbed a third one out of its packaging and it also emitted the sound, MUCH louder than both the customer's iPod, as well as the store display unit. I then grabbed the display silver, pink and blue units, and not a single one of those emitted the sound. The customer ended up taking one of the blue iPod Nanos.
Out of curiosity, I opened one more Black iPod from its packaging, and it was much more quiet than any of the other three units, but the noise was still there, and if using the iPod in a quiet room I would have no trouble hearing the noise it was emitting (that is of course if I did not have the headphones in my ears.) - Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My Palm handheld's screen makes this noise rather audibly, but what does it matter, especially if you're going to be listening to music 10x as loud as the little ring?
- nyccharlie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a razr and yes, this sound is there. I had thought it was the screen. It doesn't bother me in the least bit, because it does not interfere with any calls I make or receive. I am going to get a 8gb nano, in the near future so this probably won't bother me either.
- D3THk4t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's usually CCFL, not EL. EL is only bright enough for a keypad. Some phones are starting to use LEDs, but yes - what you're hearing the whine from the inverter... nothing too wild there.
(EL and CCFL both need inverters. LEDs do not.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Zune owners also report a whining sound.
It's the sound of their own mouths crying at the thought of the ***** they just wasted money on. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they ARE digging you down because you love Apple, and made a long unreadable post defending it. I do agree with you though.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's likely the high-voltage driver that powers the backlight for the screen. And if so, it's completely normal.
- Trevor2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everything that uses any type of fluorescent light makes a high frequency sound, weather you can hear it or not depends on how high of a frequency you can hear. http://www.nch.com.au/tonegen/index.html
- trackstar1842, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice to see others who actually understand that most other devices with lcd/backlight/ ac-dc transformers/etc have this "problem"
- lifeat24fps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh sweet Jesus, the iPods are communicating with each other. Start stocking up on provisions. It's happening already......
- Celsius032, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My PDA did that, it was from the screen when it turned on.
