- mafianinja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Isn't this what Spotlight is for?
- Kryton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I was wondering the same thing. It seems like the mac crowd get a lot of really useful and good looking apps.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17so messy lookin!
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18@kryton
haha. Get a mac. - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i wish it worked with word, and appleworks and iwork documents.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I bet i'm in the minority but I don't like those Wordpress style navigation systems where the most frequented topic is the largest word.
- cheeseman557, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Is there some sort of Windows program that can do the same sort of thing?
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Personally I think iPhoto tagging could use A LOT of work. If they could do something like flickr so you could easily search them.
- ozguralaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Screenshot is here
http://www.thekip.com/Site/about%20kip_files/screenshot_all.jpg - ozguralaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They also noted that "This version of kip is free, but be warned, we’re charging for the next version. So get it now, while you can!"
Hurry up to try it! - shamam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I love Quicksilver, but this isn't the same thing at all.
- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I second WP docs support. I want to be able to organise all my existing docs, without needed to mae them all PDF when I do. iWork and MS Office support would make this a real contender.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6how long before this puppy is sherlocked
- musichris777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5if only it had a better layout and a better icon
- xenlab, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Between Quicksilver, Spotlight, and Spotlight Folders... do we really need this?
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes and it's been around for a VERY long time. It's called PaperPort and a Lite version was included with most scanners for the past 10 years. It used to be known as Visioneer PaperPort but was sold off from their hardware division a few years back and then sold to ScanSoft and is now apparently owned by Nuance.
BTW, I really like the looks of this Mac app though. I'll be downloading it!
Here's linkage:

These guys used to own it and it is still included with their scanners:
http://www.visioneer.com/ - nofear1az, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree.... kinda messy looking, I don't like the kip cloud on the right, annoying to see different size words and I hate when things move when I mouse on them. Needs work to be cleaner or allow features to be turned on or off.
As of now, I wouldn't be inclined to pay for this and prolly won't be much more interested in their next version unless they add more improvements. I will be testing out the the scanner feature down the road. - DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Spotlight and smart folders works great without another app taking up space on my HD.
- eyreka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6eh! try Quicksilver ( quicksilver.blacktree.com/ ), it does so much more and it stays out of the way. For a nice intro download "Macbreak 12: Quicksilver" from iTMS.
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn I hope they're not incorporating this in my browser's history! I wouldn't want a huge 'blowjob' displaying each time I look for something...
- muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4LOL I wonder if this letter is for real:

Keeping the deposit for 12 pieces of tupperware :D XD - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This program is well done, but it has a big problem: it wants to "own" all your pdfs (it copies them to its own directory). That's fine if you only ever interact with your documents through this kip, but if you want to also use other tools - for example if you organize your documents in folders already - then that's just bad.
- Millan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is an excellent tool! Thank you for posting it on Digg!
- Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've personally had problems with scanners on Mac OS X - and if this helped that problem I'd be all for it. Does anyone know why scanners don't exactly play nice with OS X?
- gulker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Last year, I started a project to convert my life to as paperless as possible using a couple of big, cheap, networked hard drives. I've converted as many accounts as possible to email and online billing, and for all the other stuff, a small fast ScanSnap converts paper bills, receipts, bank notices, DMV stuff et al. to PDF.
Goal was to spend as little time as possible dealing with the conversion and archiving, without sacrificing the ability to find things for taxes, dispute resolution et al. later on.
When I heard about kip, I thought it might make a nice front end for the paperless project. Of particular interest was the automatic keyword generation and tagging. My experience and a description of the system are here:
http://www.gulker.com/wp/2006/07/27/paperless-project-advances/ - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree, it would be nice if creating new keywords and assigning them to images wasn't the pain in the ass process it is - hopefully it's something that Apple will amend with the next version if iPhoto to be included with iLife' 07
- GodsHand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very ugly.
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Useless to me unless it works with Word documents and .txt files
- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@shokk I'm sure many people will disagree about the "no need for tags" bit. Spotlight also searches inside PDFs but tags are useful for narrowing stuff down. Or, say, if you want to add tags such as "todo" or "e-mail to x" or "project y", that way you don't forget what files you need for a certain task, and it's easier to find if the files are completely unrelated except for those tags.
I mean, yeah, it's possible to go without them... but so much more useful with them! - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@shamam
Quicksilver has a File Tagging plugin that streamlines the process of "tagging" your files with Spotlight comments and using Spotlight to show files matching the tags. - FreemanOShea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yup.
That's just it - for photos we need the visual representation of catalogues, stacks and so on, but for text?
Who cares where it is, or how it is organized when spotlight can find any word inside the document?
Nice app but designed for an out-modd way of thinking about DAM (Digital Asset Management)
Cheers,
F - suppaibeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not a bad idea, although this app is ugly as sin. Did they do the UI programatically instead of using IB or something? There are so many tiny things wrong with the UI I wouldn't even try to put this on my Mac.
- T-Bird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's somewhat ugly. But I really like the idea. I've got a lot of documents that need to be tracked...this should help.
- Dari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Use it before you knock the UI.
- gwenli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3As TMBG would say, "S-E-X-X-Y". This tool totally rawks. I can't believe I haven't seen it before!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cheeseman557, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is Picasa.
- mrdlcastle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The tag feature is cool. Especially for those pdf documents that are just images. I would make the tag window smaller and build in the ability to create folders.
Very handy tool for those using 10.3.x and below. For 10.4 and above, I would use the Spotlight Comments to add tags and then use Spotlight to find the files I am looking for. - h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2exactly what i was going to type.. it's already built in.
- obezyana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing.
I can tag stuff with Quicksilver or cmd-I and then find it with Spotlight... built-in keyboard shortcuts which I'm already used to are surely much easier than downloading and learning to use a whole new program, no?
I may download it and give it a try; I've got enough e-books in .pdf format I'm sure I can find some use for it. But it's going to have to be really impressive to beat what I've already got. - dzarkw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It looks like that web site was done in iWeb.
- Stecchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The purpose of this app is not the same as Quicksilver and any comparisons to it are pointless.
- chevyorange, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I could be wrong (at work) but do I vividly recall .pdfs being allowed in iPhoto?
- Hershey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1VERY KOOL!
- sshack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been wanting to do this for ages. Scan all my documents and have them searchable.
I was going to develop something like this for gnome, but the dev tools were too slow.
I was going to do it again for OSX. But, spotlight+canon's scanning tools already
did it for me. Just scan everything into pdf then use spotlight to search the pdf's.
Still, this is pretty cool. - Codee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The coolest thing in the app is the Constitution and a scan of The Declaration Of Independence.
- smigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My question is does it do any organization of the files? I like how Iphoto and Itunes takes my photos and music and puts them in their own directory sorted by date or artist/album. This would be the most helpful for me since I have pdf strewn throughout my HD.
smigs - Baloo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I downloaded it... but I do question whether I need this..
Spotlight works wonders, now if I was using my windows computer... well then.... things might be different. - kentmartin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The site appears to be having trouble - you can download it here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30112&vid=298578
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A couple of years ago, I found the best thing ever for taking care of all that paper you don't want around but still need copies of. I bought a Fujitsu SnapScan. 60ppm double sided scanning.
I also got a copy of ReadIris Pro for OCR, and I have set up the scanner to pipe the data directly to OCR, and then just save each file. I have fully indexable and searchable PDF's, and I can just type in something like "hennepin county property tax 2002" into Spotlight, and it finds the document almost immediately. - LuisM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3very interesting idea, I would Love to try it.
the pic of the team in the other hand... I mean, they try so hard to look "cool" that is just sad. -
