- compreal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33i thought the iPhone would be bigger... i'm very happy it's not.
- PimpinOnWelfare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Does anyone know if this will eventually replace the iPod w/o the phone functionality. It scares me that all the rumors of a new iPod turned out to be false and they bunched everything together in this thing. Don't get me wrong it is badass, but I really don't want to switch to Cingular or pay $600 for an MP3 player :/
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I adore the new iPhone but I'd like to see a 40-80GB ipod only version of this that has more than the iPhone's 4gb or 8gb storage, particularly because I'm stuck on Sprint for the next year or so.
- mmzz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Looks like a perfect size, it's not so easy to lose ;) The screen is actually huge compared to what we're used to. Go Apple! :)
- kurrent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18jesus, i thought my uncle pauly had hairy arms
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Lol, so people can coddle it until the real thing comes out in June?
Nothing says you've never kissed a girl like toting around a paper iPhone. Now I've seen it all! - mfratz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19to be honest....its pretty big for a phone despite how cool it is.
- asuraci, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8He didn't quite exaggerate, the version with more space is $600.
I don't think it has enough space to be bought to be used as just an mp3 player, especially at such a hefty price when you'll only use it for that. A lot of people including me like to just carry around their entire library. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not nearly as "small as *****" as Kevin said...
I think everybody just completely forgot that Kevin got absolutely everything wrong when it came to predicting the iPhone - wordfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8When I first heard about an iPhone I envisioned something small, sleek, and simple. Boy was I wrong - they went completely the opposite direction with it. Don't get me wrong, I really like a lot of things they've done with the phone and I would love to have one. I'm just surprised that they didn't make an iPod phone. This is more like a Macbook phone than an iPod phone.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8for a phone yes, for an mp3videocalenderosxonthego-machine.
not at all. - sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7iHobbit?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Coming from a Treo owner: Uh, it's not that big.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7He forgot to compare it to an 80's brick phone, that's the real comparison.

If you want the big screen, you've gotta go for the thin big machine like they did. Now, I can watch a movie (which would take up half the disk space) with ease. - BangoSkank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Does it scratch just by looking at it, like other ipods.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7knock it off
- danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I have a feeling the 'video iPod' people have been talking about is this device, but we will see a stripped down, slightly thicker version that uses most of the same tech in the near future. No widgets, browser, etc, but same basic form factor.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm disappointed with Apple's full corporate approach to carrier providers. Cingular only?
They start off by advertisign the user interface that is flexible, for the device which potential is limitless and then they slap the exclusive network deal. And brining AT&T into all this? Talk about Net Neutrality idea echoing through the peripherals world...
I was impressed with the keynote tech demo, but once they started bringing in all the big CEO's, my hopes went down.
Well, they switched to Intel's eventually. Perhaps they'll be less reluctant with carriers as well in the near future.
Wonder how long it will take to unlock an iPhone or put a custom linux distro onto. - Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4when you're "the guy who made a cardboard iphone and compared it to a wiimote on the internet", masturbation is a big thing.
- InvertedDonkey, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Im not going to lie to you guys, that dude's got hairy hands.
- cloudcity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I made a foldable (to scale )model today..
http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_printable_foldable_mockup_to_scale_Hold_it_today - deleteyourself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice hairy hands.
- Louis11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4bigger size equals bigger website and video displays. A small screen would greatly inhibit multimedia use. Honestly, it's not that big.
- emellaich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Are there more carriers to be announced"
No, Cingular (AT&T) was announced with a multi-year exclusive arrangement. Why would Apple do this? Either 1) Apple is getting a cut of Cingular's airtime revenue, or 2) Apple has negotiated a lower than standard rate from Cingular for IPhone customers.
I know that #2 is wishful thinking, but its not completely farfetched. Apple has said that iTunes sells songs at break-even and that they profit off of the hardware. Same thing could be happening here. However, if I had to guess, I would guess that it is number 1. I would also guess that Cingular gave them a piece of the pie because they expected a lot of those millions of customers to be new customers, not conversion of existing customers. Finally, I would guess the 10million is a worldwide number. About 2.5 million would be the US share of that. - wphj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://www.duggmirror.com
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2worth it for the spiel at the end.
- mpap89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that isn't scale. it prints out at 44 mm instead of 61 mm wide. and it's like 20 mm short.
mpap - Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25 hour use, cingular and scratch potential makes it useless. For a good PDA, 600 isnt unreasonable. As most of us are avid phone users and a solid majority are aware of the IMPORTANT issues such as coverage area, battery life, ease of replacement, and durability. The iPod sucks any way you slice it. The market will act.
- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He said 4GB/8GB didn't he? And touchscreen? And I think Alex alluded to 16x9, but Kevin was nonresponsive at that point (and AFAIK Alex didn't know). I'd have to watch the episode again. But I don't care.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not the best hand model...
- fume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hopefully it won't catch on fire like mac books. I'm very tempted to switch from Verizon to Cingular just to get it. Maybe i'll just wait until iPhone2 comes out, since it is Apples first attempt at a phone.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4that's exactly what I thought when they started to reveal the iPhone. I thought they were going to go very mainstream consumer with it, make it something like $199 and have the form factor of a Nano.
I'm not saying that the iPhone doesn't have a lot of amazing features, but it's in that weird place where it looks like it'll be a jack of all trades but a master of none. Sure, it has a phone, but it won't be the best phone. Sure, it has iPod-like capabilities, but it won't be as good as an iPod. Sure, it has some OSX-like apps, but they won't be as good as the full versions.
Also, there's the elephant in the room: the price. $599 is way too far out there for almost all consumers. Now, maybe that figure is the raw price, before Cingular knocks it down with contracts and such, but it's still very expensive for a phone - zoozo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BPD.

I wish they incorporated a GPS antenna...that would make it the ultimate gadget...ehh but im just a f-ing critic...still probably gonna end up getting it though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@BESTenemy
As far as the unlocked phone goes: Q4, when it launches in Europe. Just import one and voila, you have yourself an unlocked phone. Some stuff that's done on the network side of things (i.e. the random access voicemail) probably won't work, but other than that you should be set.
If you're like me and looking for CDMA on top of that, you'll have to wait until the Asian launch in '08. And before anyone flames me, yes, I know the iPhone is supposed to be entirely GSM. But seeing as there's not a chance in hell Apple is going to pass over South Korea and Japan, which are entirely CDMA, it's not a stretch to say that a CDMA iPhone is on the horizon. - walterra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good idea :).
I did a comparison to the neo1973 open source smartphone:
http://www.metaportaldermedienpolemik.net/blog/Blog/2007-01-09/fic+neo1973+vs+apple+iphone - rytr23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm how mch talk time on your treo? 4 hours? Yeah.. having an hour more really blows.. Screen protector on your treo/PPC? yeah.. thats what I thought.. GSM so it can be unlocked to work with T-mobile? Oh..so you dont really have to use Cingular...
Next you'll say "hey! but I am on Sprint/VZW".. which is unfortunate for you. chin up, I am sure a cdma version will be released eventually.. and by that time it will probably be a very popular device.. it may even be wi-max for Sprint.. ( this is assuming either of those two companies can deal with selling a phone that they don't control the UI on )
This is basically a lil OSX puter...Even if you don't have Cingy or GSM this still replaces your Nokia 770, ipod, and PDA. Still not bad.. - zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's as small as it can be width and height to have a usable screen for the purpose they intend it to be used. That doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the thickness. It's 0.46" thick. That's nearly twice as thick as my iPod nano. When will cellphone makers realize that we don't want phones that look ridiculous when put in a pocket? I guess Apple just couldn't pull it off technically because of the combined depth of the touch screen plus the battery. I would prefer a smaller screen with a battery offset from the screen so the phone could be a more reasonable thickness.
- Pix869, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is the iPhone meant to be a cellphone device or a normal Home-phone with music players built in? I could see the former more, however I am ignorant of that point at the moment.
If the former is true, it's rather large for a phone, but that's because 70% of the size is just where they store all the awesome, so I can forgive. - danboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With an SD slot (or miniSD slot) this would be even more attractive. Think - add 2 or 4 gigs yourself with an add-on sd card... And carry a few extra cards loaded with movies/music/etc
- igyigyigy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure half of Digg will set up asterix at home and use it as their home phone too :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@BESTenemy
Cingular-only makes sense. Cingular is the only real GSM player in the American marketplace. Personally, I don't see the use in owning a phone that doesn't work outside the United States, so I'm happy to see they went this route.
Now then, the downside is that I've been waiting since my contract expired in November to get a new phone because I assumed Apple was going to introduce the iPhone and MacWorld and wanted to see it first. It's cool enough, but it's not going to be available for another six months and I'm not really sure I'd own something like this, anyway. It's kind of big and clunky to carry around, IMO. Besides, I can't stand candy-bar phones. To me, a clamshell phone is the only way to go. No locking and unlocking the keypad and the buttons are all protected when the phone is closed. So going to MacWorld today freed me up to go ahead and buy a different phone. I guess that's something. - lofan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1apple fan's can then be total solution by apple.. form PC to mobile, and TV, etc...
Steve...u r great.. - Loyaleagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1these kinds of posts are what blogging was meant for, a quick way for people to get their really good ideas out
this guy cirtainly did a good job and hopefully was authentic as he hoped to be! - ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cingular was the only carrier announced
it also used EDGE (cingular's proprietary thing) but i would assume that wifi is used for browsing - KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Former.
- cyberhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only spec that hurts in my eyes so far is the 5hr battery life for active use, oh and I'm in Australia (when will we get it? :( )
- mgflynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool shots. When are they going to add the shaver...for your hands?
- spvaland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I thought my uncle had an iPhone... in the future.
- mscalisi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not only is the cost not exaggerated, it's actually understated. $599 (or $499 for the 4GB version) is subsidised by a two year contract. That means to buy it with no contract would be more like $800
