you paid for what you were getting in the box, and searching wasn't in there. hell, neither were games or the spiffy scrolling trick (wait, didn't the mockups of the zune have that last month or something?), but you got those for free.
these trolls need to get over themselves... - RatherDashing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42I love how revolting now-a-days is bitching in a forum. What ever happened to torchs and pitchforks?
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+49@ jcpudd
The difference here is that it is STILL a 5G, and it is simply a software update. Unlike 1G-2G etc.
Although, I really could care less about the search, I'm happy with the scrolly trick thing.
PS: On an unrelated note, did anyone else notice the kind of jaggy new icon for iTunes in Windows? - jcpudd, on 10/12/2007, -10/+41***** like this happens every time there is an iPod upgrade.
I got sort of upset that my 1G and 3G and 5G iPods didn't get the better software each time it came out. But I got over it saying "I got what I paid for."
I didn't get my panties in a bunch like these people.
BTW... I would have been pissed if I couldn't use the new 640X480 TV Shows. Because I bought the 5Gv1 knowing I could by TV shows from iTunes. If they took that away from me, then I would have been super pissed. - iDealL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Stopped usin' em about two centuries ago. Too bad.
- Owiber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31riiiight, so it can decode H.264, but it is incapable of doing a text search... uh huh...
- Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28haha this is ridiculous.
two days ago:
Apple fan: "OMG what new iPod's are they gonna announce??!!?"
yesterday:
Apple: Check out these new iPod's with these new features!
today:
Apple fan: "WTF now mine sucks! SCREW YOU APPLE"
what the....? - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25the search function is overdue. i'd love to have it on my ipod. hopefully it is something that can be available with a firmware upgrade.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20I can understand not providing an update for, say, 4G iPods. They want you to upgrade, fair enough. But this is exactly the same generation. Why would anyone ditch their current 5G iPod for this new one? I can't believe anyone would, because it's the same thing, save for a couple of minor improvements. It just seems wrong that something like this wouldn't be made available for the whole generation.
Are we gonna get into a situation where adding something as minor as a brightness control and search screen will be worthy of a whole new purchase? That's ridiculous. It wouldn't even be so bad if they charged $10 for the firmware - just make it available to people that already have the SAME hardware you're trying to resell to them.
- Apple user - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16ill bet they're not.
- tingham, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17There's a history of leaving older units in the dust. Nothing shocking.
- boozedrinker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I think one user in the forum said it best when they said:
"While it would be nice to have a search feature on my iPod, you're all forgetting that the ipod was designed so that you can easily find one song out of thousands quickly...If you know anything about your music library, how long can it possibly take you to find something? If you know anything about the song, you can find it by artist, album, song titles, etc. You can also make playlists anytime you want. How long could it take you to find a song, like a minute? Please."
Who cares, seriously? - afeitarse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Well, I have a wikipedia program on my 3G that allows text searching, so I doubt it would *really* be a hardware issue.
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"PS: On an unrelated note, did anyone else notice the kind of jaggy new icon for iTunes in Windows?"
The icon is cool. Did you also notice that you only need to touch and release the wheel for the screen to light up. Before, you had to move you finger on the wheel, thus changing the volume a bit. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -15/+24I guess they never thought it might be just a *bit* more complicated than adding some new firmware, for example the processor speed, available RAM, etc.
If you want the new features, buy the new product. Plain, simple. - shertzerj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@norbiu: That's pretty sweet about the backlight. It's always bugged me a little that you had to move the volume up or down a smidge to get the backlight to come back on (sometimes you would do it and it wouldn't budge but not very often). I'd like to see a list of these "not-really-features" features they added.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13They didn't take it from Zune, it's exactly like a feature in iPhoto thats been around for a long time, only instead of a letter, it shows the month and year of the photos you're scrolling past.
- Thumper13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm grateful that Apple updated my 5G at all. I now have brightness control, gapless playback, and games that are a hell of a lot more fun than the crappy ones on my phone. I've had my 30gb iPod for about nine months. For me to get new functionality out of it after that amount of time is great. I say thank you Apple. I don't give a rats ass about searching. The damn thing is organized already. Just scroll through a couple menu's for god's sake, or can you not live with the fact that there is one lame little function that your 12 year old friend has that you don't?
Go spend mommy's money on a new one if it's so important. - nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Of course, they're more than happy to enable your old 5G iPod to play the new downloadable games, because that means more money.
If they can change the software to play new games, they can certainly change the software to let you perform a simple search. But only one of those is in their financial interests.
Just don't believe anyone who says "they can't". They WON'T - there's a difference. - igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7there is no hardware difference...
and THATS why people are pissed - evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If Apple won't put out the new features that are found on the NEWER ipods on the seasoned ipods, then at least give the option for us folks to purchase the new firmware upgrade for like $5 or something... I don't think that sounds too unreasonable? I mean -- isn't this done with pretty much every shareware software available today on the market that offers upgrade prices? I can't imagine it's a hardware issue...
- paulsmerdon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While I do think it would be the right thing to do, I can't imagine using that functionality very often so I don't really care one way or the other.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm just glad they gave us gapless playback. I don't care if I have the search function or not.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Wow!
It looks like those guys are ready to burn the place down.
Heck hath no fury like a fanboy scorned? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Boy, that escalated quickly.
I mean, that really got out of hand fast... - mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"iPod Owners Revolting on Apple Forums!"
Trust me, you iPod owners are revolting enough ;)
(that was too easy) - cplater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I kind of agree with this complaint. The problem is it's the only feature that's not included in the 1.2 update. The quick scrolling feature is there, gap less playback is (supposedly) there, games functionality is there. It seems like Apple is using the search function to force 5g iPod owners to pay to upgrade to e5g units, even though a lot of the original 5g iPods are only a year or so old.
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have a library of 4374 songs on my 5g 30gig ipod (rev a). I can find any one of those songs in a matter of seconds. The search feature is nice, but I usually know what I want to listen to and can find it quickly as is.
- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -0/+4I was very sad when I found out my 60gb didn't have the live search after the update :'(
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I suspect sooner or later an unofficial firmware patch will appear on the web.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ norbiu
Oh :P I meant more not that the colour was changed, but, the quality seems to be lower than the old one. Kinda weird. Neat about the scroll, didn't notice, thanks. :D - zerplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3maybe you can make your old 5th gen iPod look like a new 5th gen iPod, edit the SysInfo file?
i remember mucking about in there to do some stuff with iPod Linux. Anyone with the new 5th gen iPod want to post there SysInfo file (or really just its contents)?
/Volumes/(iPod name)/iPod_Control/Device/SysInfo - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if someone at iPodLinux or something could extract the firmware of the "enhanced" 5G iPod and make an updater for the original 5G.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4or we can use the new iPod's BRIGHTER screens AS torches...
but I guess in order to do that you have to buy the new iPod and that will be defeating the original purpo....
arrgh...
THIS is the problem.
Old school revolting has become too hard:'( - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It wouldn't be too hard to look at the firmware source and then just make it to the other iPods.
- rworne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Such venom.
Would it be any consolation that as a 3rd Gen iPod owner I managed to get "on the go playlists" as an add-on feature in one of the first few firmware upgrades?
That was a big deal. Up until then, there was no way to make custom playlists away from a computer. This feature never shipped on my 3rd Gen iPod but did on newer ones.
So Apple has thrown a few bones to us legacy owners. - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Steve? is that you?
- vprice509, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2boo hoo.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@estvir
Seriously, do you ever stop crapping over Apple/Linux, ever! On the other hand, one could substitute everything you said word for word for MS products (which you defend so vigorously) and it wouldn't be off the mark.
The difference is, Apple upgrades are upgrades, not bug fixes, security releases etc.
That being said, the search feature should have been included in the older iPods too. Fact, I just returned mine to get the newer iPod. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't care for the search function if you ask me, I already know where all my music is
- DavisTheDigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3SOLUTION: someone get the new ipod, take the software off there, share it, then hav users install it onto their old ipods.
if they are enough people who hav this then they might make an official change. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I would be interested in seeing what hardware differences there are between the 5g and the newer iPods. I went to a local Apple store with a friend who had broken her screen, she wanted to buy the new iPod, and they suggested she just replace the screen. If this is the official stance; that 5g owners are not the target customers, and if the hardware will support the searching function, why can't they release the search function on older 5g iPods?
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5they're not pissed because of the fact that they're bitches and want more than they paid for...
they're (and I'm) pissed because the search function is STRICTLY hardware independent.
meaning that Apple could release a FW update that puts it on last week's 5G iPod and have it work just fine. It's the fact that Apple is too much of a bitch ass company to do so (i normally like Apple, just not since Tuesday) - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Luckly for me, they gave us backlight control and not search instead.
I dont give a rat's ass about search, but lowbacklight lets me watch movies with less power consumption (you cant really watch with ZERO backlight) Still, itd be NICE to have the text scrolling, but meh. - NoNom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nah. His avatar would be a turtle neck.
- blankartist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hey - what *is* the scrolling trick. I have a 5G iPod, and I must say not being able loop around from Z back to A in the list TOTALLY blows chunks (and It's only getting worse with each new artist I add).
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@ Briandt75
The people know that a simple software update could fix everything, that's why they're pissed. You can't really compare this situation to the PlayStations or the Nissan thing (see below).
"It would be nice, yes. But to demand that they update the older 5G iPods is like demanding that Nissan come out to my house and install all the new features that come out in 2007 on my new 2006 truck." - ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As Apple becomes the big large company again, it begins to anger its customers. Something almost every company does. Sad. I remember a long time ago when people loved Microsoft as a cheaper alternative to the locked down and super expensive Apple machines, and Apple was the big bad guy (or Dell versus HP and Compaq and everyone else). Things changed and they all swapped positions. Its interesting to see Apple doing this in the music world now.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Unbelievable the amount of people defending Apple on this...it's a freaking software update and how hard is it for them to include the search feature if they're including the rest? It's a blatant slap in the face because they specifically had to sit there and be like "No, no search for you" so they could make those Apple zombies buy a whole new iPod for that lame feature.
- waz67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a 4G iPod, and I'd be happy if Apple just fixed the firmware so that the UI didn't slow down like molasses whenever I plug in the car charger.
