- rebotfc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+27Now what it needs is the ability to initiate a Spotlight search on a remote mac with quick view.
The ability to instantly search any of my macs on the net via 'back-to-my-mac' style technology from the iphone would be great. - cgruber, on 11/13/2007, -1/+17So what are you going to search for? I guess you could search the mp3s/vids but what else?
- course6, on 11/13/2007, -2/+9In a perfect world, that's the way it would work. Hopefully, apple will be kind enough to provide it. However, flash prices will drop, hardward will become faster (3G? n-wireless?), so there will always be incentive to buy newer hardware.
- taxali, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8So if you're happy with how the iPhone looks, all you have to do is keep getting the updated firmware. That way, you can get the "new iPhones" without actually buying anything.
- llsethj, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8Appleinsider has a better record than Piper Jaffey. Why are they taking info from them?
- course6, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Email is the killer thing I want to search. (smart email folders would be nice too). Or, if you have tons of music, I guess you could search that? Outside of email, spotlight would make the most sense if they also provided manual drive access. Then I can stop using my email as a "File System."
- oferrer, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5That was my first thought as well, but you could also search emails as said above, notes, calendar events, safari bookmarks... Plus ideally once the SDK is released, if we get filesystem access we could also get to search through our files just like spotlight.
- Billions, on 11/13/2007, -5/+9Seems like it's going to be taken care of... What will you troll about then? I know you'll find something, scout!
- crackintosh, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4If you ever use one you'll see that its super easy to find contacts on the iPhone. especially if you use groups. I have never had a problem, even with hundreds of contacts.
- ozziek, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4To hell with spotlight - give us 32gb models so the iPod aspect is usable, 3G so we can actually surf at reasonable speeds and Activesync/Exchange to keep the corporate boys happy and compete in the Blackberry and WM space. Get all that done and add 3rd party apps (legit) and Spotlight and other features will be welcome.
- Billions, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3Thank goodness, this is a sore spot for even the most staunch iPhone supporters... Cgruber, it would be helpful to search using someone's number or company name if you can't remember their proper name... That's one thing I would like to search sometimes.
- DarkDx, on 11/13/2007, -2/+5This sounds uber cool, very useful if you ask me, but only if it's exactly like the desktop version (eg, you can search the content of the file instead of the name)
But I need:
Camera options (brigtness, zoom, etc.)
Video recording.
I would be very happy with that. - ec92009, on 11/13/2007, -0/+3the indexing can be done on the mac/pc side since they know everything that goes to the phone through itunes.
- deadbaby, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2You could also search SMS messages, google maps, contact information, Preferences, etc, etc.
- bigsteve, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Really? Doubt it.
- deadbaby, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Most aptops have mechanical hard drives which actually spin a magnetic disk at a very high speed (usually 5400RPM+) The iPhone uses a type of memory called flash or NAND which consumes almost the same amount of power while idle as it does while reading.
- pauldy, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Uhm, spotlight????? Hello Apple how about some bluetooth a2dp or at least don't be a frigtard and give us devs the tools to do it.
- mddleNameIsEarl, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2The most obvious thing I'd want to search: e-mail. But in actuality, I DON'T want all my email sitting on a device I might lose in a taxi. So to really properly implement this, they need to get security a lot more right (a less clunky password system with hard passwords for the phone itself, or some kind of pictoral / sound authentication, a way to encrypt all your files, etc.) or commit to searching email on the server side (the gmail WAP client does this really well). I'm increasingly curious how Apple is going to handle security when the SDK arrives. Obviously, these problems exist with or without search. But search definitely exacerbates the exposure to sensitive data. I'll take security and cut n' paste first.
- adamgamble, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Then imagine being able to use quicklook after searching for something. Being able to look at a pdf or spreadsheet on my mac from my iphone quickly would be awesome.
- RyeBrye, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2The feature would be cool, but take a few seconds to think about how the hell you would implement that. You would have to either carry around the index files on your phone - which would fill it up - or you would have to run queries on each machine - which would require them to be on.
- signal15, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Hmm, this is getting closer to the "Soup" which was on the newton. Interesting.
- monkeymad2, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3The way I see it being best is if we were allowed a free "upgrade" when a newer model comes out, that's what happens on other phones on contracts. But Bill Gates and Samuel L. Jackson will become lovers, adopt 4 children, get a dog named Larry, sacrifice Ballmer to General Zod and start living in the French Riviera before apple would even think about doing something like that...
- JabbaDuhHut, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Because we all know the analysts at Piper Jaffrey have such an awesome track record in predicting product releases...
- abandonedhero, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't the computer need to be on anyways? There's no way you can spotlight a computer that isn't on with any purpose.
- neckaros, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Moreover spotligh get notified by the filesystem when there is change. Spotlight don't do a full index everytime!
- TravelTom, on 11/13/2007, -1/+2Yea it would be really great
- masterc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Hopefully never. I'm not sure I want to know what kind of STDs you have in there.
- RyeBrye, on 11/13/2007, -2/+3The LAST thing I would want running on an iphone is mdutil (what spotlight uses to index its crap) - that would eat up all your storage and your battery life would be *****. Dynamic indexing on a phone - one of the dumbest things I've heard yet today.
- tmeyer2000, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1The one place which really needs search is the address book, especially if you have 2000+ addresses and don't remember the exact name, but only say, the company. However this db is fairly static so indexing shouldn't take up too much battery life.
- rebotfc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Yep, the idea is the remote machine would accept the query return the response, it would also serve image files when quick look is activated. All the local iphone would need to do is insert the images into a cover flow interface, and display an animation when quick look is pressed. Pretty simple in technical terms but it would be extremely useful.
Could also then initiate an email of that file to send it to your iphone or google apps or whatever and start editing it. - Gizmort, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1I can't imagine they will wait that long...
- pixelpeer, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1I got digg 666, I must be pretty evil. Just like Google today.
- spyraled, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1over9000, apparently it didn't matter as they've still sold over a million....
- whistlerpro, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Let's hope it isn't slow and badly implemented.
- rebotfc, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1At least one person gets it...
- starlord1, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1No phone can search by number other than pressing it in and typing call... then technically it would tell you who you had called. However I agree that it would be good to be able to actually search on name.
- ttamshadbolt, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1.. oh my!
- neckaros, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1Indexing is a one time thing. After you just monitor change.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1HEY GUYS I HAVE THE BEST PHONE EVER BUT THE MOON ON A STICK WOULD BE NICE
- deadbaby, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1E-Mail, Music, SMS messages, Contacts, Maps, Internet, Notes, and third party apps coming in February.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -2/+2Search? What the heck would it search for? There's almost nothing on there.
- ozziek, on 11/13/2007, -0/+0ok nutzoid. Not sure asking for Exchange and 3G is the moon on a stick - seems to be a feature of most WM and Symbian phones!
- HappyScrappy, on 11/13/2007, -2/+1Oh, that'd be hilarious.
Spotlight significantly decreases battery life on laptops by accessing the disk to index it all the time. So it doesn't seem like a good match for your phone. - tofslie, on 11/13/2007, -4/+3What will be able to search for? We can't put files on it or even copy and paste for that matter.
- inactive, on 11/13/2007, -6/+5well aren't you surprised that this wasn't taken care of BEFORE the phone was released?
- prevajanje, on 11/13/2007, -1/+0searching exactly for what?
- Randomsauce, on 11/13/2007, -2/+1That would be nice.
I wonder if it would be a seperate application, or a touchable icon in the taskbar like it is in OSX. - inactive, on 11/13/2007, -4/+1Actually, they nailed apples stock price to go over 200 like it did. Oh wait no it didn't Apple stock has shed 25% of its value over the last three trading sessions over poor iPhone sales and Leopards underwhelming release. More traditional analysts put its value at $90 a share, so the slide will continue unabated into the coming weeks.
Oh well, looked like Apple was onto something. Guess not. - cloud909, on 11/13/2007, -4/+1Oh wow searching your cell phone... how overwhelmingly useful. /sarcasm
and DarkDx... you don't NEED video recording. Get over it. - EvilAnimator, on 11/13/2007, -6/+1The more you dig me down, the more powerful I become.
