- ArthurSucks, on 01/14/2008, -0/+33If us yanks had to pay a levy, then as far as I'm concerned all my downloads would be legal.
- Topher06, on 01/14/2008, -4/+35Thank God! I am so frustrated with Canada's music levies. The retarded assumption that any blank CD, DVD, tape, floppy disk, or digital player will be used to pirate copyrighted content and so you charged for it is actually unjust, and I think a class action lawsuit needs to be filed against it. I am glad that this didn't go through as it really violates every right a consumer has. While I can see more directly related devices like the iPod being a potential target for these levies, it still ignores the fact that why should legitimate music owners have to pay for the potential they might break the law? The Canadian music industry is even more lazy and unjust then the RIAA because they just tax EVERYONE rather then going after the copyright violators, you know, those people that ACTUALLY break the law. What is even more frustrating is that our Canadian government just implements these laws without any public debate or consideration for public rights.
There was recently an idea floated by some Canadian that all internet subscribers should pay a flat $5 "tax" on their service charge which will give them the right to download as much music content as they like, they just further subsidize the music industry in Canada simply for having an internet connection. Again, unfair, unjust and outrageous comes to mind. If this was the case I would never buy another song from a Canadian music artist again as I would ensure I downloaded at least $5 of content a month to offset this levy (of course, finding $5 of good Canadian music every month would become a tedious chore).
The problem is that us Canadians are so pacifist and lazy, we are not politically motivated and would pretty much let Hilter walk in and destroy all our rights without so much as a thought against it as long as it doesn't stop the flow of Tim Horton's donuts and coffee or change hockey. - nealyng, on 01/14/2008, -0/+19Exactly. The music industry wants it both ways. They think we should have to pay a tax or fee or whatever, but our downloads/unauthorized mixes would still be illegal.
- Jo9100, on 01/14/2008, -1/+17rrright... can we have demonoid back now?
- Rikushix, on 01/14/2008, -0/+15We'd rather just watch from afar. You touch the Timbits, though...you'll see what hell hath wrought.
- oderdigg, on 01/14/2008, -1/+14That's an insult to ***** everywhere.
***** pieces of ***** is more like it. - Junkyardjim, on 01/14/2008, -0/+8The thing is, is as arthur mentions
"If us yanks had to pay a levy, then as far as I'm concerned all my downloads would be legal."
thats why you don't hear of many canadians being hunted down by the RIAA, the levy is there to pay royalties that make it so RIAA can't come for us. If topher would have looked further into the levy on media he would have found that out and realized that these levy's are actually saving us canadian.
Mind you i think the one talked about in this one is a bit retarded - inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+7It's actually CRIA, but close enough.
- dvandewalle, on 01/14/2008, -1/+7yes, and we even live in houses and drive cars now too!!!!!! but we still just speak English, not American.
- Makaveli604, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6There is also the fact that the RCMP refuses to focus on individual users..
- nigh7dagger, on 01/14/2008, -0/+6That's an insult to ***** pieces of ***** everywhere.
People who don't like iPods very much is more like it. - Sornos, on 01/14/2008, -0/+5Public lynchings will proceed interruptions to Tim's coffee.
- ahhell, on 01/14/2008, -0/+4HAHAHA. ***** you, you money grubbing *****.
- mapez, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Personally I like the idea of paying a $5 flat tax on my internet to download as much music as I want. Maybe its because I enjoy paying tax for as much health care as I want, or auto insurance etc.
SK represent. - manitoba98xp, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3As someone173406 said, it's "CRIA" (Canadian Recording Industry Assocation), whereas the RIAA is the Recording Industry Association of America. CRIAA, if it existed, wouldn't make sense: Canadian Recording Industry Association of America?
- andycr512, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3Agreed... I can't remember the last time I used a CD to burn "unauthorized material", but I have -hundreds- of backup/data CD/DVD's.
- guibom, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3But at the same time, since we pay the tax on CD/DVDs, I can pirate all I want, right? That's the message they are sending.
- captainchris, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3not to mention if that tax was used for the music industry, the money would go to celine dion and not deserving indie artists.
- worn, on 01/14/2008, -1/+4Never heard of anything from the Canadian Indie scene? *gasp*
- Speed, on 01/15/2008, -0/+3Give Harper another couple of years...
- Zippo, on 01/14/2008, -0/+3I'm pretty sure the RIAA has no control over Canada anyways. Their only jurisdiction is the US - they can't sue Canadians.
- yabos, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Yes you're right, but we have the CRIA which is just as bad.
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2The sad thing is that i started bittorrenting stuff after oink and demonoid shut down. ><
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2No..it saves a SMALL portion of Canadians at the expense of those who don't wnt to illegally download music in hte first place.
- tossayo, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2so...when are the prices changing?
- HonoredMule, on 01/14/2008, -0/+2Jurisdiction.
That's now you know corporate cartels run the country. Their realm of influence is described as a 'jurisdiction.' The cops slam you for mugging people, the FBI slams you for cyber crime, and the RIAA beats you up and leaves your pants hanging from a tree. For rogue music-listening.
Despite all being granted the 'authority' by common opinion, which of these doesn't belong, and why? - Makaveli604, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1ive never got a letter and I have transfered over 1TB of data through uTorrent in the past 3ish on a UNIVERSITY connection (suicide in alot of the US)
- Makaveli604, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1sorry, this is wrong lol.
- LaGStAr, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1How about you stop tacking your blog to the end of your comments?
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1It's relevant if you're canadian.
- Speed, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1"merely downloading and making music files available on one's hard drive does not infringe copyright under current Canadian law."

I do believe that I was right. - KraigR, on 01/14/2008, -5/+6*****, all of em
- captainchris, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1this goes to show that music is more of an art than a business. a victory for canadians, hooray!
- mik3pass, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1I'd say you've hit the proverbial nail on the head, my fine Canadian friend.
Really, though. So many people do pirate, that it's impossible to fine everyone.
This is just like the god-forsaken war on drugs, and prohibition. You can't change the entire system. Just part of it. - yabos, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1The main reason no one in Canada is getting sued is because the ISPs don't have to and refuse to give up subscriber information without a court order at the request of any music label or movie studio.
- CanadianGuy, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1First the Copyright Act amendments denied and now this, power to the people.
- slantyeyed, on 01/14/2008, -2/+3I thought Canada was supposed to be cool?
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1peanuts and corn records.
- tedc, on 01/14/2008, -0/+1Hey, didn't they only just get rid of the iPod levy a couple of years back? I thought that's what the rebate cheque from Apple Canada was all about. I can't believe they're at it again...
- Speed, on 01/15/2008, -0/+1I do believe the courts said we legally could once.
- issachar, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0@someone173406
I am Canadian. With all due respect to Speed, who proved me wrong on another thread here, he is referencing the "CRIA of America" comment and then implying that old chestnut about giving up sovereignty to Americans. Even if Harper's driving down to the states to get orders from the CIA tattooed on his body, it's irrelevant to a discussion on the iPod tax.
In any case, the iPod tax predates the Harper government. It's a music industry thing that they're quite willing to have Liberal or Conservative governments implement. They're not idiots and they play both sides of the political fence.
If you want to play the fool and try to make it a partisan issue go right ahead, but don't think that you're accomplishing anything.
The way to get rid of things like this is to actually write to your MP of any party and say why they're a bad idea. And in an election ask the candidates what their view is. Get them on record saying they're for or against things like this. Call them on it if they give meaningless answers. But don't be the tool who wants to pretend that if you can only get rid of Stephen Harper all will be well.
Have you written to your MP about the upcoming copyright legislation yet? - issachar, on 01/16/2008, -0/+0@ Speeed
I see you were right. I stand corrected.
I was running off the levy/legalizing argument which I'd heard before. Thanks for the link. What I find interesting is that there doesn't appear to be anything in it about the levy so if you abolished the levy the decision would still hold.
Interesting... I wonder if the same would apply to video. It stands to reason, but law need not necessarily be reasonable. - issachar, on 01/15/2008, -0/+0That would be why they lost this case so fast. The decision came down in less than 24 hours and the reasons given for the decision are only six paragraphs long.
- issachar, on 01/15/2008, -1/+0you mean follow....
- inactive, on 01/14/2008, -1/+0Good thing this was shot down.
- issachar, on 01/15/2008, -1/+0I do believe that that's not the case. It's a reasonable argument you could make, but I doubt that it's actually in a judicial decision.
- Zorkon, on 01/14/2008, -3/+2Google for Nettwerk ... ah here, I'll just do it for you: http://www.nettwerk.com

- issachar, on 01/15/2008, -2/+0Hey Canada still cool! You pay later!
- issachar, on 01/15/2008, -3/+0on topic. stay on topic. We don't care about your politics.
