- umbrellainabin, on 08/01/2008, -8/+37Future Apple Ad 2011: Get the ALL NEW iPhone 4G. Exclusive to AT&T
- peestandingup, on 08/02/2008, -7/+33Honestly, I dont look for Apple to EVER allow the iPhone to be sold unlocked outright directly to the customer. Thats not their bag, baby. Control is.
Android can't get here fast enough. - inactive, on 08/02/2008, -18/+42***** this, I'm getting a BlackBerry.
- Tyrghast, on 08/02/2008, -13/+35Money. Money. Money.
Say what you will Apple fanboys but the truth has always been, your beloved Jobs doesn't care about you as much as he cares about his greenbacks. - NinjaPig, on 08/02/2008, -2/+23It doesn't even matter anymore, who the hell cares anyway...
T-mobile doesn't even have a 3g, not one that matters anyway. - khuongsta, on 08/02/2008, -10/+25this is *****.
get a clue Apple: ATT = ball & chain - Wootstapler, on 08/02/2008, -2/+17Dammit Verizon, why did you have to get so greedy when Apple went to you first?
- randf, on 08/02/2008, -2/+16he is the chief of a big consumer electronics company, and you've just figured this out? economics...get some
- JBabin3xB, on 08/02/2008, -8/+20I can't wait til then!
I want to see how Verizon will ***** up the OS this time - digichris, on 08/02/2008, -1/+13Wow a multi-billion dollar (half-decent IMO) corporation concerned more about money than it's customers. What is this world coming to?
- ShellShock11, on 08/02/2008, -2/+13What did people expect? Why would AT&T do the deal without long term exclusivity? This really isn't news.
- TremorX, on 08/02/2008, -1/+12It's only a year and a half, simmer down. I expected the exclusivity to be 5 years, so this isn't bad.
- jordn, on 08/02/2008, -0/+9Whoosh!
- codyman, on 08/02/2008, -6/+12I think companies like T-Mobile / Verizon etc. should not focus on simply just producing crap in hopes of snagging the iPhone someday, but rather should spend the next couple of years continually innovating their own products...
Less waiting, more innovation...
Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is great, but it doesn't mean it has to be the only phone that matters... - mistergoomba, on 08/02/2008, -1/+7Hey, what do you know? I'm locked to AT&T till 2010 also!
- Me1000, on 08/02/2008, -0/+6and as a customer and a shareholder Jobs has done wonders for my Apple investment!
- ajwinder, on 08/02/2008, -1/+7That doesnt say anything about the actual GSM and CDMA protocols though, just how they've been deployed. Technically speaking the CDMA protocol is much superior to the GSM protocol, it scales better and has better voice quality especially when the network is being taxed.
- Konformitee, on 08/02/2008, -4/+10Who is better? Sprint? Verizon? T-Mobile? CDMA networks blow donkey dick. GSM is so superior it isn't even funny. I can pop the SIM card out of my iPhone and put it in a cheap disposable phone for a few hours while at the beach if necessary.. try that with your Verizon phone. Plus, Verizon cripples all their devices by disabling the Wifi and GPS features of (at least) their Blackberry devices. The AT&T GSM versions of the Blackberry have Wifi and GPS enabled! FAIL!
- stevealford, on 08/02/2008, -2/+7Have you not seen any of the other new smartphones on the market this year? It's not like other manufacturers have been sitting on their hands. Their products may not be the same as the iPhone, but some are better at doing certain things the iPhone can't/doesn't do, some cater to other types of users, and some even have touchscreens. People who complain about no front-facing camera, no MMS, no copy/paste, or any other myriad complaints we've heard will be able to find plenty of top-shelf phones on the market currently that aren't exactly "crap" as you put it.
Just because it's not the iPhone doesn't mean it sucks. - shank2001, on 08/02/2008, -0/+5Well, I switched from Verizon to AT&T for the iPhone. #1... yes the network is not nearly as good as Verizon. I had 3G almost everywhere with Verizon... with AT&T it seems extremely spotty. This is the network's fault, NOT the iPhone's because my friend who is waiting on his iPhone (he has to go through business channels) has ATT already with his current smarphone, and we get the same results where ever we go. That said, there is no way I would switch to any other smartphone currently on the market. To me the iPhone is worth it so much that I don't mind using EDGE where that is the only signal available. And this is in Orange County CA, where I would think the 3G service would be very good. I really hope AT&T builds out their network better soon. But I am still glad I switched.
- omarqaz7, on 08/02/2008, -1/+6The iPhone is Triband 3G. It works on all 3G spectrums.
- stevealford, on 08/02/2008, -2/+7He was making a prediction... wow.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+5Calm down. I am glad to hear you were insulted by being called a creationist. I was talking to the creationist, not you. I was simply pointing out that a creationist might not have the best judgement and they don't care about access to facts and reality. Reading this out by my pool reminded me of one of the reasons I like it.
- 4NDr01D, on 08/02/2008, -2/+6neither does most of the boonies
have you looked at AT&T's 3g coverage ?
its pitiful
meanwhile, South Korea, is already test 4G networks
with 1gbps data packets. - rytr23, on 08/02/2008, -2/+6Wow.. a whole 451 million around the world? with ~140m in the US? Gee, I guess you can ignore those pesky 2.8 BILLION GSM users that look like they are oh.... everywhere outside of N/A, Korea, and Japan.. wow.. I guess thats why Verizon's own "World-phone" Blackberry has GSM you moron.. seriously, the number of countries your cdma phone will work is a pittance compared to any quad band GSM phone.
please... stop trolling your CDMA propaganda.. It's dying an all too slow ,but inevitable death - johnpaul191, on 08/02/2008, -0/+4unfortunately i don't think Verizon will ever get the iPhone. They hack the OS of every phone they sell (right?), even the Treos.
Verizon does handle their smartphones differently than other phones. For example, they don't even bother offering VCast on smartphones. Maybe they would be willing to lose the music sales etc just to have the phone on their network? - inactive, on 08/03/2008, -1/+5I like having the ability to instantly find out if someone is telling me the truth. I feel good having the ability to access the collective knowledge of humanity at all times. With out an iPhone, I used to spend too much time sitting in front of a computer.
I have a feeling that some of these stories about iPhone users go like this...
George Bush: The world is 6000 years old!
Richard Dawkins: No it isn't look
George Bush: These iPhone users are arrogant ***** that brag about their toys to look cool. - johnpaul191, on 08/02/2008, -1/+5seriously...... ugh
- inactive, on 08/03/2008, -1/+5But you are also a creationist. I am not saying this to insult you, simply to point out to others that you think differently than them.
- p51d007, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3One of the reasons you see a TON of options for different phone (outside the USA) is
because the phones in the USA are subsidized. If you think an iphone is actually 199
something is wrong. Overseas, you buy the phone at a more expensive price, then hook it up to any carrier (with the same tech as the phone) you want. I'd rather see
unlocked, unsubsidized phones in the USA, then pick the carrier. Between the big box electronic stores, target, wal-mart & the internet, the prices wouldn't be that bad, and we'd have the latest technology instead of having to wait a year or more.
I've bought several unlocked phones off the net because I got tired of waiting for them to show up in a wireless store. Not to mention, the unlocked/unsubsidized
phones don't have the crapware that the carrier branded versions have. - dcbebop, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3Ball and chain == money in pocket. I think they _have_ a clue.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 08/02/2008, -5/+8As it stands now, the iPhone's only option in the US is AT&T because the other carriers use incompatible technologies. Say what you want about AT&T, but at least they're using the same technology as the rest of the world, which comes in handy when travelling.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4Evilena, this thread rules. It's kind out blindsided, but with osko, the little bitch deserves it.
- dmtherob, on 08/03/2008, -0/+3I want an iPhone so bad, it is driving me crazy. But I won't own one, even if you gave it to me if it means signing the horrible contract with AT&T
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3-A quick temper will make a fool of you soon enough.
-Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.
Bruce Lee (1940 - 1973) - jcaffoe, on 08/02/2008, -1/+4I'm really excited to see the iphone on various carriers, hopefully it will actually happen.
I just switched over to ATT and picked up a 3G, and I really believe this is a step in the right direction for phones. When I took a trip to Tokyo I was amazed at the phones I saw there. For one, they all look identical, largely rectangular flip phones, but they are also used for EVERYTHING. Cameras, MP3 players, PDA's, games, internet, people can even use them as credit cards, paying the bill at select take out places with their phone. And I'm not talking about the premium phones, this is every cell phone you buy.
Every copycat I've seen is largely concerned with the touch screen and multi-touch, but we should be pushing towards a unified device. Apple largely got it right, and I feel like everyone should have that option. - inactive, on 08/03/2008, -1/+4Let me put it to you this way...
Its the weekend. Its a beautiful sunny summer afternoon. I bet you are inside right now, am I right? - ieee, on 08/03/2008, -1/+3I like to be doing things that involve movement when I am outside so I never saw much of a hook, personally, for mobile computing.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3I think the only thing that could make this thread any better at this point is to hear SOLGAARD's expert analysis.
http://digg.com/users/SOLGAARD/history/comments - inactive, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2So in retrospect, we early adopters are not so dumb after all are we?
- plainOldFool, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2@evilena- My bad, I thought that was a swipe at me and I was uber-tired from working on my car in the heat, so I was just a tad grumpy.
- Commodus, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2The source for "2012" was USA Today - I just checked. They're either contradicting themselves or 2010 is the REAL date.
- plainOldFool, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2Now I'm getting nostalgic for my old Nokia 5190. The battery wouldn't lock firm to the phone so the battery contacts would occasionally seperate. I'd be on hold and not even notice that my phone had shut off.
- Ymeg, on 08/02/2008, -3/+5I hate apple just as much as the next person, but insulting a company because its goal is to make money is a bit...
silly. - ricksite, on 08/02/2008, -1/+3I think it is funny how people are hating on AT&T as if other providers are much better. The mobile industry as a whole is pretty crappy. I don't think there is one provider that shines an order of magnitude brighter than the others.
- Jeffler, on 08/03/2008, -0/+2Boo hoo.
In Canada, we're locked to Rogers. No exclusivity contact needed - the only other GSM company is Fido, who is owned by...Rogers. - inactive, on 08/02/2008, -6/+8***** APPLE
***** iPhone
***** AT&T
and ***** STEVE "RIM" JOBS
Scum company all the way around. - jmazz777, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2Bull ***** - another year or so and Apple will strike some deal with AT&T; heres a few hundred mill, take a walk.
- inactive, on 08/02/2008, -1/+3I see what you did there, you failed!
- ieee, on 08/03/2008, -1/+3That is a good point. I've also found hand held devices to be handy while traveling. Lastly, you said it gets you outside so that is a good thing.
