- jay42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48I have to say, it looks pretty good in red. Also it was good of Apple not to just jack the price up, this is coming from their profit margins.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -7/+54I'm not sure why you think that.....I loved the mini. The aluminum feels great in yor hand, and is much harder to scratch. Personally, I'm glad they brought the form factor back.
- Endemoniada, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42Wow, someone sure didn't take their chillpills this morning...
- Settra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Because most of the kids in Africa are BORN with it you *****
- northerncomfort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Try to learn a bit before you open your mouth ever again.
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I think your reference to women 'sleeping around' is misguided.
In the 90s and recently many women were raped by soldiers. Hardly their fault. - OSXpert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I think one of the deals in being part of this organization is that you don't up the price. The idea is that by being "red" you will bring in more customers, sell more products, and thus can afford selling it at less profit. The official Red site proclaims that while it's donating 100% of profits to AIDS medicine, it's a business model, not a charity.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18i like the new AJAX-y web style apple is using to show/hide the tech specs on their web page.
I think this is a great initiative from apple. Do you think if they donated $10 from the green ipod to greenpeace it would make them STFU? - Iceduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18It says that the goal is to fight AIDS in Africa. I hear it's a pretty serious issue over there.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Red Kool Aid is damn good, and you know it
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24Zippo: "Kudos to Apple for caring, too."
Makes perfect business sense; Apple looks good and gets to sell lots more expensive iPods. People get to have their cake and eat it- prominently (and constantly) showing what generous and caring people they are via the uber-fashionable iPod.
I tried not to get too annoyed when writing this; even then, I know it's going to get responses like "it's still $10 going to aids that they wouldn't have got otherwise" or someone asking why don't I could skip the price of my next 2 or 3 meals at McDonalds if I'm so sanctimonious about it.... but I still feel that way.
It's caring as fashion accessory, choosing your pet causes as a consumerist self-expression lifestyle choice... and I ***** hate that. It's like a self-congratulatory charity fashion show, where everyone gets to feel smug for being the same self-centered tossers that they always are.
Sure, it's money going to a good cause. I've no problem with that... but it doesn't require Apple or the customers to be pure of heart. On the contrary, if Apple got no extra publicity nor sales boost from this and were still willing to bite the $10 loss, and/or the customers paid more for an iPod that looked totally normal, I might believe it.
So, yeah. I'm glad they're getting the money, and it's a good cause. And maybe it's true that ultimately letting people pretend (or genuinely believe) that this self-interest is all being done for generous motives is a better way of getting money. Just don't expect me to tell them what nice people they are. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"That’s because $10 from every iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED sold goes directly to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa."
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Also education is minimal. There is a lack of funding for education on prevention and stopping the spread of HIV. I'm pretty sure this money will go to a good cause.
- jvicinanza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11oh bugger.. I just received my green nano... now I want a red one!
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i'm pretty sure the differences will only be aesthetical.
- kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15It's only $10 though, I bet Apple are still making a very tidy sum from every one of these charity iPods they sell. While it's better than nothing, it still feels like a token gesture to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20The red nano looks so awesome.
Pity I have no money. - math20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"because of coperations greed"
I know, publicly traded companies should give away all their very expensive medicine to 3rd world countries because it is the right thing to do; give me a break Clearz. If private charities want to use their money to help 3rd world countries by purchasing medicine or if pharmaceuticals choose to help countries like that it is perfectly ok but if jokers like you want to make, by force, all companies give away their profits for the "common good" you can suck my balls. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11To me, the Minis always felt gritty in my hand... I didn't like the texture at all. I much prefer my smooth 4G.
I'm willing to give the new Nanos a chance, though, and I really like the look of the red Nano. Kudos to Apple for caring, too. - abdulla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What about size? I definitely prefer a nano just simply for the size.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@mezoko: you sir are an idiot and you wreak of sheer ignorance.
- becknell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I think they look great. I also really love the red. Just got paid today so, yeah, definitely getting one.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Too bad you can't cure being a total assoholic.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8mezoko's comment is a perfect example of how the First World has allowed the AIDS crisis in underdeveloped nations to go virtually ignored. Anyone who puts a moral clause on their willingness to fight human disease is alarmingly immoral themselves.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If it was 8GB, I would have bought one immediately.
- ChzPlz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8To oversimplify things... It is red because it is associated with Bono's philanthropic organization called (RED). With the brackets.
Bono lobbies big companies to make a red version of their product with a percentage of profits going to (RED). (RED) then gives 100% of their profits to fight AIDS in Africa.
There are (RED) cell phones, credit cards, clothes, etc. - guytoronto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You're a douchebag.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Surely apple users don't need to worry about the virus?

- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@zybch (2nd comment)
no, it's red... last time i checked; read wasn't a color - miller75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks like it will be a big seller at Target. ;)
- artdugg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or you could just give $10 directly and save $189 +tax/shipping
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It does look pretty good. If you're interested in an iPod nano, this would be a good one to get. $10 bucks to a worthy cause to boot. I'm not kidding myself that Apple STILL isn't making a buck or three on this model though.
I already have a black 1st gen nano so I'm not looking for a new one. I'm waiting for the first real video iPod before I buy another. 2.5 inch screen (or 3 inch screen Microsoft) doesn't interest me for watching video. 4 inches is about the minimum AFAIC. - smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You pay a premium for the small size... not the capacity.
- tvc15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Many people don't have 30 gigs of music/data. 4 is enough for them. Battery life is better. The difference in weight is important for people who move alot. I know people who find the Minis to be too heavy and only use shuffles. And two of them are ditching their old 'big' shuffle for the new ones. In short other people have different needs than you do. Personally, I'm with you. I only get the biggest capacity since my iPods never really leave the side of the stereo or computers. I only use them to hold my CD collection so I don't have to dig through a boxes of jewel cases looking for the one i want to play.
- engele, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5More Apple bashing. So a company does something that is socially responsible and gets trashed for it? I really don't get the "I hate Apple" attitude. Apple doesn't have the cash to give away that Bill gates has, Bill gates isn't giving away Microsoft cash, and this will generate more money than Apple could normally get away with giving because it will drive sales. Quit talking trash and thank them for doing something rather than sitting by and watching. Microsfot is not an angelic company. They have been convicted in anti-trust cases all over the world for unfair business practices. So maybe the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation gives away a lot of money, but it wasn't cleanly earned. They way I see it the whiners would rather see a theif give away a large sum of stolen money than see an honest businessman give what he can afford. Crazy logic if you ask me?
- padfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't see one at the Australian store.. Maybe Steve decided that we Australians wouldn't be interested in helping fight AIDS..
- Endemoniada, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Crap, I so want one. The only drawback is that I want one that stores 40GB, not 4.. :(
But I do love the 24h battery, awesome new casing and the fact that it's so freakishly thin. Kind of worried it'll snap in my back pocket, though :) - torpedobird, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Token gesture or not, it is nice to see a company like apple making this move.
They have always been very forthcoming in world events, the pacific tsunami and hurricane katrina here are good examples of where they urged donations.
Every company is around to make money, that is capitalism. That doesn't mean they can't help others from time to time.
Think of the millions of ipods sold. Even if the red nano is one tenth of that, it is still going to bring in a million or two. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@copperkid; You assume that every adult who has unprotected sex has a free choice in the matter. Like it or not, this is not the case for many women in Africa.
It's also one of the major problems I have with the "abstinence not condoms" message some Western bible-bashers are pushing as part of the "education" programmes in Africa. That, and the fact that they're clearly more interested in pushing their moral agenda than in the end result of reducing Aids. (You had sex and got Aids? Then it's your own fault and you deserve to die. Never mind that you had little choice in the matter, and that the man you slept with believed our lying propoganda about the ineffectiveness of condoms, so chose not to use one). - ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is part of a product line called the red product line. All sorts of companies are having products to support the one campaign.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@nogood -
no doubt you are right, the majority of people participating in this would not do it if it meant any genuine sacrifice on their part. this is human nature, it has never changed and never will.
as you suggested, even if apple is profiting from the advertising goodwill and the yuppies get a cheap way to feel like they're contributing, perhaps some net benefit can come out of this in the end. - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It's always so fascinating how some people have such internal fear of anything gay that they actually take the time to post something both hateful and irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Classy.
- Metman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4While I certainly appreciate the efforts of Apple to help the fight on Aids, why is it that companies (such as Apple and many others) only 'donate' to these causes when they can improve their market share or profit margins?
Seriously, I am not trying to bad mouth Apple or take away from their efforts. It just seems like many companies do this with their own bottom line in focus and not just the cause. - fightstrife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4yeah 10 bucks is pretty lame, I hate seeing these large companies who can donate so much more pull off cheap consumer tricks as far as if you buy our stuff we will donate a faction of what we charge you to x foundation give me a break, apple is just like every other money grubbing corp.
- PixelNurse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know if this will be available in the UK? So far it isn't showing up in the UK store.
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ingorant comments like this helps me decide the people I need to block on Digg :-)
- jkoke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Metman,
I don't understand. How does donating $10 from the profit for each of these iPods sold increase their profit margin? As far as market share goes, Apple already has 80%+ of the flash-based mp3 player market -- this is unlikely to increase it that much. Apple has three options in this...
1. Don't donate anything
2. Donate anonymously
3. Donate publicly, raising awareness and increasing sales of the red Nano (which increases donations).
Seems like #3 is the logical choice, both for Apple as a business as well as for the charity. - horanghee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Clearz,
"Choose the iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition and Apple will give $10 of its purchase price to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa." - jads, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3are you going to donate $180 then?
Motorola have had a RED V3 for a while now, American Express have their RED card, so why is it a problem if Apple is now part of product RED? -
