- borninda818, on 10/27/2008, -0/+23megapixels aren't everything
- BrendanSheehan, on 10/26/2008, -3/+21Funny thing is, as an iPhone owner I can attest that its camera, despite being "not too bad", is one of its biggest weaknesses. It needs a 4MP camera that's capable of recording video at decent quality also. A flash for the camera would be welcomed also, as the iPhone is useless when it's not bright.
And on the software front, don't get me started. It's the best phone I've ever owned, by far, but lacks some simple software features it surprisingly shouldn't. I don't use MMS, personally, but they should have added it ages ago for all the people who do. We rarely need copy & paste, but when we do we're ***** out of luck, that's not good enough. Amazing phone, but a lot of untapped potential, still. - jamesgoss, on 10/27/2008, -3/+19and to think, Flickr actually used to be for photography.
- Kakumeikeahi, on 10/26/2008, -0/+13I have issues with the shutter speed. I get far too many blurry pictures
- Mizzike, on 10/27/2008, -2/+10Im an Apple fanboy, but could this popularity be due to the fact that it's so easy to upload to Flickr with the iPhone? I mean, there Flickr apps that upload directly to Flickr after each pic is snapped--no user intervention required. How easy is that?
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+9I have a solution for your problem, it's called buying a camera.
- jasmus, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6Image sensor size, and quality of lens make a huge difference.
- cerealjynx, on 10/26/2008, -4/+9Another reason to jailbreak
http://www.snapturelabs.com/
Paying for jailbroken apps is pretty sucky though. In this case well worth it. - superkendall, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5I had a camera in my RAZR but I never used it as the quality was not good and getting the photos elsewhere was rather a bother.
I'm a very serious photographer and hate the quality of the iPhone camera. Yet I still find myself taking quite a few pictures with it, because it is there and pictures can go elsewhere very quickly. I think it's the ease to get the photos off the camera and onto Flickr that is key. - kplo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4there's definitely an "iphone look" to some photos
- jbow2008, on 10/27/2008, -6/+9im goin 2 assume there is some correlation between a person who has an iphone and a person who uses flickr, hence a person with an iphone is more likely to have used flickr hence the higher popularity of the iphone as the camera phone of choice
- GeckoSlayer, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4N95 has a BUILT IN application for uploading to flickr:P
- jo21, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3yeah but things like carl zeiss, xenon flash and autofocus in the nokia phones.
does make huge difference vs the iphone. - superkendall, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3The biggest cause of that I think, is twofold:
1) The actual picture is taken only after you LIFT your finger from the button that snaps the picture. So people press and think it's taken then, when it's really taken a moment later after they start moving the camera thinking it is done.
2) Sometimes the delay in taking a photo after you lift the button is substantial (on the order of seconds) making it even more likely you'll be moving the phone before it actually takes your picture. - mrsteveman1, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Most people don't carry around a separate camera, they do carry their phone around.
- superkendall, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Because in real life few people use MMS, the iPhone has other means to transfer most data that people would want to copy & paste, and bluetooth drains battery fast enough that using it for stereo transmission when you just want to listen to music is silly.
Plus as a phone, it's actually pretty decent - not terrible. And since most people want a phone foremost... - rubblecovers, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2main reason is probably because it's easier to get photos off the iphone. there are many apps out that let you easily upload photos to flickr from your iphone.
if those apps weren't there, people probably wouldn't bother getting their photos off their phone, which is probably the case with the other phones. - jchrome, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2You don't actually have to load a page to get a photo on Flickr, I don't own an iPhone, but send images to Flickr all the time with my phone. Just take the picture, hit send and a Flickr email address that I setup is the sender address so it just posts it to my photostream.
- se7en11, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I use Fickr as a $25 a year backup of all my pictures. Unlimited space, easy to use upload tools and great UI to share photos with friends/family.
- abajaj2280, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2maybe because the iphone is probably one of the couple devices that can actually load the flickr page.
- level, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2I've had a lot of phones with camera's and the iphone is pretty damn clear. Even though it lacks features it takes pretty damn good pictures.
P.S. Once they come out with Video Chat-watch out-that's the next big step in phone use. They just need to get the networks to handle the amount of video. - jo21, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2its true the V3xx takes better picture and have a macro mode.
- rafe101, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2That's right. The CCD image sensor and lense matters much more than megapixels. My old 2.1 Mp Cannon that I bought 8 years ago takes better pictures than my girlfriend's 5 that she got two years ago.
I believe a SI Swim Suit shoot was done with a 2 Mp not too long ago. - macslut, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2I sure hope the next version of the iPhone comes out with a better camera. If Apple released the next iPhone in 2009 with better quality camera images, camera flash, and video recording, that alone would be worth buying a new one (for the 3rd year in a row). Add video iChat, and I'll be camping out over night for it. From a business perspective, this is what's amazing about this category of device...it's not unique to the iPhone...I can look at the idea of having "near-real-p&s-camera-quality" with me on my phone at all times, and it's worth the price of buying the new phone just by itself.
I have a feeling we're going to see incremental improvements year after year, for quite some time. - doublefelix, on 10/27/2008, -2/+3For some reason I just don't trust you.
- dyranios2, on 10/27/2008, -1/+2yeah I think it has more to do with how easy it is to get pictures onto Flickr, if more mainstream phone manufacturers built apps like that into their phones it would be a different story.
Also iPhone users are more likely to be familiar with internet sites like Flickr, I mean without so much of it being so well integrated with the internet, the iPhone would be a terrible phone, why else would people choose it above a phone that can copy and paste, record video, send MMS and has un crippled bluetooth. - waydee, on 10/27/2008, -1/+2It's not really a case of it being bad because it's "only" a 2MP camera, yes it's a bit dated but megapixels aren't everything. If you compare it to other current and mobile phones released in the past few years you see the problem is more to do with the optics and flash - the iPhone takes pictures that look like they came from a cheap computer webcam while a Nokia or Sony Cybershot phone are getting very close to the quality and features offered by a standalone digital camera and it's all down to having a good quality lens, flash and shooting modes etc.
- mrBitch, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1well, then, there goes THAT reason for why the iPhone still reigns supreme on Flickr ...
- mrsteveman1, on 10/27/2008, -2/+3Yea you must have missed the part where people are taking pictures BECAUSE they have the thing with them all the time.
- superkendall, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1You know what seems odd to me, is that you can get cracked versions of applications you can install via iTunes on an un-Jailbroken phone, but jailbroken apps require you to jailbreak the phone...
To me it doesn't seem like there's anything Snapture is doing with the camera that could not be done with an official SDK app if ti had the API support that jailbroken apps have already uncovered. - eivi, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1To tell the truth, I'm honestly glad you're so hones with us.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1And while you are jailbreaking it you might as well get Cycorder for video recording
- kevyn, on 10/27/2008, -2/+3N95 ftw
- qwertydvorak, on 10/27/2008, -1/+2i am going to assume that all iphone users are just camera whores. they are narcissistic people who think they need to document everything they do.
just kidding. i think the real reason is because they are forced to take a data plan with the phone. my phone has a camera and i have a bunch of pictures on it, but i don't have a data plan or a download cable for my phone. - kingygk, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1That title makes me think that im watching the Japanese version of the Iron Chef!! I miss that show.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1it doesn't
- jacenat, on 10/27/2008, -2/+2he is right.
besides, wasn't this story already on digg? - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1And?
- Lemon, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1iPhone still reigns supreme on Flickr in volume of uploaded content.
There you go. - tnoy, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1EXIF data is by far the most reliable thing to use, too.
*cough* - superkendall, on 10/27/2008, -2/+2Add them up yourself. Combine all of them, and you STILL have fewer photos taken than are currently being uploaded by the iPhone.
- Cherubim, on 10/27/2008, -3/+3Heck, my Moto V3xx takes better photos than this iPhone crap. So does my O2 XDA atom.
Apple .. think shafted - bjs3171, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1the iphone does autofocus.
- MrEdwardo, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1It's funny, my eyes see "own" but my brain thinks "pwn".
- snugsoho, on 10/27/2008, -2/+2I would imagine that most iPhone users are more tech savy than say, the majority of Nokia's handset users are and are therefore more inclined to use services such as Flickr.
Plus I'm guessing if you add all the photos taken using just the Nokia Nserise devices (i.e. N73, N85, N95 etc..) that are uploaded directly to Flickr they Nokia would come out on top. It's kinda like putting all the eggs into one basket. If that makes any sense. - Zippo, on 10/27/2008, -2/+2Notice something with all the other phones? They're all just model numbers. People don't like calling their phone a "K800i" or something stupid like that. Cars aren't called by their model numbers. Nobody wants to hear that you're driving an X43637 or calling on an N95. That's boring and lack personality.
For god sakes, give each model a name! - MacTyler, on 10/27/2008, -2/+2Too I cant bury you as "inacculame".
- ZGambit, on 10/27/2008, -1/+1@snugsoho having an iphone doesn't make you tech savy.
FYI - The iphone camera is ***** and must be considered a huge flaw in the iphones design. Not only that but the graph shown only has a selection of a few phones as far as I see they are pretty old and have new models to replace them.
Remember Apple only has one phone, the other manufactures have tones more :P where is the rest of the selection? - Compserd, on 10/27/2008, -2/+1Wow, not that many people seem to use the phone I have, the N82, which I feel is the best camera phone out there.
