- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+41That's Cockney rhyming slang, not Aussie-talk...
- dreamincode, on 11/19/2008, -11/+50I can't get the damn thing to work right either and I have the "terrible folksy Texan tourist voice." Cause I'm from Texas.
The app just sucks - I haven't had ONE successful query. - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -8/+45Digg me if you think the above comment was just a ploy to get diggs.
- DanteDefiance, on 11/19/2008, -11/+48Interesting...it works for me every single time.
Perhaps you shouldn't blame the app, but rather your short-bus Texan talk. - VerticalEvent, on 11/19/2008, -2/+32I hate to break this to you, but everyone has an accent.
We just don't usually notice accents when we are using them and when other people are using similar ones. - Zippo, on 11/19/2008, -1/+28I wonder how the app will handle if I slipped into a thick Newfie accent.
- synagence, on 11/19/2008, -1/+25What you talking about? "Dog and Bone" and "Trouble and Strife" are not Aussie sayings
And the app does say that it works best with north america accents - mattus, on 11/19/2008, -2/+26Loving the people who seem to believe that American English is 'standard', and any deviation from that is 'abnormal' English. There's not really any such thing as 'standard' English, but if you persist in believing so, you might want to consider that the language is called ENGLISH.
- daimposter, on 11/19/2008, -7/+29british people should just learn to speak English properly.
/sarcasm - serif69, on 11/19/2008, -6/+26Learn ta speak 'murrican not yer *****' Europe-ese or whatever.
/Google - ultrafez, on 11/19/2008, -1/+21I'm not asking you to Digg me, but all of the above comments are just ploys to get diggs.
- Hurricane, on 11/19/2008, -4/+23Digg me of you think these "Digg me" comments suck.
- Games4Life, on 11/19/2008, -2/+20Digg me if you think ultrafez is just faking and he really meant his comment to be a ploy to get diggs.
- ultrafez, on 11/19/2008, -2/+17I know you're being sarcastic, but we did invent English... you copied us... and changed it in the process.
- mare88, on 11/19/2008, -3/+18Obviously, the app has started to read your mind and knows what you really mean. But only if you're from UK.
- bongo, on 11/19/2008, -3/+17Speech recognition is really difficult. And with all the accents out there, it's fairly impossible to get it to work with all of them. If humans have trouble understanding some British accents, think how hard it is for an algorithm?
- ButterLoyalist, on 11/19/2008, -2/+16I have a Midwestern accent, so it recognizes everything I say perfectly!
- mrebay007, on 11/19/2008, -3/+15Tobias Funke: I'd like to go to the "Gothic Castle"
British Taxi Driver: Alright Gothic ***** it is.
Tobias Funke: Thank you. - FredFredrickson, on 11/19/2008, -0/+11Wow, voice recognition technology doesn't work like it does in the movies? This is huge ***** news, guys!
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -7/+18What's the problem here? Aren't British people always using their mobile devices to find anonymous sex?
- mickstephenson, on 11/19/2008, -6/+17Define toning down? making your voice more normal like Americans? how do you define normality?
what a dick. - houndeyex, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Isn't it obvious? Sex is clearly better than fish, cookies, and pizzas combined. Google just provides the best search results that you didn't even know you wanted.
(But secretly you wanted) - monkeymad2, on 11/19/2008, -1/+12Weirdly enough, it's understanding my Scottish accent rather well today.
There's still the odd suggestion of *****, but it's probably 85% right. - DigDugDigger, on 11/19/2008, -1/+11It understands my sexy drunken slurring American accent quite well, surprisingly.
- drlha, on 11/19/2008, -1/+11I'm so glad to see this story, I tried the Google App out this morning and everything translated from my sexy English accent was hilariously wrong.
- iDoraemon, on 11/19/2008, -2/+12It's not working with my Mr. Bean accent either.
/doesn't really have a Mr. Bean accent - 83457, on 11/19/2008, -0/+10"It actually works pretty well, but I have to disguise my (North London) accent with a terrible folksy Texan tourist voice to get results. I can see this is going to be the source of much amusement and confusion."
LOL - triplejay, on 11/19/2008, -0/+10The app clearly states on the Settings screen: "Voice Search only works in English, and works best for North American English accents". I'm an Aussie and it rarely works for me. eg: "You really suck" = "New York"
- passedoutghost, on 11/19/2008, -0/+9@texpundit: You most definitely do have an accent. If you went to a foreign country people would pick you out as an American or even a Texan if they were smart enough. I'm from Australia myself, but my mates say I don't have an accent, however, when I travel overseas and speak English people know immediately that I have an Australian accent.
- csarak, on 11/19/2008, -2/+11texpundit & dcmjzero: Define 'having an accent.' Everyone has an accent to someone with a different accent, so you can't really say that you don't have an accent. To think that your way of speaking is some kind of 'base case' is ... pompous.
Funny how 99% of the people I know also 'don't have accents.' That's because they have the same accent that I do! - scoobycarolan, on 11/19/2008, -3/+11But I love volcanos
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8those bloody cockney aussies..
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8Ahem. Indian English.
- amk29j, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7Google, not Apple, created the app.
- Burn, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Umm, it's spelt 'Aluminium', therefore is pronounce 'al-u-min-ee-um'.
(I know how much you Americans like to strip letters out of words, but that's the correct spelling for the rest of the world). - inactive, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium
dugg down for ignorance - Rockkybox, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7So you claim
- ZyzyxQyzyx, on 11/19/2008, -1/+8It knows what the British want, they want the sex on the kitchen sink with Einstien!
- fuse13, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7No the problem with Australia accents isnt cockney rhyming slang, its the joining of words together.
How you going, mate? ---> Howyagoanmaate?
Thats going to throw out voice recognition. - hiro, on 11/19/2008, -2/+9Exactly, there is no such language as "American", its just a quaint dialect of English (Standard English is from England obviously) with a bastardised Irish/Dutch evolved accent that generally involved mispronouncing most vowels.
A great example of this is my friends father who was involved in the naming and marketing of a range of network music/video players called Roku. They were utterly baffled when, instead of pronouncing it as their bad pun intended, "Rock You", americans all started pronouncing it as "Roe Koo". It still causes much amusement! - krasht, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7It stuffs up when I speak in my native Australian accent. But it does seem work more often then not when I switch to a pretty bad attempt at an American accent.
- AndreasTh, on 11/19/2008, -2/+8Funny, I'm Swedish and it works very well for me :)
- Stepannic, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6How come you guys changed Aluminium to Aluminum but you didn't change Calcium to Calcum, Sodium to Sodum, Titanium to Titanum etc. etc.?
- 0phatpat0, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6You're right, i just did the same test, works pretty well when I speak in a dodgy attempt at an american accent.
- Philbert, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6Yeah I was thinking I'd love to see that from a random British stranger.
- serif69, on 11/19/2008, -0/+6Newfie born and raised, and you pick "I'se da B'y" as a Great Big Sea song to quote? That's like me quoting "Jersey Girl" as a Springsteen song. I might revoke your Newfie card, and I'm not even in possession of one myself...
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7This app didn't like my Boston accent either. "Cookies" was interpreted as "motel"...
