Captain Obvious strikes again! - chrisgeleven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Or you could buy a red iPod nano, and then donate on your own as well.
That way it is $10 + whatever your donation is. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18only in America. In asia (forget which country, probably one with asians in it) they're already testing a possible cure for almost every type of cancer.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Your tinfoil hat is slipping over your eyes...
Maybe thats why you cant read how ridiculous you sound?! - screenwalker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I guess I will be dugg for that but if people don't like the truth its not my fault.:-)
First of all does any of the here actually know what the Global Fund is? Well just in a few words: It does not implement i.e. they do NOT buy medicine or provide any service - It is almost only passing on money to (corrupt) governments that it has received from (G8) governments - It was/is an experiment by the UN and the G8 (UN insiders say it's even worse then the Oil for Food program)
Out of the USD 2 Billion so far rolled out through this mechanism very likely most of it went into a lot of things (?arms) but AIDS or the other two pandemics.
On the other side - what Apple is doing in the RED Campaign is a practice tried out in Europe a few years ago but now extremely unpopular there - fooling customers to pay more for the same product by appealing at their social conscience and then keeping the extra profit besides a minimal amount.
Let me explain in some simple steps what happens when you buy your great gadget from let's say Apple at a (RED) premium:
You donate ($100) => Apple (keeps $99 - donates 1%=1$) => TGF(keeps ??? - passes on e.g. 0.7$) => (corrupt) Country Government (keeps ??? - passes on e.g. 0.35$) => Charity / UN agency (keeps e.g. 25% - uses 0.25$ to by medicine) => Pharma company (keeps 50%, provides goods) => AIDS patient in country gets goods for about 0.1$.
Well seems like your $100 have financed a whole industry but not the people in need. So if you want to donate money there are many better ways to do so then falling for cheap advertising tricks. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12they should really make it so that $10 of EVERY ipod goes to AIDS research. I hate the Red Ipod. I know a lot of people like them for their rarity, but I want to help AIDS research AND get a black iPod, am I such a bad person?
- plnegative1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"they make too much off aids and cancer."
They would make BILLIONS literally BILLIONS if a cure for AIDS and cancer was developed. You are ABSOLUTELY out of your mind to make such an assertion. - neggbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_Red
- boxc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ screenwalker
ok, i'll bite:
"fooling customers to pay more for the same product by appealing at their social conscience and then keeping the extra profit besides a minimal amount"
apple charges the same price for comparable product red ipod..
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodnano
you seem to have.. no point to make. - pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15But you don't get to feel good while buying a cool red iPod nano.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Mine says, "Redeemable for one free AIDS vaccine at participating clinics."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6People wont buy the Ipod just to donate money.
People who already need an ipod might buy it because part of the funds will be donated to a good cause.
whats so difficult to understand about that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9and yeah. BURIED AS LAME
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I bought a red ipod and had "EVERYONE HAS AIDS" etched into it.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8digg ought to donate a $0.01 each time someone diggs a story! :)
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7ok... seriously... I'm sorry that I'm out of the loop, but what the ***** is this PRODUCT(RED) business? I know I'll get burried, but someone please just explain it.
- cannibaljp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i had a woman in a bar walk up and thank me for buying a red nano (i was showing it off to a friendat the time). she said that she has a friend with HIV and that she is really glad that people are buying products that ID them as someone who is helping out.
i thought that the whole thing was pretty surreal, but cool... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8The US Government already spends about 10 billion dollars a year on AIDS research for a disease that is totally preventable. Save your money for mostly unpreventable diseases like cancer, heart disease or strokes that affect far more people.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@insomniac
WTF!!!! Aids is result of Gay sex????? You CRETINOUS MALINFORMED FOOL.
Aids is transferred by any sex, straight, gay, oral - blood transfusions, any blood contact with someone e.g. drug needles, or even having an open wound and not covering it when u go to a WC which has had someone prev there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8what if you got it through blood transfusion or a child got it from a parent. stop being so ignorant.
- AliceKK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4the spread of AIDs in countries like africa is not due to lack of sexual protection (though its a factor) but malpractice of medicine and improper care of syringes and such >.<
Also, AIDs can be spread THROUGH a condom, the virus is actually small enough to get through the holes in one. Dont be ignorant, and be aware! - streak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Become an Apple developer, buy the black nano at a discount, and donate your $10 separately.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"and I own Apple stock, so keep buying!"
what kind of a false economy is that? - streak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you're a developer, receiving developer pricing on nanos, after subtracting the $10 donation, Apple actually makes considerably *more* on the (RED) than on all of the other colors/models. In this case, Apple isn't exactly emptying its pockets.
- lunasunshine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@ahronzombie
You do realize most of the healthcare costs of chronic disease like AIDs and cancer revolve around cost of labor (ie. nurses, doctors, pharmacists) right?
Finding a "cure" for these sort of diseases will most likely produce one of two scenarios:
a) chronic medical supression (via surgery, medications, lifestyle modifications, etc) of the disease. this will include very regular health visits/checks to insure health has been maintained (ie. disease has not re-established itself) and most likely chronic drug therapy (think clopidogrel in stent patients to inhibit restenosis/thrombosis)
b) universal vaccination. think small pox. this required every single person to receive a vaccine for many many years. the market of an entire country (versus select populations within that country, to target specific diseases) is huge.
not finding a cure for catastrophic chronic diseases is not a win for drug companies (or "medical companies"). they would much rather their patients be alive. in fact, the patients who survive chronic disease (ex HIV/AIDs, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, etc) are much "sicker" and require many more drugs/doctors visits than healthy counterparts.
big pharma has many many faults and i hate to argue on it's side, but saying:
"do you really think the man and all the medical companys would let a cure slip out. they make too much off aids and cancer."
is ridiculous.
my 2 cents, as a pharmD - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's a campaign by Bono and some other guy to get companies to create products, which will be Red, and labeled Product (RED). Basically, it's to become a brand, and in order to be allowed to use the branding, the companies involved have to agree to donate a certain portion of sales of the product to the global fund to fight AIDS.

- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Exactly. Why should you say no to making Apple + other companies empty their pockets a little bit?
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Bling bling.
- cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me ... or was that a retarded racist comment?
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2“CEOs in the USA are overpaid. ”
~ Captain Obvious on American CEOs - pvdnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1about the cost of a Shuffle (~ $79)
- pvdnyc, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1huh?
- shoeshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course you don't have to buy something to donate, but it's nice to have something in return for your donation. Ranging from wristbands to ipods, it's nice to have.
- DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Steve Jobs makes a dollar a year from apple.
- skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes, you guys understand. now look at the big picture.
Apple = teh ghey
Steve Jobs = teh ghey
Kevin Rose = teh ghey
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ghey - coreyb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe I am being cynical and/or obvious, but why not let the companies I buy from donate their profits with the stuff I already buy? I don't need to just give more of my money away, if I buy something, then what is the problem with some of THAT money going to good.
I work hard for my paycheck. I already give about 15% of my earnings to charity organizations, but I don't need everyone and their dog always asking me for more. - rangermatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The biggest problem with AIDS in Africa is the innocent children being born with it. Why don't you do it for them instead? Or would you like to blame them too, for being born there?
- pinky24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the fact of the matter is that I would choose a red Nano over the green, just because of this 'deal'
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Save your money for mostly unpreventable diseases like cancer, heart disease or strokes that affect far more people."
...in this country. I guess people would rather throw their money to people overseas because Bono says so. - DuxDucis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Yes yes, that is all well and good, bu the majority of people can't be bothered to donate. Buying an ipod and saying "oh, this goes towards fighting AIDS in Africa" is so much easier, and justifies that $249 price tag.
Also is the 4GB RED nano at $199, which $10 goes towards RED. Higher margin there... - xptweakerntn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so, how much is an apple share nowadays?
- omarsx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1if ur gonna buy something for being a superficial idiot and want people to think u care some of that money might as well go to something decent in this world.. while its not ideal it still does help .. and whatever helps is a plus anyday
- AliceKK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Apple already gives a significant portion of its profits to charities... This is just another way of raising awareness and getting the people involved
- phytonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think the point is, people always need to buy iPods. And when they buy, they have the option to help fighting aids.
- insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@cpbrown
So you agree with me:
